INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

I don't have silkies, but I have a friend in Canada that has plenty of them and breeds them. Very cold temps and hers do okay. I do believe she keeps the temps in the silkie area above "0" F. (Their area is regularly in the negatives. They've still not gotten above freezing this year at night yet!)
Thank you!

Bonbon Delivers! 21 days

I worked in the backyard all afternoon with the chickens, and every couple of hours, I'd check on Bonbon. I had felt totally positive about the hatch since Bonbon appeared to be a serious broody. Although I knew that logically she might not hatch at exactly 21 days, by late afternoon I was starting to brace myself for the possibility that the hatch would fail since she's a new mom. I thought of all the posts I've read from members who've posted that their broodies were supposed to hatch, but nothing had happened yet, and they were worried. Those posts were always followed by thrilling news of their broodies' hatches. Around 6:00pm this evening my son stopped by, and I decided to check on Bonbon. I looked in and heard peeping and then saw a teeny tiny chicken foot sticking out from under Bonbon! Then the miniature chick stepped out a minute to see the world-- and test out her voice! Here's a video: Bonbon's first chick 6:00pm May 7, 2014
kaphyper gave me great advice, and coincidentally, her Silkie hen Suki is in the middle of hatching, too! kabhyper said not to look under Bonbon to see what's going on because I could shrink wrap any hatching chicks. The eggs came from jchny-- 3 bantam OEGB and 1 bantam Mille Fleur. Hope they all hatch!! Thank you!
Yay!!!! Congrats to you and Bonbon and all our IN BYC family!

Congrats!!  :clap  I got mine 2 weeks after yours, hope they are just as heavy in a couple of weeks! Some of them feel like they are over 5 pounds already. Can't believe how big they get in such a short amount of time.

The honeybees leave the hive any day it isn't raining and is over 50 degrees. They don't like to be out if it is very cloudy or windy either. They forage a 3 mile radius around the hive, so sometimes I will see them in the yard, but mostly they are flying in and out of the hive entrance and going towards other places. They forage for pollen (which serves as their source of protein) and nectar (which services as their starch/carbs). Around dusk, it is like a little highway of bees coming back to the hive all at once, they travel very high up though so unless you look up, you may not enough notice them traveling around.

I am so sorry to hear this. I hope she makes it. :fl
This is so stinkin cute! Bashful lil feller. :)

I can't wait to see pics of Bonbon with her little chicks! Such a little cuttie :)

All nerve of some people!! In my experience, everything she said about silkies was incorrect! All the neighborhood kids love to come over and help out with the silkies, they especially like to dig up worms and bring them over as treats. The birds are great around people of all ages because I've handled them since they were a week old. They are used to being around people, being picked up and hand fed. It was mighty cold in our neck of the woods this winter and my silkies aren't even a year old but made it through just fine! If I brought them inside they would start to pant cause their feathering is so warm-and we only keep the house at 72!

What the heck is wrong with people?? :he

Thanks I was just curious about that.

Awesome, congrats in the hatch!
Goodness, they are precious! Congrats on all the chicks.. Some of mine (lavender guinea) are from trey also! I am leaning chocolate PIED so he really blessed you with some beauties :love His guineas were one of my best hatches last year, and I had quite an assortment from him. Winter was hard on the late summer keets, so I wont hatch past july this year. When they are around 4 months, we can tell what sex they are. OH NO.. I am worrying daily, one is constantly overhead this last week. Is anyone missing? Looks like a great start!! We are scrounging wood for our breeding coop project too. I keep begging DH to get pallets, its a great way to repurpose. He wants to use new wood. Hawks are thick this year, and I have one nested at the back of my property in a cottonwood. Teeth clenched and watching close! Really stinks, I have 2 new squirrel families this year, and had a bunny move in.. something got. Her kits were all over the front yard and nearly starved. I knew they were not in good shape, 2 DH was able to just pick up. We have been able to save one of the 3 we found, the other 2 were too far gone :( and lost them by the next morning. The third is thriving on goats milk and lots of clover and dandelions. I am struggling on what to do with it, If I release it, its sure to be somethings dinner here.
Thanks! My dad gets me all my pallets. He gets them from the newspaper place, his work and he still has tons from when he used to win a pallet business, and sometimes on the side people pay him to take them away. So we are always in stock. If I could afford to use new wood I would! But I can't lol. I hang seen any hawks for a long time. Good luck with the baby bunny kudos for saving it!

Grabbed some quick pics of some of my favorite chicks growing out. Cuckoo silkies! Looks like I ended up with a pair.

Here's a pic of Crooked Bill. Seems to still be doing great, just very funny looking. If anyone wants this little guy let me know! Pet only!

Loving this cross, tolbunt polish/legbar mix.

And this one, a Marans/legbar mix

And finally the first chicks out from the current hatch, tolbunts, parti showgirl, and lavender orps for @PeacefulWalls !

Wow!! I LOVE the barred silkies and the Polish/Legbar cross!! Very neat birds!!! If crooked beak is a pullet I can give her a home as a pet. I know it is probably too soon to tell though and I already have too many roos!

Good morning! Congratulations on all the hatching going on. Fun to have peeping back in the house. We have chicks once again. Funny, how when you go buying tons of new chicks, one of the older girls goes broody. We got 25 meat birds (not in the house), 6 California White, 4 White Leghorn, 3 EE, 6 BR turkeys, 2 Blue Cochin and 1 black, 3 Cuckoo Marans. Gave the 7mo old BO broody 1 Blk Sexlink and 5 EE eggs. She 's doing great. Due to hatch May 21. Switched from 250 w red bulbs to 150 w black heat bulbs. LOVE them much better. Babies have much better sleep/wake cycles.

Welcome to everyone new! I actually caught completely up on posts. Had to read over 2000. Whew!!

@Leahs Mom , I have never had any chickens get caught by our coop door. It makes just enough noise when it turns on that they know something is happening and move away. Also, it doesnt go very fast so they would have plenty of time to move if they were standing in the door and it bumped them on its way down. And I do clear the poop and shavings out of the track every few days so that has never proven to be a problem either.

I have the Ador door. I had my JG hen get caught in the door once. I happened to be in the yard and heard this big squawk. I went over to the coop, and the door was closed, but there was a head sticking out of the base of the door. I freaked and thought it had cut off her head! But I went over and she was just pinned to the floor. I pulled the door up and she got up and stalked away, shreds of dignity intact. I think she was napping right in the doorway, and even though the door was closing slowly, never bothered to move until she couldn't.

I'm surprised it stayed down. My Ador won't close and reverses to open if anything is in the way - hence the frozen poop in the track issue this winter.
