INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Nests are fun. I've got mine dark and deep enough that the girls will use them, but one is almost impossible to reach into far enough to get the eggs. The magic middle ground is elusive.

In other news, I have to sit here and watch people take a quiz for the next hour, and I'm bored to tears. I left all my stuff to do down the hall and I can't go get it. Someone give me something to research online.

Here is a piggy update! I'm going to be keeping the light red one in the front. All of them are doing great.

How about "what is the meaning of life"

I have room for a few more hens, or turkeys if anyone out there needs to lighten their load!

@Leahs Mom The PI is back over here. I think this time the goats were eating some of the plants where ever they are and later when I was pushing the goats into the shed for the night it got on my arms and somehow a bit on my face. I've asked around and I can't use jewel weed or take predi.... for a bit longer as they tend to dry up milk glands as well as mucas glands. Any other recommendations? I think I saw you post about applying alcohol in another thread.
The thing I've had the most luck with for healing is peppermint essential oil. I get a q-tip and dip it into the oil and apply w/the q-tip. Then turn it over and dip with the other end. Use a new q-tip each time so as not to contaminate the bottle. Or you could use cotton balls but then you have to get a new one each time you need more of the oil on it. Put it on whenever it is itching.

Of course washing well with either Fels Naptha or Dawn first.

. All have been walking in hawks a little, but my vitamins and electrolytes are in the trunk of my dads car and I was going to get them tomorrow. Now I wish I would have got them earlier even though I don't think that is why they died I still feel terrible about it.

When they are walking on hocks it is likely thiamin deficiency. Could also be niacin. Are you feeding medicated chick starter? It contains a thiamin blocker which can be deadly for some chicks. As soon as you see them on the hocks, vitamins or tiny chopped liver needs to be fed immediately. Brewers yeast can also suffice if that's all you have around.

Since I'm behind I'm not sure if your remaining chick is still okay... if so... remove any medicated feed ASAP and begin with vitamins right away to prevent.

SUPER MOON EFFECTS?

You guys know how weird I am-- I told you about one evening when I was in the coop observing my hens' nightly bedtime quarrels, and I happened to be humming. I noticed that they responded with interest (off-key) and when I started blinking my eyes, they began closing their eyes like they were following my lead. Since then, I've been softly singing "Hush Little Baby" (Mockingbird) lullaby when they get in the coop. Each night, they get in their places and eagerly look at me waiting for their cue. Eliza, my English Splash Orp is the funniest because she has huge dark eyes and she scoots over closer to my Jubilee Orp, Adeline, to get a better look at me as though I'm the conductor. Then Adeline pecks Eliza for crowding her against the wall. I realize that singing to my chickens is not "normal," but it has greatly reduced their squabbling time. My chickens have always reminded me of Kindergarteners. Here they are after I started singing . . . they're probably thinking, "If we pretend we're asleep, she'll stop that horrible singing!"
Strangely I sing too, but depending on the tone, some of them will shake their heads and are in distress! I've heard of other's birds shaking their heads like the tone hurts their ears too!

Another thing I've started is I've started to wash my hands after having any contact with any of the animals before touching my face or anything else. Since I know the chickens run through the PI I even wash my hands after gathering eggs.

I've also been wearing long sleeves and pants to bed at night so I'm not risking getting any PI oil on the bed sheets. While it was bad, I'd change the pillow cases every day too since I had it on my face.

And...I wouldn't put EO on the face.
