INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

So, the little things poking out of the back of the head are the streamers. That's how you can tell it's a boy? When do they start getting these? Man now I need to go check some of mine I'm not sure about.

Also I have a question for the silkie people!!! Can you breed out a straight comb? I have a splash silky with a straight comb, if I breed her to a walnut comb male what are the chances that I will get walnut combs, instead of straight. I'm very new to this stuff so any info will help a lot. Thanks

Oh by the way! I also love this color of silky!(partirdge) I am trying to get more color in my silky pen. I love the variety.
Usually little boy silkies will have swept back crests starting as littles. The girls stand straight up. Once in awhile you will get a large vaulted skull on a boy. That tends to make the crest a bit fluffier and girlier, and you end up with what I have with the little blue partridge. Now that being said a good quality silkie should be hard to sex. You want the girls and boys to have noce round crests, so that's what I will be using him for in breedings. When you have a large crest on a boy, and can't tell sex, usually around 3 months you will start seeing the pins for streamers coming in on the back of the head. Also the hackles will get shinier, and little pins for saddle feathers will start emerging on the lower back, just like in regular feathered breeds. I have noticed my boys tend to grow faster than my girls and have a raspier 'voice'. I personally would not breed a straight combed bird. I have never had one hatch from my flock, but it is too risky that it would come out n future generations since it is recessive. The only thing I will breed is if the bird is really nice everywhere, but is say missing the fifth toe on one foot or has not super tight wings or a fault that can be bred out, then I will go ahead and use them. I try not to breed birds with faults if it can be helped.

If you have other questions don't hesitate to ask. :) We all start somewhere.

Also if anyone is interested I have a couple of really nice silkie boys I need to rehome. It's not urgent, just not using them for breeding, but they could be used. One is a bit of a turd, but makes beautiful chicks and they havent inherited his bad mood. One is blue one is black. Both are correct aside of a bit of silver hackle leakage which is just indicative that they are silver based, which is desirable, and the blue is missing a 5 toe, but hasn't passed it on to his kids. They all have the correct number of toes.Very fluffy, from show lines.

Hello Indiana people, Im in Northern In...Goshen/Elkahrt area.

Im looking for a couple birds heading into fall/winter.

Im looking for a couple EE/ameracanas or Olive eggers. I have 3 that I have had for 1 year but I dont know their actual age. They have stopped laying since Late July. I dont know why...still healthy and perhaps going through a little molt but dont look bad at all. Strange.

I would also like some ISBAR as well. Forgot to mention. - edit

Anyway, Im looking for some color in my egg basket and if you have any EE that are around or less than a year, I would be interested.
thanks
-Matt

Does anyone have a custom feed recipe that they like? I am switching to a feed mill in Sheridan (I may also go to Lebanon this week to see what they offer) and they will custom mix to 18% protein but require 500 lbs to do it (10 bags). I am unsure of storing that much (mice in my garage). I would save around $30 by doing this and can't decide if it is worth it. I wanted to see if anyone else had a custom mix they so I could price a couple of options. I want something that could be fed to all ages (like a flock raiser).

I could have some Isbar hatching eggs in a couple of weeks. They lay a green speckled egg. PM me if you want additional details.

I'd be interested in a recipe too!

@ChickCrazed
What mill is it in Sheridan?

Defiantly check out Timmons in Lebanon. Their minimum order to mix is 250lbs. Either way get yourself a couple of these for feed storage!

I keep my cattle feed in these in the barn and have only had mice in them when I've accidentally left the lid off :) One will hold 300 lbs of cattle feed, I could probably get more chicken feed in one if it's ground or crumbles.

Wallace feed in Sheridan. They are only open business hours (which is why I haven't used them in the past) but said I can phone in orders and pick them up on the dock after work. I am going to try to get over to Timmons on Saturday to see what they have, it is just further away and not quite as convenient (yes, my address is Lebanon but I am 20 minutes from Lebanon and 5 minutes from Sheridan LOL). If Timmons is priced right and I can buy 250 lbs at a time it is worth the trek.

10 bags would last me 3 months or so and it would be nice not to have to worry about buying and unloading feed in winter, but my garage is already small enough and I have to get a tractor in there this winter! I am worried about space for storage!

Lol the fewer trips to get feed the better! :)

I'd like to know who determined addresses. I have friends near you at 421 and 47 which you would think would be Sheridan but it's a Whitestown address! I think he uses Wallace and Timmons for feed :)

Hilarious! I'm at 421 and 47 also! I bet your friends are east of 421 and I'm west of 421. Whitestown doesn't make sense at all! Wallace will do free delivery for 10 bags too!!!
