INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

My older pullets and cockerels are loving the freedom of free ranging! They have spent all day from morning chores to evening chores free ranging outside the coop! They come and go into it at will through the people door. I've decided to leave the run attached for now. I love watching my flock doing what chickens do.

Here are a couple of my SLW cockerels, a Black Australorp pullet, a Jersey Giant pullet, and a White Leghorn pullet. By the way I know it seems like there are a million SLW cockerels for sale right now. But I would like to rehome a few of mine

Here is mine - I made a little box type cover to guard the upper door track from getting iced open (not sure it is necessary but may be something to consider if we have another winter like last winter). I do change out the batteries a few times a year, they are cheap though.

Thanks! Did you have any trouble with it this winter?

I had a minor issue with them pooping in the door track, the poop would freeze and then the door would sense something in the door and not close (a safety feature built in to prevent it closing on a chicken head). This was such a terrible winter I don't see it being as big a deal in a normal winter. I just kept a screw driver handy and made sure to chisel out the track every few days if I saw it building up. Now that I have the plastic over my pop door I will be curious to see if it prevents them hanging out in the door, pooping in the track. I think a couple others on here mentioned the same issue this winter. I have only ever had one chicken get closed out, the light sensors let it get dark enough that my old ladies are well tucked in by the time it closes. It was a young cockerel that got locked out once and it never happened again (I did hear him out there and put him in). There is a "last call" feature but I have never used it. It is a good product and I will be getting another as soon as my animal medical emergencies stop sucker punching my bank account.

Gregor is still the same, but he had slouched down so he couldn't reach his food/water today. He was a bit lethargic when I got home but started eating/drinking as soon as I propped him back up. I gave him a bath and built a sling for his kennel to get him off his poor legs. I can't tell if he likes it or not, it has leg holes so his legs poke through the bottom. He was eating in it well, but I went out after about 30 minutes and he had himself turned around away from the food/water. I turned him back around and went out a bit later and he had himself backwards again. I would think if he can move himself the wrong way he should be able to turn around gain, but I am a worrier and I am stressing about dehydration. Maybe he is enjoying being able to move himself now that some of his weight is supported, even if it is just that little bit. I JUST WANT SOME IMPROVEMENT!!!!! I did get the Poly-vi-sol in him. Here is hoping that will do the trick.
