Woohoo! Congrats!!

Went to RK tonight and got to save 10% on chicken food and a new shovel.

Also there are 2 rabbit hutch styled chicken coops for sale in Bargersville. The sign said $50. They were on the North side of 144 around the 4300-4700 area. I think it was $50 for both of them. They would make great brooders or isolation pens. I thought about getting them but our car was full and I'm sure they need a good cleaning to be bio-safe.

Still I know many on here are interested in starting with rabbits or might be looking for a brooder pen.

Aw, that's got to be tough. :hugs They went to a good home, at least.
Well, I should start by saying I have never had a Cochin hen before. All of my experience was with Po, my bantam Cochin rooster.

I decided last year that I wanted to try a rooster in my flock again. It had been about 5 years since I had a rooster in my main flock, but I free-range and like to know there's someone out there keeping an eye on the girl. I wanted a calm rooster that could be trusted around my young niece and nephew. I also wanted a bantam because I have bantam hens. I had heard good things about Cochin roosters, so decided to go with one of them.

I liked that he was super gentle and calm. He would get stirred if he felt cornered, but never acted out against humans, never showed a bit of human aggression at all. He was also very good with the girls, only went through a short hormonal phase unlike most of the other roosters I've owned. That's what I like in a rooster. I ended up losing him because I wanted a few of the hens to regrow some feathers he was treading off (he had 30-35 hens, but only a few of them would let him mount them, so they were getting worn out) and, unfortunately, one night I forgot to close him in his pen. :/

Po never had problems with his feathers. His pen got muddy when he was separated for a short while, but once I moved him out of the mud, he cleaned up very well on his own and didn't have any tattered or caked feathers as a result. No one pecked his feet feathers, no problems with that. He was always nice and round and fluffy. :)

:love I love the youngest! What a cutie!

Do you think maybe she gave up on the eggs because she could sense they weren't developing, or did you candle to check? Some girls just aren't meant to be mamas. It's a good idea to get an incubator just in case--as long as you're ready to take care of the babies if that happens! ;)

 I think I may have misspoken, y'all -- I meant if I were going to get a rooster, I'd want a bantam, not that I'm actively looking for a rooster. :) At the moment, my quarantine space is reserved for ducks if I find any at the Lebanon show. I may take one or two of ya up next spring, though! It all depends on how the winter goes and if I have any extra space by then.

Lol. I knew what you were saying, I figured I'd just try to peer pressure you into it lol.

I love the cochins both LF and bantam. Will always have a cochin. I am also loving the brahmas. Maybe it's just the asiatic breeds that are awesome

Oh, I see how it is!

Anyone know where to get a simple, cheap window for a coop that can be opened for extra ventilation? Apparently, the kind of window we put in the coop addition is no longer being made, so we may have to find another kind to use on the duck coop. Lowe's had these barn pane windows, but they don't open. They also had double-hung windows, but DANG $$$ they are much more expensive than the kind we used last time! I'm afraid no matter what kind of window we use we're going to have to remove the studs on the one wall and rearrange them to make it fit. :/

I finished repainting the walked-on wall, by the way. It was somewhat rainy, so I ended up sitting the wall up on the covered front porch and painting it upright--no more footprints! Mom and I kind of agree about the footprints--this is a duck coop, it would have to be duck prints, not chicken prints! ;) We couldn't get too much more done today, but mom started framing in the door. I'll get some pictures once these walls have been attached and are upright!

If you have Habitat for Humanity Restore in your area you can sometimes get a good price on all kinds of strange sizes. BUT BUYER BEWARE. Some of the Restores price their items very high and you can often get new ones for the same price or better.

I'd also encourage you to check craigslist. Sometimes folks are re-doing their houses and have the old windows for sale.

Thanks, both of you! :) We actually stopped by the ReStore on the way home today, but they had closed just as we got there! :barnie I just quickly skimmed through the Fort Wayne Craigslist and there are a lot of windows on there!! I'll take a closer look tomorrow. (I also looked in the farm animal section. Big mistake. Must... resist... )

Never thought to look at Menards! :) We'll have to check them out next time we're in town!
