INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Haha. I love the odd ones! Which "pullet"? That's awfully late for it to mature into a roo! And nope, haven't been to any swaps. I plan to go to the Lebanon show and hopefully the NE swap that Ccccccccchickens is putting on. I'll look for ya.

Ok now whose a knuckle head??? When I was outside doing chores today, I heard/ saw her stretch n flap her wings...just as Roody crowed...uh oh! I saw that at a distance th other day n thought it was her...my bad! Sorry. It was Crystal (the "two faced" pullet) she's still not layed so when I saw that...jumped t conclusions. She is still soooo small! Doesn't seem t b growing at all just getting plump. She should b laying soon right?

Okay, y'all, 9 1/2 years into chickening and I've just gotten my first 'lash egg'. :sick At least I think that's what it was. It was so gross! Picture below. I hid it because it seriously grosses me out.

It's a crappy cell phone picture, but... :sick It's some sort of fleshy bit left in one of the nests. I don't have a size comparison, but those are regular flake pine shavings if that helps?

I'm not sure who it 'belongs to'... Yick. :sick But everyone is acting fine, so I guess it's just one of those things. :hu

In other news (and to get that nasty picture out of the big slot under Recent Images), look! Twins! :love

And... Oh, gosh, they are so hard to tell apart! But I think Kit-kit is on the left and Elly is on the right. :)

Edit: Oops, forgot. They are Silver Gray Dorkings. ;)

I had a couple birds that were "twins" so I put a band on one. I could tell the difference if I observed closely, but I figured that if I had someone else taking care of the birds I could just say, "The black one with the yellow band on it's leg" and it would make it much easier to communicate which bird I was talking about.

I can tell them apart in person, but in pictures, it gets tricky... But good point about birdsitters! Fortunately, the only person I can really rely on taking care of them when I can't is my mom, and she can tell Kit and Elly apart as well. Elly has side sprigs on her comb and Kit doesn't, and that's pretty readily apparent when you're looking at them in person. :)

They kinda look like chickens going at normal speed instead of guineas in slow motion LOL :)

For you guinea folks...thought you might enjoy this. I sure paints a comical picture :D

This really is true and so funny! I have an opaline guinea in with our silkies and 1 MF and she runs the coop. If anyone has a squabble, she breaks it up. If anyone strays to far, she gets them to come back to the group. But she still can't find her way inside the coop all the time and has to be picked up and put inside for the night.

Thought I'd post this here too as some may be interested. (I also posted in the Natural Chicken Keeping thread.)

Some musings on GM/Glyphosate
You know I have posted in the past that I'm wondering if glyphosate (common name: roundup) may be a bigger issue (or at least as big) as the GM grains. In fact, I've wondered if that is the main issue rather than the GM but I'm just "wondering" based on the research I've read and common-sense deduction.

When a plant is GM, it is engineered to be able to withstand a higher level of glyphosate and other herbicides so that it can survive while the weeds are not able to withstand it. (Of course we are starting to have roundup resistant super weeds but that's a different subject.) The glyphosate is taken INTO the plant...it doesn't just reside "ON" the plant. Glyphosate has been proven to cause reproductive problems in humans and animals among other things (such as leaky gut, for example).

Anyhow...interesting article regarding glyphosate and "celiac" or "gluten sensitivity" that I thought I'd share for anyone that may be interested.

"Hi-lights" of the article:

I guess now that real life has started again, I will only be able to drop by occasionally, sigh.

My parents came to visit. My dad so does not get the whole chicken thing. He kept asking "why chickens?" (actually he has been asking that for months - the first time was with a look of utter disgust). I was good and did not retort with asking him why he enjoys hobbies he and my mom are actively involved with. At least my hobby provide food!

My mom get's it. Her fondest memories are summers on the family farm with her grandparents. Actually those are my fondest memories too! And the farm is still in the family.

The thing my mom found the funniest was how, as soon as anyone goes outside, they would all run over and beg for treats. She kept saying "they are as bad as dogs begging for treats!". She'd lead the around the yard pied piper style just for kicks.

Okay, time to go to bed before I fall asleep at the computer!
