INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Speaking of Rangi, I'm a bit worried about her. She acts fine and all, but she looks like she's getting bullied a bit by her flockmates. Her head has been picked bald and the feathers on her back are looking tattered. I'm not sure if Po is responsible for any of it, but I've never seen Rangi let him get close enough to her, so I'm thinking he's not the problem. She's always been the bottom of the pecking order in her little group, anyway. I think it's just in her nature to be less assertive than the others. She came over to me this morning and told me all about her problems while I crouched by her and stroked her feathers. I felt so bad to see her in such a state! Poor baby.

I wish there was something I could do.
Is it possible to stake out and see if there are particular birds that are bothering her? I tried the crate for a couple and so far have been having good luck in returning them after changing thing up a bit.

Japanese Yew.

My baby cow was poisoned. He was dead the following day. I was just bawling like a baby over it.
Very sorry to hear this!!!!! Those Yew bushes are toxic to all livestock and they are the shrubs that MANY homes planted around in the 70's. Most people have them around their homes so this is a good reminder to us all.

I am just surprised that they ate more than a bite. I had hoped that the taste would deter them.

There are situations in which the DNR will remove protected species or allow you to get a permit to remove them if they are proving to be a continual threat to your livestock.  You can apply if the situation warrants it.

I'll look into it- I can't get a super good look when the hawks do fly over head but thanks for the idea!

I got to show off my ducks and ducklings today.  They all look to be the same size now and they travel around the run in a herd.  It is great fun to watch or even try to walk up to them.

I also had a great time meeting  LonelyPageTurne

Thanks to racin, jchny, and pginsber for help moving that shed, it went faster than I thought it would.

Help Please -- Today's Crisis:

I was outside and heard Bonbon making her Broody Screech sounds. I looked in the coop and my BR Tweedy was sitting in Bonbon's nesting box like Tweedy was planning to lay an egg there. Bonbon was furious and stood outside the box. I saw a broken hatching egg next to her. It was the Silkie one from Janet!!!

At first I thought Tweedy had broken all the eggs on purpose, but I think it just was a casualty of the ruckus when Tweedy took over the box. (There was an empty nesting box right next to Bonbon!). I grabbed Tweedy and made her go to the box in the garage that she usually prefers to lay in. Then I shut the coop door for the meantime until I figure out what to do. Should I move Bonbon and her eggs? If so, where? I don't mind having her inside, but I don't want to stress her out. So far she has been broody in that same box for almost a week without any problems from the other hens. They've all left her alone until today.

I'm sure everyone is outside is the gorgeous day!!! I'm heading out now.

I would make her a little spot in your house or garage. It won't stress her out too much

Is there a way you can section off her spot but still give her food and water. You might have to use a kitty litter scoop, I have heard that a broody makes a stinky mess once a day.
Whatever you decide to do, I would try to do it as gradual as possible during daylight hours or a even all of it after dark.

CCCHICKENS & Sally ~ Thank you!! I will figure out something to use so I can move Bonbon-- probably the good ol' dog kennel because I have the 1 opt and 3 silkie chicks in a sectioned off place in the coop. Or now that I think of it, I have the cage I bought for a quarantine that needs some minor modifications. Adeline has been going crazy to get in the coop and I let her in twice supervised, but had to grab her when she want to get in the same box with Bonbon. Adeline just talked and talked to Bonbon in a different voice than usual. Wish I knew what she was saying. All the hens have been out of sorts today because they all wanted to lay at the same time and were mad they couldn't use the coop. There've been more pecking order issues between them, too. Stressful, but beautiful day. Fortunately, the silkies and orp chicks are doing fine. I'm going to go work on Bonbon's new coop now. Hope everyone is enjoying the weather!
