INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Akers hatchery is in the south and they are more of a local set up than a full scale hatchery like Ideal.

Soap update. It is still a bit soft as it is supposed to be. It unmolded easily enough. BUT my toddler found it and started playing with the bars. Two bars remained untouched they are now curing. the remaining goo got remolded and we only lost about 1.5-2 ounces. Those ounces got smeared on the cooling / curing rack and the surrounding table area. The best part was my little guy thought for sure he had made a shark. And no need to test the PH now, as my little guy was covered hands to elbows and no chemical burns.

I'm looking to buy an ameraucana cockeral. I'm located in north central indiana, just south of Warsaw. Thanks.

Well, rats, it's cold again! :/ We've got some snow and drifting going on as well. Hope everyone's keeping warm! I had to cover some vents to keep snow from blowing into the coop. Here's hoping that doesn't cause my girls any issues!

I went out to get the girls in for the night and was suddenly aware that my Marans, Frou-Frou was missing from the coop! Fortunately for me, she replies when I call her name, so I quickly located her. She was 'snowed in' in a doghouse about 30 feet from the coop. I say 'snowed in' because the rest of the hens would have walked through the maybe-inch of snow that was there (and, indeed, some had, at least judging by the footprints), but not my Frou-Frou! I had to carry the darling to the coop to bed, because she simply couldn't find her way home.

I was getting the girls to roost and as there always is, there was some squabbling over who sat where. While rearranging a few girls on the roost, there was a sudden commotion up a few perches caused by the goofy golden Campine, Ihi, and just as suddenly, I ended up with a Campine tucked neatly under one arm. :love Though a bit inconvenient, I thought it was sweet that she knew to come to me to protect her.

I got a whopping 3 eggs today! (Well, there were a few more, but the littles have been laying eggs on the shelf instead of in the nests, and they have also been perching there, so... :sick ) Looks like young Kit-kit the Dorking is coming back into lay and she's been very, very squat happy as a result!

Less than 8 weeks until spring, y'all! I'm really looking so forward to it! :)

Is it legal or illegal to kill an opossum in Indiana?
Clearly letting a dog do the killing would not be a legal issue but what if I wanted to trap and do away with one or two.

Also do these critters travel in packs like wolves or are they loners?

Time to voice your opinion. The Indiana BYC t-shirt is in the designing stage. What color would everyone like to have? These shirts are being used to help fund the chickenfest party. Last year's shirt was a maroon or dark red color.

Here is the currently proposed design on blue.

I don't believe they travel in "packs" necessarily, but probably some kind of family group. I normally only see 1 possum at a time where racoon are more likely to be in groups.

If they're bothering your livestock you can trap, kill, whatever you need to do. There is a trapping season for them but on your own property you can protect livestock at any time.

If anyone on here is interested, I have 2 drake ducks to rehome. One khaki Campbell and one Pekin, both around a year old. Unfortunately, these guys hens were lost to predators and I don't think I'm going to get more waterfowl right now. Let me know if anyone wants them.

I have learned that you can trap remove or kill any wild animal that threatens you or your livestock. Opossum normally only travel with their babies, but that is not to say that you only have 1 in your area.

+1

possum on your property are fair game.

Pun noted, though not intended.

Our hens' egg laying has picked up finally. Hooray!
ya.gif

From 8 hens and 1 pullet, we were getting 1 egg every other day. Now, we're getting 5-6 eggs every day.
I don't think the pullet is laying yet. She's SO BIG! She's a 5 month old coronation sussex. She has the hugest fluffiest butt and cute little lilac feathers, and a tiny, tiny, pink comb...
