I can go through the same fella I did last season, and get eggs in march. He has a big variety, very nice line of jumbos. He has a big facebook group also. I am worried how they will do overwinter, and honestly cutting out some of my work lol. I had to keep them in the garage last year, what a pain. Since mine are all a year or younger, its way past time to cycle. this new batch goes in 3 weeks and I'll be done.
If anyone is interested in Turkeys, some of us are trying to put together an order from Porters. We are two birds short of the minimum necessary to order. He has fantastic turkeys. If you've never owned some, you should try it. I've found they have such interesting personalities and are much more inquisitive than my chickens.

Plus, then you get to have this in your yard:

If you are interested, let me or @SallyinIndiana know.
I was very impressed with Porters birds. My 3 bourbons this year were hardly socialized, and they are just sweethearts! Its worth it to me to pay a few dollars extra and raise a good heritage line.I'll be adding holland whites next year with you guys! If anyone is considering turkeys, you can't go wrong with this breeder.

Hey guys! Can any of you lend some insight on adjusting a 5 month old kitten to the flock? We have mice really bad and got a barn kitty yesterday. He is using the little coop in our barn as a healing/ adjustment area. I let him out to explore a bit today. The chickens are really unsure of what he is. I want this to work out since he is such a nice mellow cat. Any advice would be great. Thanks! I dont want him killing my chickens.

He really vicious.

I am a total pushover for smokey grey cats! Adorable! Kitty condo, see don't touch should do it. He will grow used to the movement, and temptation will subside. He needs to meet adult birds first for sure, and go from there. Raccoon normally will ignore a cat, skunks too.

Going to Dinky's tonight and taking several of my birds. All my easter eggers, my polish crosses, my welsummers, Old english game bantam roos, and my silver seabright roo. I have decided to try to stay to a few less breeds. I'm staying with my silkies, cochins, barred rocks,RIR, white legs horns, and my lovely silver laced wyandotts.
It was really a tough decision, but I really needed to down size some before winter. We have close to 100 birds and several roosters that are not getting along anymore so I figured now is the time.
Maybe I'll see some of you there.
I hear ya, I am still weeding out breeds. Rehoming is going well, trying to place my older birds with families/kids thats just starting out.

Hey everyone. I'm looking for a couple porcelain duccles and welsummers. I have to rebuild my flock after a coyote incident. I'm located in north central indiana. If anyone knows where to get them please let me know.
Thanks
Oh, and It is a borderline sin to be happy about snow this early in the year.

if I havent said it already!
Totally agree, not ready to be cold yet!

It is officially cold. My chickens and goats are fluffed up. I have to hurry up and finish the chickens 17'x9' coop/enclosure in my goat house. They need more coop space. I plan on seperating the LF layers and my main Rooster and leaving them in the current coop. The rest will go to the new section in the goat house. The goats still have most of their house, I gave 1/4 of the space to the chickens. I hope to finish this up today since it is getting cold quickly.

Brrr, it was cold up here, too! And, I didn't have a jacket to wear out to do my chores because the darned cats used it as a litter box! Anyone else up north going to the Kendallville Apple Festival today? It's not really chicken-related, but I'll probably be wearing my Indiana BYCer shirt there this afternoon, so if anyone sees me feel free to say hi! :D Can't wait for apple dumplings and fritters and hot chocolate and fudge! :drool

Brrrr!! Its wicked cold out there this morning! Didnt get the plastic up around the runs so the girls are feeling it too. I just went out and cleaned all 6 coops and put extra pine chips in the runs so hopefully they are doing OK. Fresh bedding, food, water, meal worms, scratch grains and Boss for all of my babies. Spoiled birds!!! Lol
