INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

People are always lookig To get rid of roosters. Post location and what breed or breeds you would consider and I am sure someone could point you in the right direction.
I am looking for a rooster that can handle multi breeds as, not really looking got baby chicks at this time, just a rooster that is willing to act as a "father figure" to our broods....we have 9 Indian runner ducks, 3 turkey's, 5 Cornish X, 4 Barred Rock and the rest and Rhode Island reds

I have a rooster that does real well with that but I have 2-others so I have to keep them rotated. So I would let him go if you would want him. I can PM you some pics of him tomorrow. Problem is I live near Anderson so quite the distance between us. Just let me know.

They grow so fast don't they.  All of mine look as big as our adult ducks.  The weight is not quite there but soon I'll be getting lots of duck eggs.  I'm 75% sure your ducklings were hatched 2/12. I can't find the exact receipt right now.  The ducks were hard to get in this winter with the cold weather.  I'm very certain that your ducks were not in the 1/29 hatch group.  I'm thinking your trip was before the last group of 2/26.  But you thinking your trip was in March is causing me to think maybe a 25% chance of the 2/26 hatch date.

My Khaki ducklings from last year started to lay at 21 and 23 weeks.  But they were late summer hatches so they might have been delayed layers.  Most of the web has khakis laying at 20 weeks.

I think you are right it was the middle of Feb. So if Khakis start about 20wks we should start getting duck eggs by this time next month. Everyone will get a laugh out of this and think I'm totally off my rocker but: I had a dream a couple nights ago that I went out on coop cleaning day and opened the clean out\egg gathering door on the side of the coop and was bowled over and buried by tons of eggs (as if opening the door of an overstuffed closet). Freaked me out because although I had just cleaned the coop on Friday I had never thought to be looking for eggs. So Saturday morning I made it a point to go out and chk for eggs in there. I REALLY don't want that dream to come true... Very scarey for sure!lol
Anyway thanks for the info. Hope alls going well with the new little one.

Quote: Those are collectors. If an animal comes on my property and attacks or kills my birds/livestock its gonna get shot. Where we are, most people respect that we have livestock and contain their dogs... we do get abandoned animals here often. I call the pound if there isn't anything posted for a lost pet. Aggressive dogs I wont hesitate to shoot, have lost goats and birds too often to risk it. If I find the owner, they wont like me very much, I can be very hateful and will prosecute!

Here are a couple random pics from today.
One of the Wheaten Marans wondering why I'm bothering her during her turn in the nesting box!!

And this is my favorite EE hen, I call her Redtail. Her head is not usually this poofy but it is a little chiller today.

When should these girls start laying? They were hatched the second week of Feb!

26 weeks is the norm.. my EE bunny waited til the next spring to start.
Well I finally got some pictures. I have to apologize ahead of time because my chicks did not get the memo from Kab's or any body else's chicks who cooperate for pictures. Mine did not for even a minute.

These chicks came from Brad.

Russian Orloff (I think) BLRW and Partridge Wyandotte Buff Partridge Brahma

These two are unknown also from Brad

I hope I have these all labeled right
Isbar I ordered 5 of these and she sent 6

Breda I also ordered 5 of these and she sent 6

SFH I ordered 3 of these and she sent 5 Not a very good picture but I just love the face.

Coronation, Light and Silver Sussex Your not taking my picture Is she gone yet?

I ordered 3 each and she sent a total of 11. If I understood right the dark are the silver. The coronation and light can't be told apart until they feather out.

These are the chicks I just got this morning. I have no idea which ones are what because none of them are marked. But they are supposed to be Red & Silver Gray Dorking, Blue Orpington, Silver Penciled & Partridge Rocks, SC & RC RIR.

Lastly, the chicks that we hatched. The first group are the smallest ones.

Sorry for the pic overload

OH MY don't be sorry

Well my broody was successful on her first hatch! Looked like 2 hatched, but one I found dead. Another egg was pipped. So I brought the live chick inside due to it getting cold and not having the broodies separated from the rest of the flock and the pipped egg in the hatcher. I didn't want to loose the others, too.
I had huge broody problems with the geese and had a gosling trampled. took the remaining eggs this weekend. Too many ganders.. Agreed, not worth the risk.

So of the two CL I hatched, the boy that had the exposed navel passed just a little bit ago. I had another from one of my own eggs that passed yesterday. On the upside I was so pumped on Mothers Day to hatch my first very own NN and I now have 2 more!!! I love them! Sorry did I say that already! ! Lol!
I am so sorry on your losses. I really love the NN too, they are sweet birds.

I have 4 Marans eggs left to hatch that I took from my broodys and 1 has externally pipped. .then I'm done!

I've been working on hatching what seems like since June of 2013 Lol...of course on and off but geez! I have to say though that I did dry incubation this last time with weighing and that's the ticket. I was surprised that some still struggled to lose enough weight! Really blew my mind!
I have a lot better results with dry incubation too.

I'm so happy. A guy answered my CL ad and bought every poult I had. All 18 if them.
And I have more hatching now! 4 in the hatcher and more pipping.
Awesome! Still waiting for my adult BR to start laying! I took her poults about a week ago. Have seen the tom on her several times, but no eggs yet.
My BBW hen and my little BR jenny both started laying this week. My younger tom just hasn't figured it out yet

He is acting almost afraid of the BBW hen, but its the tom missing an eye. He has always been a bit fearful. She is squatting for anyone, everything... he just needs to figure out what to do.

Ok so an update on my babies.

I moved everyone around and Cleaned my entire garage. I've been changing their jars with new ones instead of refilling them and cleaning the red bases 3 or 4 times a day. The weak one is getting poly vi sol 4 drops a day. Their water has vitamins, electrolytes, probiotics and raw acv.

Everyone else is hale and healthy but the weak one hasn't changed much. Still droopy wings, no new feathers and it's sleeping a lot. It does eat and drink. I also noticed it had one very strange poop. Dark and round and hard. And Shiney. Any new ideas? I inspected closely and no mites, but they sound easy to miss. Here's photos of him.

With his buddy to show feather difference

Weird poop

Sometimes there are internal issues we can't see. The chick doesn't thrive. You are doing all you can

Quote: Moving a lot of mine out too, finally SPRING

I was woken up this morning at 5 am to thinking I heard something off..George our newest mom has her babies in our master bathroom vanity area. But I swore the sound was muffled! I got up and tracked down Bella our other pregnant cat who had given birth under our bed! She had 5 and after I moved them into their own box George decided she was going to take care of Bella and her babies. She obsessively was cleaning every one including Bella. My DH called her Super Mom! Hahaha!

I'm not sure which one was more wore out!
This is too precious. Please, consider spaying the moms soon, Its so hard to find forever homes.

Any advice on where a new hoosier can get can get good chicks to start a backyard flock? My new house is in Nashville, IN. Thanks!

What breed are you looking for.. personality?

I needed to add some water to my incubator, so I went ahead and candled my wheaten marans and Goldne comet eggs. Every egg looks to be fertile and growing. Its only been three days sense I set the clutch but they are doing something the top 1/4 of egg has a noticeable blob! Hopefully I am seeing growth.
Hatching vibes

Hi guys! I haven't been on here in forever! So.. I got my chicks back in April and 2 of them died (of course my favorite) and my frizzle didn't frizzle. So we got two chicks at tractor supply as replacements was told one was a leghorn but turned out to be a meat bird. We have it to my poultry club leader. Then we got a rhode island red and now all are doing fine, thank God! We built a chicken tractor and painted our coop everything is looking good now!
Sounds like its going well. glad to hear from you!

What's wrong with this chicks abdomen? It looks all swollen and its almost completely bare. It is one of the new chicks. I did not notice it yesterday. It is eating, drinking, and acting normal. Any help is appreciated.
Hmm watch close for a pasty butt. i dont see that its been picked on. maybe add vits/electrolytes but usually thats more common in a meat bird.
