Lol can I buy your leftovers? :p

I got some new books this week that i ordered off of amazon. Can't wait to get some free time to start reading!!!!!!!! Hope everyone and their chickies are enjoying this beautiful weather!!!
BackyardBitten ~ Great selection! As you may know, the Chicken Health book is co-written by Rob Ludlow, the BYC.com owner. Gail Damerow wrote "Storey's Guide to Raising Chickens" 3rd Edition (recommended by Leahs Mom and an Indiana thread favorite) and "The Chicken Encyclopedia," which I've recommended.

One of my daughters and her husband live near an apartment complex. I think the folks from the apartments move out and leave cats. their house is right at the end of the populated portion of the road and it is all farm field and larger acerage homes on the other side of them.

They began leaving water out for them during the winters. One of the young'uns kept coming to their deck window and communicating with her 2 indoor cats. They worked with him until he would come in the window to eat and spend a little time with them (without their cats present). They ended up taming him to join their other cats as a house cat after they took him to the vet for all the "stuff".

In our area you can purchase certificates to spay or neuter a stray cat to return back outside. They've done 2 of them and continue to leave water for them as well.

Leahs Mom ~ Good for them! Some people are so heartless about their so-called pets.
That's terrible about your accident! I was afraid you were going to say the the rooster attacked you when you were down. Hope you have a speedy recovery. Maybe you could rest on a hammock while DH takes care of the animals!

that stinks!! Hope you heal quickly! I've been struggling to keep up with taking care of things here! Morning sickness is pretty crappy when it's all day sickness!
brown cow ~ Congrats! Didn't know you were expecting. I had "morning sickness" that lasted all day, too. Reminds me of the fallacy that roosters just crow in the morning.
Flock update. Now I'm raising quail again. Johnny2000 sent me over 80 wonderful eggs. I highly recommend Dixie rainbows for meat birds so far. Mine are 4 weeks old Monday and twice as big as the buff orphingtons, partridge rocks, Easter eggers, and tetra tints that are the same age. Big but less messy and much heslthier than cronish crosses.
familytradition ~ Good to hear from you! A new member was just asking about meat birds (I only know about pet birds - lol), and I told one of our regular members, a college student pipdzipdndreadytogo (Kristen) about you because she loves genetics. Good luck with your quail!

I passed the test! I am officially an NPIP certified tester. The class was pretty fun. Thy had a poultry vet speaking and I loved heati her stories and talkin to her. She may even bring her class out to see my flock. There was also a guy who was quite funny. I enjoyed it
CCCCHHICKENS ~ CCCONNGGRRAATTUULLAATTIIOONNSSSSSSS!!!! What a great accomplishment and fun time.

hoosiercheetah ~ Way to go, DH! Can't wait to see photos!
yankeedoodling ~ LOVE that photo -- hilarious!

Ok i kind of have a dilema. So i just got a new digital thermometer for my incubators this week and i'm trying to calibrate/figure it out. Right now i have two different thermometers in my incubator that is currently running, one of the old fashion ones that have the "red dye" in it, and then my digital. The problem is, i'm not sure which one is right. I really want to get it figured out as I have some really nice hatching eggs coming in a few weeks. The old fashioned thermometer reads higher than my new digital thermometer. I did everything the paper that came with the digital said to do. Any thoughts? not quite sure what to do.

How many degrees is the split between the two? I know nothing about incubators so I don't know what the acceptable temp range. is, but my first thought is use both and split the difference. My second thought involves a barometer. Water boils at 212 F if the air pressure is 14.69 psi (29.92 inches of mercury). if you can determine your actual barometric pressure, you can use a boiling point chart to find out what the corrected bp of the day is... then boil some water and see what the thermometers say.
If you want to get a pretty close guess of the barometric, any weather website will tell you, but the pressure in your house may be slightly different, depending on how far from you theye are taking their readings. In many cases the data comes from the nearest airport. But not always.
Personally, I'd be. inclined to trust the digital over the analog. Thermistors are pretty precise. Just out of curiosity, what is the temp you're trying to maintain, and what's the acceptable range? What make and model is the digital thermometer?

Hey jchny2000 - they have arrived!!!!!! :weee 37 is the current count and a few more are pipping but not yet zipping. Two are yellow! I had all my birds outside today while I was cleaning cages and getting things ready for the quail chicks. It was the first time that Singer, my dominant Serama, met my "chicken king," Dandy Randy - a blue splash silkie - he was ready for some action! It was a good, productive day - and such beautiful weather! :yesss: I wish tomorrow's forecast wasn't for more rain. :(
are you sure that's a blue stash silkie? Usually splash looks like this. http://www.feathersite.com/Poultry/CGP/Silkies/SplashSilkiePr.JPEG He almost looks like he's got some cuckoo http://www.blueridgesilkies.com/silkies/cuckoo_silkie_cockerel.jpg

Hhhhhmmmmm - I think you are right. I bought Dandy from a 4-H family and just assumed they were correct in what they told me - never followed up with research. He was my first and only silkie for well over a year, and his disposition is what convinced me to choose that breed as one of my coop's lines. So when I ordered my Jaerhon in February, I also ordered eight partridge silkies (one didn't make it through shipment). I had a hard time choosing between partridge and cuckoo. What is interesting, is that the partridge silkie chicks I received have a kind of striped pattern that looks cuckoo-like and I'm wondering if they'll keep it as they continue to feather out. It's very cool! Even though I chose the partridge color of silkie to breed and keep, I couldn't get rid of Dandy - he is an awesome little birdman! I still have two mille fleur d'uccle hens from last spring and I hatched a chick from one of them at Christmas - Dandy was the daddy. It is turning into the most stunning rooster I have ever seen - phoenix-like coloring. I am going to try hatching a dozen or so chicks from that pair this year, just for the sheer fun of it - to see what other chicks might look like from that cross breed. I really want to see what the hens would look like.

He's really super pretty anyway. Any chance you might want some buff silkies lol? I just ended up with way too many.
