INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Today has actually been a pretty great day. Haven't seen my chickens yet either and they are usually what makes my day better! In BYC related news, I got an email from nifty chicken today. They informed me that they were looking at the list of members with the most ovations and I was in the top 0.01%! Couldn't believe (still can't). Maybe I am just super happy about everything good that happened today, because yesterday kind if stunk lol. Anyways, big thanks to everyone who has given an ovation!

Me too!  :highfive:

Me 4!    Us Indiana BYCers are a very helpful bunch!

They must have a large top 0.01%  lol

Me 5 !  :highfive: :highfive:  :yiipchick

So, me 4!
WOW it MUST be our thread, Congrats everyone!!

Let's see here, so that makes me eight! It's because Indiana people are so smart and helpful.

Unless I did the math wrong that 0.01% it is a little over 2,500 members. We have over a quarter of a million members!

0.1% is actually the top 250 or so out of a quarter of a million members. :D And eight of 'em are right here!

On your missing layer, she may have went broody..fingers crossed she turns up :( .
EEs, mine have been very seasonal, and only lay a few months out of the year. BAs are fast layers, started at 19 weeks. GLWs, they took around 26. My BCM are about 8 months and just recently started laying. My lavender Orps lay a nice big egg, but took forever to start also. I have WL, BR, JG and RIR growing up now, so am right there with ya waiting!

As the chicks develop they create their own heat. It does change the temps. Unless its over 101 grit your teeth and don't touch.. the bator should level back out.
Its hard not to, but the less we touch the eggs an controls the better the hatch will go.
Thats adorable, every so often a bigger chick plays mom!

Ok so day 21 here and I've had several rockin for a few days now. First internal pip yesterday. With all the babies in the brooder right next to it I can't hear like I could in silence. .lol. noisy buggers! Hahaha. So power failure didn't kill them all anyway

Ideas Needed.

For a quick, 2 - 3 chicken, predator secure sleeping "house/box" that they can be locked into at night only. For temporary use. Needs to be movable. Cheap. Re-purposed.

Well took some pictures of the silkie flock. I out half a dozen or so younger birds in with them. The older ones are still picking on them, but they are still eating or drinking. THey just spend majority if the day in the coop while the older ones are out in the run. Hopefully they start accepting them. Of the 6 younger chicks, at this time I'm only seeing one cockerel! Let's see if I'm right lol.

The older silkies

Love your silkie pics! They look so happy scratching around.

Bargersville here! We raised a flock of Rhode Island Red/Plymouth Rocks last year but every last one of them turned out to be the meanest darned roosters and we got rid of them. We just ran across freshly orphaned Black Duck eggs (trust me, mama is gone) and we are incubating those. Seven little eggies, all viable after candling and seem to be around 8 days today. :)
Good luck with the eggs, black ducks are beautiful! :)

I moved the little's out into the new pallet palace! They love the room. I have a heat lamp set up for them and they have settled down for the night. And Thanks again Kab for cricket he is awesome and I can wait to hatch some of his chicks!
Pallet Palace! Love the name!

Been so busy that I've been missing out on what's been going on with the Indiana BYC thread.

Thanks so much to jchny2000 for getting me set up with some quail eggs for hatching. I'm eggcited for the hatch that is due in 4-6 days when I should have lots of little peepers running around.

My silkie/d'uccle mixed rooster named "Winter" that hatched at Christmas is continuing to feather out just beautifully and is turning into the most handsome roo I think I've ever seen - photos just aren't doing him justice:

We're working on renovating the chicken shed and my hubby has converted an old business display case into a great brooder. I'll try to get some photos to post of that. I love seeing photos of what other people are doing - it's a great way to get ideas.

Spring is finally-finally-finally here! I am so relieved!

Does anyone on this thread have worm farms? I am interested in getting an earthworm farm and a meal worm farm going this year and would appreciate any tips. Thanks!

This bird is amazing. I would have never guessed this is what a D'uccle/Silkie cross would produce. Looks like a phoenix to me. I have composting worms or red wiggler worms. During winter, they are inside but as soon as it stops freezing, they go outside. Any of the kitchen scraps the chickens don't particularly like go to the worms and if they get over populated, I give some away to friends with compost for gardens or to the chickens. Very fun hobby and not a lot of maintenance. I got my original stock delivered by the post office from someone on ebay.
@atrueb00 : the little chicken pen my wife got something like this, but 2 of them :
http://www.amazon.com/Precision-Pet...upplies_1?ie=UTF8&refRID=0J3DJXG011D1S6ZY6JM4
the ones we got have 30" high x 24" wide panels
Added to my Amazon wish list! This is perfect for the silkies. Thank you!

I like it. It's cute just cant see how it will be roomy enough for the amount of chickens you want in it... IMO.

My DH brought one home and said that was what he was going to do with it.....
