INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Good deal! I work in Marion as well. We have had our RR's for 2 years and our others are about 5 months old. We love them like members of our family. My wife was terrified of chickens and now she loves them to death. We had  a problem with the older ones eating their eggs but we fixed that with better protein in their feed and a larger coop. We build a new coop from scratch from a design I had in my head ever since we got our first set of girls. We had 4 originally but one got sick and we had to nurse her for almost a year before we had to let her go to the big chicken coop in the sky. Now with the new ones we will have 7.....I hope you are enjoying yours as much as we do.........

Ohh I'd love to see the coop you built! Yes I really do enjoy mine, all 150-200 of them lol. I went over to my parents for dinner tonight and mom asked me how many chickens I have now. Is it sad that I honestly don't have an exact number? I think it's around 160, but numbers change so much anymore lol. Have more bantam modern games hatching as I type! But I love all the different breeds and the personality of each breed.

Minmin- beautiful birds, but I must say I'm partial to those silkies! Lol

The littles got to go out with momma to the big bird run today. :)

Brad- Diamond layed a grand total of 9 eggs before she went broody. She's sitting on 1 egg now. I'm thinking its bn 6 days. Earl is extremely mean to her when he sees I've taken her off the nest for food, water and ...uh...relief. When she gets back in the coop he literally jumps her and pecks at her! Is that normal? BTW I'm rather partial to the silkies too. That's why I NEED more lol.

I've got about half of the thistles pulled out of the strawberries now. Very disappointed nobody here wanted any of them

! Lots of strawberry blossoms & saw a number of green berries the other day. Yesterday I saw 2 that were red with just a bit of white on them. Had to pick them & they were so yummy! The kids wanted a bite & I told them no way -- only if they help finish pulling thistles! The ground has been too dry to pull the last few days, but after today's rain comes through I should be able to finish. Can't wait for a full crop!

It's really too bad chickens don't eat thistles. I'd never have to buy feed again.

No dead or one-eyed RIRs as of this morning. The new girls seem to be integrating pretty well. They definitely know their place. If Penny or either of the Orps walk toward them, they get out of the way. They don't seem to want to pick on any of the others. So it looks like we should be alright.

I'm glad I have fourteen miles of roost, so no one has to fight over it. I also put in another feeder, so hopefully they won't feel like they have to fight over that, either.

I hope the rain slacks off today so they're not sitting on each other all day. I'm glad the coop is gianormous.

Very cute babies. They have such big fluffy .... I don't know, what are they? Butts? Pantaloons? Whatever that is, it looks great on them.

Beyond the fluffy cuteness, your run setup was what I was looking at in particular.

Tell me about the board that is embedded at the base of your fence. I can't tell if it's 1xsomething whitewood or 2xsomething standard dimensional lumber. How did you install that? Is it on the outside of the fence? Is the hardware cloth buried with it? How long have you had it? Would you do anything differently next time?

I'm curious because a re-vamp of my chicken run is one of my summer projects this year. I'm collecting bits of information and ideas.
