RIP Nene

“Nene’s piano arrived!”
My daughter, Lauren, is studying animal behavior at IU. She sent information to me stating that chickens can be taught to play the piano. My RIR Nene is extra smart (and extra motivated by food!), so I thought she’d be a perfect pianist. As it turned out, she was accompanied by other talented flock members.

When the timing is right for you, should you want another RIR, I'll donate a heritage RIR to you. I should have chicks this spring if not late winter. It takes about 4-6 weeks for me to make sure they are not roos. And in a month or so I should have a started hen that I will cut from my breeders.

I didn't get a photo of my bare back girl while she was bare. She was totally exposed, bare skin from just below the shoulders all the way to the base of the tail - beginning in June or end of May I believe.

Molt started last week so they are now growing in. This is what she looks like tonight on the roost..

I'm glad to see yours is. Pebbles is still bald only getting a feather here and there that almost immediately breaks off. Grrrr. Hopefully her molt starts soon.

Hello everyone!

Few updates to share...

Life has been super busy lately. I have a full time corporate job and started doing consulting work on the side. Happy to have more cash, but don't have as much time to spend with chickens! Since it is cold out, I don't really work outside anymore. This has lead me to start free ranging the birds at night after work. I was letting them out, keeping an eye on them, and then letting them go into their coop at night and just closing them up.

I was making dinner the other night when I heard the chickens going off about something. I opened up the back door and saw this...



I didn't take the picture of the Merlin Falcon, it is from Flickr. But this is exactly what was flying towards me! Most of the chickens had gotten into the coop. I had 2 roosters and a hen outside staying still fending off the bird. The littles (3 month old silkies) were huddled together under berry bushes and totally camouflaged. No one got hurt, and the bird flew away. I am so paranoid about leaving them out though now. It's been a few days and they have been cooped up.

Chicken Train Service

I will be making a trip down to Terre Haute to see family and go to the Bridge Festival in Park County next weekend (October 17-19). If anyone needs chicken train services please let me know!

I have 2 non-bearded white silkie cockerels free to a good home. They were born this spring and one has started to crow. They were purchased at RK, one is not standard at all and the other is really good looking. They are good around adults/kids and have been raised on Nutrena feed. Both are healthy and mite-free. If you are interested, please PM me and I will send pics.

Lastly, this morning I went to feed the littles and the guinea decided to fly the coop. Chased her down and got her back in. Guess I got my work out in first thing today! They are not easy to catch but I did get her within about 5 minutes.

This bird looks even more so like the one that keeps coming around here. Lots of barring and contrast to it.
It has swooped at my bantam OEGBs a couple times, and the guinea chase it off.

At least 3 have hatched so far! I didn't lift Maggie up all the way to check under her. She's such a good momma! They are Ancona ducklings. (And yes, some more brown chicken eggs got added to her nest by someone. The other day I took out 4 blue eggs from under her!)

I'll take these ones, thanks! Kidding, of course. They're all so pretty! Any ideas what colors the parents were to produce these ones? The first one looks like a more reddish version of my girl, Marge. So fluffy!

No pictures because it was after dark by the time we finished, but the duck coop has most of its walls up! Mom got the rafters up, too, while I was putting the first coat of paint on the outside of the walls. We just have a little bit more to go, and it's ready for occupancy!! I'll get pictures in the morning!

Oh, I also have to finish the quarantine space. I keep forgetting. Nearly there!

I did find some local slate gray heritage and bourbon red turkeys today. They have from young to adults to choose from. Cant wait to pick them up going to get a breeding trio, and a couple to process for this holiday season!!

You Marge is blue cream pip'd. Her parents must have been carrying the lavender gene. The top 3 chicks in my post are blue cream. Also known as porcelain in other breeds.
