INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

I feel like they need to lift it on red tails. We have tons of them here, and no rabbits or squirrels left. between them, the fox and coyote. I haven't seen chipmunks in years now. I am all for wildlife protection, but they need to keep an eye on the prey animals too! The species will starve themselves out at this rate and the prey animals will be extinct too.

Our AC won't take cats period. Its pretty sad, we are "gifted" strays all the time. (Grrrrrr! Hey its a farm, they need our unwanted cat :smack ) It is a HUGE peeve of mine to find a kitten dumped out that has no chance of living here. I don't want and can't have house cats with moms health. I have them spayed and let them live here, in the barn. If they make it, then all is good. Many are even declawed and just have no chance. Right now, there are none left of what's been dumped. Just wrong!

Ugh that's awful. Mousers don't just happen. A pet house cat and a barn cat are completely different.

I have a pair of redtails and a coopers hawk that hang around the house. As far as I know they have never bothered the chickens. I did loose a cardinal and a couple doves from the feeder this winter. It's like my old biology prof said . They are just trying to make a living. I am glad they are doing it elsewhere..

I've got chicks hatching again! And its good luck too, first one just stuck it's head out of the shell, and it's a legbar female! 2 more legbars are zipping, and I can see lots of external pips.

The incubator is also full of loud peeping. Those chicks in the eggs are calling to each other. We have a blind lab that we adopted recently, and he just stands by the incubator trying to figure out where the squeaking is coming from. Our other dogs ignore it completely.

Very good point!
If I didn't say it yet, welcome to our thread! Great to see so many people joining in

I have sent an email to mypetchicken after my cracked/fixed eggs. I am hoping it showed my disappointment. It still is irking me how a company like that would send out such bad looking eggs. I wouldnt have been so upset if the mail had broke the eggs. This was just rude business!

The labs senses, like hearing are probably more acute.
Like in people when they lose sight or hearing, the other senses adjust to help compensate.

Congrats! You may have a nice flock built up very soon.
I know my hatches are much better now. I am very glad I got this cabinet, its flat awesome.

Waiting for the lil chubby to dry, its tumbling all over the hatching drawer! Need to add water so will pull it and the ducklings out then.
Will be getting a water reservoir, its a pain adding water during hatches, worries me!
I have my coolerbator torn down to add a window, so am still hatching in the cabinet.

Janet's post above gave me an idea. Maybe during poultry fest we could have some people bring their homemade incubators (if not in use) and we could do an educational session on the basics of building your own. Does that sound interesting? I know I would definitely want to learn. I want to build a hatcher that is more stable than the styrobator I use.

Good for you! I think its ridiculous they sent you cracked eggs. That's insane, if you are going to patch an egg, then don't sell it!
I know I won't be buying eggs from them for sure after seeing that..

Great idea! I will gladly bring mine. Its ugly but its awesome for hatching. I think i have 8 bucks invested for the water heater thermostat.
Everything else is repurposed. I am switching the fan, its too strong an air flow. Its a 120mm AC fan, am going to an 80mm PC fan instead.
Have an old power supply converted to plug computer parts into for testing. It already has an ac cord attached, just gotta find it now in my computer stuff
