INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

What's the brand on the mouse poison? (And I still would probably have to be totally overrun to use poison since the chickens and other animals eat slow moving dying mice, unfortunately.....)
I will ask my husband what it was called. I know it is a black box b/c I see them set around on top of shelves and such in the coop. Our chickens are penned in half of the coop and the other half is storage and rabbits so he put the poison boxes by our storage. I think it would be a pretty slim chance that the dying mouse would then go into the penned portion to die but it just depends on how your coop is set up. I know mice are a constant issue with chicken feed around and a warm house for them to try to winter in. I will get back on here once I find out the name of the poison.

The plastic box with poison that I put out was D-con. I have to say the mice did not make it far from the poison, the furthest I saw them make it was about 8 feet and there were 8 or so scattered about 3 feet from the trap. I am keeping the shed closed up for a while to try to keep them from getting out and consumed by an unsuspecting critter, and I burned the 13 bodies I found so far. I am also going to be super diligent about patroling and looking for bodies to burn so i'm not leaving a poisoned carcass where it might tempt something. I think the poison is never "safe" but you can mitigate some of the risks and make it "safer" to use. Again, I would not be doing this unless desperate...which I absolutely am!

I'm beginning to think this winter is not going t be good! I hate being a "Negative Nancy" but I need some help. Because I have been trying to deal with Chickee I haven't spent time with my girls outside. Today I went out to feed n water and decided to let them out to run around for the day. Weeeell... Earl chased Pickles into the duck pond, I got her out and brought her in to dry her off and and calm her down. I don't honk she's going back into her pen with Philo n Dilly. I neglected my babies so much I didn't know poor Pickles has an infected eye and she's whistling when she breathes. This is a sinus infection right? I bathed her in nice warm water and cleaned up her eye, trimmed the long feathers away from it and rubbed Vet RX on her beak and around her head to relieve the congestion. Is there anything else I can do for her? Can you put Vet RX around her eye? Will it help?
You're not a Negative Nancy! You've had bad luck with your animals lately. I agree with @kabhyper1 I wouldn't put VetRx in your chicken's eyes. Camphor is made from turpentine. Here's a link that has a good post by an experienced person "speckled hen" (toward the bottom of page) How to apply VetRx on Chicken - Backyard Chickens This link explains all of the uses for VetRx VetRx Directions for Poultry Info about respiratory issues: Respiratory Illness in Chickens - For Dummies Here's a recommended eye wash from, "Chicken Health for Dummies."
Thank you I knew about Boric acid wash for treatment of human eye issues, wasn't sure of proper mix nor if it was safe for chickens. Will use it this afternoon.

Thanks! Yes he is F1 of my Golden Cuckoo Marans breeding. With only a single barred gene as I bred his mamma to my Black Copper Marans to improve egg color and feathered shanks. She has none and of course my BCM roo has plenty. Unfortunately it's a slow process as he ended up with a small cluster of two on each leg! Lol. I will breed him back to his mother in the spring. It will take me several years to see how I'm doing as these are just a little project i decided to do. I love the personality of the breed and she lays more consistently than my other Marans. She just needs some work to her type. I love the barring too! Too many Black chickens here!! ;)

I understand you're having a serious conversation about a serious topic, but I have to thank you for the giggle I got when I read your post.

Your carcass-burning description made me think about zombie mice. Maybe the problem is that your neighbor HAS NOT been burning the bodies, and instead, been creating ZOMBIE MICE?!

It could happen....

Lol I'm not taking any chances on zombie mice!!!! Do you know how hard I've tried to kill these suckers?!?!?!!?? These jerks are staying dead!!!!

Thus far things in the shed are going well (not for the mice), I have removed 63 carcasses from the shed floor. I can not even wrap my head around how many are up in the loft......I am such a soft touch I am feeling guilty and sad about killing them....but it needs to be done. I wish they would just stay outside!!!!

Chickens are all looking healthy and hale so far...I am doing regular sweeps of the pens to make sure they aren't riddled with mouse corpses as well. I did find one untouched mouse corpse in the spare rooster pen.

have you thought about installing one of those sound devices. I saw an ad today in a coupon flyer 3 sound devices for $20 including shipping. I just updated the ones in my house less than a month ago. Still I'm thinking of getting more as they have to be changed out every other year or so.

I feel you on infestations. When we moved here our pole barn was over run. We had indoor cats at the time but no chickens. I was so nervous to put out poison and the barn was over 100 feet behind the house. The previous owner had left opened bags of dog food in the barn and had no concerns or fears of creatures that would help themselves. It took us almost a year to clear out racoons, opossums, mice, and wild rabbits.
I can tell you that my cats while they are killing machines don't kill 60 mice in a few days like poison can. And yes my barn cats kill any nearby rodents they choose. I just tell myself that at least that rodent did not make it to my place. I did have to ask one of the neighbors not to feed my cat. It can be hard mentally but really don't feed the barn cats every day, 2-3 times a week is fine if there are things they can kill.
