INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

would it be easier to cover the pool then keep them locked up? I have heard of people using childrens balls like the big rubber beach balls, floating in the water with a tarp over them to keep it elevated. I wouldnt know if that works or not , might encourage them to walk on it.

The wind here has taken our cover off for the past 8 winters. This is the first year we used a salt system. We opted not to replace the cover this year as it typically is off the pool in shreds before January or it is shredded and deeply under water. I was thinking with all of the salt in the pool water it would not freeze. As long as it was not frozen I did not think the birds would mess around with it as they had left it alone all summer.

ahh, I have that type of wind here too. sorry. its not your fault. if they havent messed with it before you would think it would be a one time thing . I would say it all depends on the value of your flock. there has to be a way how big is the pool? would lattice cover it?

24 foot diameter give or take whatever the pool place error margin is. I think it is a bit smaller than promised. To tell the truth, I'm not a lover of the pool but the children have fun in it. Maybe a few sheets of lattice would work. I'll look into it.
The value of the flock ~ that is a tough call. All of the chickens I had free Ranging are easily replaced but I only had the one tom. I knew it was risky but the hawks had not been around and that is what I though would get him if anything. Not the pool. My breeder chickens are not free ranged. The pet quality chickens are pulled out as I cull them and allowed to free range. But the best of the best only get to stay in their runs or tractor pens.

So what's wrong this year, anyhow?  I don't get it.  I've heard several people saying the same thing....that their spring pullets didn't lay this fall.  That is so strange.  I've never heard anyone mention that in prior years.

That is usually how it works for me. When I hatch in the spring they normally don't lay until next spring. But I have heard a lot of other people saying it this year

Quote: I have a strong hunch its the wild ducks. Especially if its not frozen, they are looking for open water. If he saw one swoop in, I bet he went after it and fell in

i have canadians and mallards even in that small pond we have out back. The canadians are getting more social with me every year.
I wonder if you can add to the porters order? Just a thought..In a pinch, I think you could use a Royal palm tom, and have splits but not 100% sure on the genetics. It would be pretty easy to find a tom in the royal palm color. If you post on the turkey thread, possibly someone will know.

Sooo its getting closer: December Solstice in Indianapolis, Indiana, U.S.A. is on Sunday, December 21, 2014 at 6:03 PM EST (Change city) I know I am sure ready to have more daylight.

Noticing that everyone's Christmas list this year is assorted gift cards LOL. I guess its become the easy answer to gifting. I kinda miss the surprise opening the box though! I can honestly say I am not ready
