INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Quick question: Will my hen give up on her two eggs if they aren't viable? Its possible they were in her nest a few days after the first egg as she was moving around a lot in the beginning. I just don't know if I should do something like touch the eggs to feel for movement or get them out of there so they don't break and get gross. She's good with the baby, so should I just trust her to know what she's doing sitting on the other two?

Ugh, I have 811 unread posts - don't think I'll every get caught up.  I don't post a lot but have been following the thread for several months now and have learned so much.  I love it that there are so many Hoosiers here and are so active, I don't feel so lonely in my chicken-keeping life.

So I thought I'd jump right in and share a little. I got my first chicks ever on March 1st.  Started with 6 but lost one after just a few days and then a couple weeks ago lost a second one to a fox, who snatched him through the wire on my chicken run.  That was very disappointing.  He was a beautiful barred rock and I thought my run was safe.  So now I  have 2 barred rock hens, 1 RIR hen and 1 RIR roo (I need to re-home him if anybody is interested)  I'm having so much fun watching them grow and play.  Every evening while I work around the yard they are out to free range and never fail to provide entertainment.  I'm sooooo looking forward to finding that first egg too!  Is it correct that they'll start laying around 16 weeks?

Anyhoo, that's what's going on here at "Fowl Territory" (our coop name since my hubby hated the idea of getting chickens) I hope everyone has a HAPPY FRIDAY!!

Hello!
How did the hatch go at school?

WEASELS...

Please weigh in.

-Do you have weasels in your area of the state? (What area are you in?)

-Have you ever had a weasel attack on your chickens?

We have major mink issues - very similar creature and impossible to catch.

I'm just curious, but have your chickens grown on him yet?

Okay, minks...
If you had a DOG KENNEL made from regular chain link, are the minks small enough to go through the chain links?

Absolutely, they can fit through any hole a mouse can - adults probably 1 1/2" hole or larger and the babies even smaller. My neighbor has seen two BABY mink down at his place that were too small to use a have a hart trap on. Luckily the mink at my place was after my barn birds and mice and has not yet bothered my chickens. I was not able to catch it when I tried (it is on my list to try again). My neighbor has the tumbler pigeons and has had losses the last two years, so they SEEM to prefer the smaller animals so far. That being said, I had a facebook friend post yesterday (lives in Ohio) that a mink has gotten a few of her birds this week. Someone recommended to her that she find an old fashioned glass coke bottle, put blood in the bottom (they are blood suckers), and bury it. The mink/weasel go down the hole and can't turn around or get the traction to get back out. Sounds like a good idea and an easy and smart trap to put all over the place but I haven't tried it.

Don't know if weasels or minks are in my area but we have not had an attack. We have lots of yard markers though. Boys just love that sort of thing.

I saw this today and thought of you. Maybe it could be converted into a rooster coop, more costly but more permanent than a tossed out dog house.
