Hey everybody! I finally caught up on the thread. My girls have really been enjoying the weather and I have to.
Everybodys pics of chickens and goats are so cute. About a week ago we had a eagle and a owl flying and the eagle chased the owl a little bit. Last night we heard coyotes that seemed really close. Thankfully all animals are accounted for.
The Norwegian jaerhons (hope I spelled that right) are really pretty. Will you be selling any chicks that you hatch? If so, how much would you be selling them for.
About the blue insulation we have some strapped onto the side of my coop and they don't try to eat it.
Akers hatchery's website still says hatching starting in late February so wondering if they have started yet. All the pics are making me want some new chicks so badly. You guys need to stop posting them jk.
Sorry for this long post.

Hello! I've been a bit behind on things here, too - when I'm not at work, we've been busy outside trying to get some spring projects done. We have a lot of projects on the docket for this year.

My Jaerhon are doing well and I'm very happy that I got into the breed. The chicks are extremely flighty - major little freakazoids! But from everything I've read, they settle down nicely when they mature and are very friendly. I would love to help propagate the breed in Indiana, so will be selling fertile eggs and chicks to those who are interested. Let me check on what the going rates are and I'll let you know on pricing. My girls should start laying in late June.

Aww! Its bittersweet for me. I just keep telling myself he is visiting you guys. :) I miss him a lot. I know it is for the best, and he has an awesome home with you guys. Im glad he is happy and you guys are happy with him. :)

One of these things is not like the other ;)

One of my Jaerjon is about half the size of its peers. It looked like it was getting squished and pushed around a lot, so I put it in with the silkies, who are the same age, but much milder in behavior. It seems to be happier being in with them. :)

Here's how the Jaerjon are looking at about 1 1/2 months old:

Does anyone here have any expertise in sexing silkie chicks? There are two that I'm fairly certain are cockerels because their combs are noticeably more developed than the others. Besides that, I'm not sure what other attributes might give me some good clues?

I snapped a couple of pics of my display case-turned-brooder tonight - not the greatest quality because the sun was just about down (and excuse the general mess - still spring cleaning and rearranging!), but they'll give you the general idea:

I've got six juvenile quail in it right now, but I'll be moving them out, probably this weekend, to make it ready for about 50 quail chicks due to hatch at the beginning of this coming week:

A phoenix - that's what I thought, too, atrueb00 - his coloring is very flame-like - really incredible shades of yellow, orange and red against charcoal gray. I'm seriously thinking about hatching more out of the pair he came from. The sire is a blue splash silkie - "Dandy Randy" - he is the greatest little bird man! And the mama is a very brightly colored mille fleur d'uccle. I'm wondering what the pullets might look like out of them.

Comb development doesn't mean much at that age. With good quality silkies, you wont know for sure until they are around 4 months old. Earlier in lesser quality silkies. I can try to early sex them for you if you shoot me some pics. It would just be a best guess. There is also a silkie sexing thread on here that has many experienced silkie breeders on it. Im Happy to help if i can.

I've never heard of Jockamos (probably because we don't live nearby

), but whenever we go down to Indy for state fair or state rabbit convention in September we always make sure to stop by Yats for cajun. Love that place!! We read that Yats was opening a restaurant in South Bend, but haven't had a chance to check it out yet.
I have never heard of any of these places. Never had cajun food either. But it reminded my of a "tradition" (only has been done 2 years, but will go there every) that I have when I got to the central indiana poultry show. My first chicken I took there was named Milkieway and there was an ice cream place there with the same name (but spelled with a Y instead of ie). Milkieway has since died. So now I go there every time.

Something like this off craigslist?

ChickCrazed ~ Thanks for taking the time to find those dog houses and post the links! Housing like that is always handy for quarantining or as a rain shelter as Brad had suggested.
@atrueb00 : the little chicken pen my wife got something like this, but 2 of them :
http://www.amazon.com/Precision-Pet...upplies_1?ie=UTF8&refRID=0J3DJXG011D1S6ZY6JM4
the ones we got have 30" high x 24" wide panels
iamfivewire ~ That's a nice chicken pen, and I'd like to have one because it looks handy, but I want to mention another perhaps more versatile option.

atrueb00 ~ We bought some T-posts from RK for a couple of dollars each and a roll of chicken wire-- it comes in several heights. We've used them to make pens around areas with new grass-- or gardens --to keep the chickens OUT! We're currently using them for a large chicken pen for my five 3 month old chicks. They're sharing the coop with my six hens, but are in a blocked off section. In the morning, the hens are let out first and are given some seeds to distract them. Then I move a section of the fence over to the coop door so that when the chicks come out, they're guided to their free range pen area. Then I put the fence back together to contain them. The chicken tractor is in the middle of the pen, so they have shelter. My point is that with some (we have ten) inexpensive T-posts and a roll of chicken wire, it's easy to move, reconfigure, and use for various projects.
Speaking of my chicks, I think my hens have seen the writing on the wall about having additional flock members because the hens have been fighting amongst themselves. My EE, Roadrunner, used to be at the bottom of the pecking order and was very timid for the first year, but has increasingly gotten more determined about moving up. She's been so upset that she quit laying for a couple of weeks, but she laid one of her beautiful, large green-blue eggs today. When I was out in the yard with the hens today, Roadrunner surprisingly started pecking my BR, Tweedy, who has been one of the top hens. Then my little Chocolate Orp bantam Bonbon (my avatar) kept starting fights with her big best buddy Adeline, a Jubilee Orp, who is at least twice her size. I even looked over and saw Bonbon standing on Adeline's back attacking her! Then I noticed that Bonbon had some small bare spots on her head from Adeline pecking her away. My smallish, scrappy crazy RIR Nene is still the head hen. My SLW Lacey has become the least aggressive, but she had her "sister" BR Tweedy who watches her back.

While I was working in the yard, it occurred to me that although my three kids have flown the coop, I'm still breaking up arguments between siblings! Those hens need to settle their differences so I can enjoy my outdoor time.

Quote: Thats great news! I love to hear the cheeping peeping while they are in the egg, especially the turkey poults

and the goslings too, just melts your heart.

Quote: congrats to you too!

Ideas Needed.

For a quick, 2 - 3 chicken, predator secure sleeping "house/box" that they can be locked into at night only. For temporary use. Needs to be movable. Cheap. Re-purposed.

Doghouse was my thought too, if well made. Easy to ventilate and attach a pop door. Good luck!
