INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Well since Scrappy is getting too tall for the net over the brooder, we decided to get imaginative. We moved them into a spare room and built a new brooder. Since it looks like a crow's nest on a boat, I call it the SS Quackn'poop.
The little itty bitties are in there now too.

Love your brooder, such a great idea!

Does anyone have any female ducks or ducklings they would want to part with? I was going to get another duckling, but I'm not sure I want to risk getting a drake. Scrappy may be a drake, and I would like a pair, or two females if Scrappy is a girl. I definitely need to have two ducks here though. Scrappy has chicken friends, but swims are lonely.

Getting the blocks square and level took me and DH a very very long time on our most recent coop. I'd almost pay to haave someone else do it if I ever have to build another medium or large coop.

DH is currently putting a net on our almost complete new run. However it is looking very loose. How quickly he forgets that snow will knock down a loose net. He just re-put up our other net less than 3 months back. I'm so hoping that the run gets completed soon. There is a gate and at least 1 shorter wall that won't be completely finished today. And I'm thinking that the ground level chicken wire will be on the to do list as well as the higher wall of cheap plastic bird netting to keep sparrows out.
Is that the net you told us about before? Could we see a photo of it on there...and the link to the net again?

Maybe this time I'll get it saved

Pretty chicks everyone! And spring is in the air with the new coop builds :D

I didn't quote any of the photos, but I noticed that some of the chicks in the photos have been sitting back on their hocks. Not sure if they were just resting or if they are walking that way. So I thought I'd just note to keep an eye on your chicks to see if they're walking on their hocks or on their feet. Or...if they are walking on feet a short distance then going down on the hocks. (This is different than resting!)

Walking on the hocks is usually a sign of a thiamin or riboflavin deficiency and chicks can usually be saved by adding some tiny chopped liver (raw) or a vitamin supplement into the water if this is caught in a timely manner.

Just a "heads up". :D

I think some of mine looked like that in the pictures. They were in shock in most of their pictures, big person scary camera lol. Mine aren't walking on their hocks or anything. Anways your post reminded me I wanted to say: I read that article on the home page- mostly about Mareks, but talks about a lot of other diseases and illnesses as well. It is chalked full of information. I would recommend everyone read it and bookmark it.

Well, I have some sad news:

Einstein, my lone EE hen, was killed today by either a stray cat or my brother's dog. She just turned a year old this week and started laying again a couple weeks ago.
After all that girl has been through...raccoons, flock illness, below freezing temps, etc. I just can't believe this.

This was her just a few days ago, when she was helping me clean my Jeep.

My DF called me as I was finishing up work and I cried all the way home.

I was going to start trying to incubate her eggs too.

Is anyone from Ellitsville/Bloomington and below (Southern Indiana) incubating at the moment? If Einstein laid an egg today before moving on to chicken heaven, it is most likely fertilized by her now lonely BCM boyfriend. I haven't tested out my incubator yet and if there's a chance to hatch, I would really love to try! I am going to be in the Bloomington area tomorrow, but I will drive anywhere within 2 hours of Dubois County. Thanks!

How long can an egg be left out, waiting to incubate before it would go bad?
amwchicken ~ Have you found anyone with an incubator to hatch poor deceased Einstein's egg? I would be happy to help transport them to someone who has eggs going in their incubator soon. Could anyone on our Indiana thread keep Einstein's memory alive by hatching her egg?
I could bring it to the Indy area if that helps. I have a daughter and a friend there I could always visit.
