INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Hi all! How is everyone? I have got to get on here more often.

Had 3 more chicks hatch. 2 are blue copper maran mixed with either a cuckoo maran or a. Gold laced Wyandotte roo. One definitely is blue. The third one came up missing the first day they hatched. Any idea what might have happened? They were in a box so it couldn't have fell out.

Also anyone have a light brahma rooster available?

I a almost kidnapped that beauty last night! Lol. Barb needed a "babysitter" while she n her SO had some much needed personal time, (I was staying at th same campground, 5 spaces down from them) I wasn't going anywhere so sure...why not. I took your baby out for a few minutes and cuddled with her, she was so sweet! BTW, I have the buff laced polish Racin was also rehoming, they are the sweetest calmest birds! When bedtime came, and I was very sore and in pain so it came early, I tried to hide her in her carrier in my car, but darn it Barb found her! Lol. I put all th birds in my car for the night for protection against predators, Barb n I prearranged for her t just take her out when they got back, lol, I should hav locked th doors...hehehe. If u ever want t rehome her I get first dibs...please!

Well I'm glad I had Barb there ;P

Same goes for you and the other hen, please.
If I incubate any of her eggs when she lays them and you want any chicks from her, let me know!
Thanks for babysitting and keeping her safe though. She's a doll.

How are people's corn crops this year?
Ours got blown over during an intense thunderstorm, but we stood it back up best we could.
Now, most of the stalks look good, but I expected to see tassels and ears with silk by now.
I have very, very tall corn, but only one teeny tiny ear on one plant.

Mine blew over from one storm, but came right back! I do have ears coming in, we have 7 rows going.
I got the bi color sweet corn at RK, really pleased with it so far.

I'm thinking you mean the little chicks. Once the chicks are large enough for outside, they are put in a pen outside, no free ranging till older. The cats and our new kitten can not get into the chick pens without tearing through at least one layer of chicken wire. Once the chicks are about the size of a softball or a bit larger the cats don't want to mess with them with the exception of meaties, the cats never gave up on getting those. There is a mutual fear right now between the cats and the free rangers. If I toss out scraps everyone runs for the treat but the chickens back up from the cat and the cat runs from the roosters and slowly backs up from the pullets. Chicks don't free range here until they are larger and really much closer to full size. And once I have full size chickens out free ranging then any younger chickens that are allowed to free range just have to be that much older. So the first group I started free ranging this year included 14 week olds but now I am only adding 18 week or older chickens to the free rangers.

Editing to add that I know the cats would eat a day old chick or even a 2 week old chick. It can come in handy when some of the hatchery chicks don't survive the postal service. Also the cats like to chase ducklings more than the chicks.
My barn cat Sassy will not touch my birds, even the chicks and ducklings.
There have been strays dumped here I have removed for going after my adult birds tho!

I finally found my dream truck. And now that I found it, it has been sold. Go figure, that is just my luck.

We are already planning for next year!!!!! Going to aim for pre-fair in hopes for more of us to get together!!!

Awe....sorry so many of u aren't going t b here today! We'll have a blast I'm sure. Our bellies and wish lists (and some of us our cars) will be full after a day meeting great people! I'm glad I made the trip! This park is really nice I've met the most amazing people here! Five spaces down from me there's a wonderful couple who have somewhere around 100 chickens! We talked yesterday evening for an hour or so. She knows Brad, and a few others on here...her name is Barb S. Lol. Looking forward t this afternoon! It's a little wet here but not going t let a little shower spoil my day...I'll just bring my soap and a towel! (Oh my...lol...that would give people something t talk about!!!) hehehe. Have a great day and travel safe peeps! : D

Sounds like it was a great time!

On today's list of simple pleasures: letting the chickens out into the run this morning and hearing Fred, our Golden Polish cockerel, crowing good morning. I think he's enjoying being the only male in our flock now. He spent the whole day crowing off and on and he's becoming quite protective of the hens. We live out in the country so no one is going to be too upset to hear crowing. It makes me smile every time I hear him. :)
It really makes me happy listening to all my boys! And of course the gobbles from the toms too
