ZIONSVILLE PROPOSES TO LIMIT CHICKENS!!!

Did you see tonight's CBS 4 news? I've attached a link below.
This Monday is a town council meeting, and they will be voting on an ordinance to limit residents within the Urban Service District (I cannot find a map of this area.) to SIX HENS, no roosters, and no free ranging. Meeting info: Monday, February 2nd, 7:00 pm in the Beverly Harves Meeting Room, Zionsville Town Hall, 1100 West Oak Street, Zionsville, IN 46077.

On Town Council's website, I find mention of "urban service area" when it comes to wastewater and Ray's Trash. My house does have Ray's service, but not Zionsville for wastewater. So, I don't know if "urban service area" and "urban service district" are synonymous.

Whether this proposed ordinance would govern my area of Zionsville is irrelevant to me. I personally do not want to see these limits brought, especially given the ordinance would take IMMEDIATE effect, and there has been no time for the public to hear this information and act on it. I see no mention of this topic on the 1/5/2015 meeting agenda, and it is listed under "New Business" for this Monday's meeting. Though the public may have the opportunity to comment at that time, I feel that public has the right to have time to gather, provide input, and make their feelings known. I believe that anyone with chickens or planning to have chickens (ours arrive the week of April 6th) should be at that meeting to show our support for chicken keeping in Zionsville!

Please let me know if you can attend this meeting and if you can pass along this info to your Zionsville chicken keeping friends. I plan to be there!

@Leahs Mom You are in my prayers this weekend. Please know we are all here for you.

I have a big problem with my little midget white turkey tom. Time to confine his lil flock, he attacked, killed and proceeded to eat a mixed bantam rooster. This lil guy was maybe a pound, and a very aggressive roo. I saw the sparring between them, but the banty had flew off. 20 minutes later I pass by and my tom is eating something. The foolish lil rooster didn't leave it alone. I had to crate my tom and remove the poor bantams body. Now, they will not be able to free range... cannot allow any bird here to be that aggressive. Moving my trio to a pen tomorrow. My midget white hens are not chicken aggressive at all, I feel the lil rooster pushed him too far. As always I will share events like this. My MW Tom is tame to humans and easily picked up. He has a real problem with bantam roosters attacking his face and drawing blood from his snood. I am worried. however that he chose to eat the rooster after he killed him. Any thoughts? Really like this Tom. Do I cull or wait?

Can't really blame him -- some people like to eat aggressive roos, too!

just kidding! That is a weird thought -- that a turkey would eat a chicken. (Now if the chicken would have previously eaten a duck would the turkey now be one of those turducken things people make at Thanksgiving?! Sorry -- bad sense of humor at 6 am!)

That's a tough choice. My feeling is that it's going to continue to be a problem. With a bird that I really like, I would probably pen him and his harem if the banties are going to free range. He might not be a threat to LF since he is a midget.

It's my hen turkey that I have to watch--she doesn't like crests and will keep pulling them until the bird dies or escapes, so my silkies and Polish don't free range. Last week a pair of Polish escaped their coop and now both have bald centers in their crests. She doesn't seem to bother any that have free ranged as long as she can remember, only those who were previously penned.

Hey, all, sorry I went inactive for a few days! I honestly was sure that my old Cubby was on her way out and I didn't feel like posting much. She spent the past couple days with almost no appetite, not even wanting to eat the scrambled eggs I'd prepared for her. Yesterday, she decided to start eating again, and today she's eating like a cow! You know, like usual! Looks like she still has some fight left in her!

My Violet, who had a partial prolapse a few days ago, is back at 100% as well. I found the remains of a soft egg in one of the nests last night, but I don't know if that was her or not. I'm keeping on top of the oyster shell at the moment, making sure everyone has plenty of it if they want it. I don't like feeding layer feed because of the various ages in my flock, so the oyster shell is their main source of calcium.

We've got a nice, deep, wet, sloppy snow happening now. :/ But everyone's well in spite of it. I would have said happy, but the ducks don't have their pool, so they are definitely not happy. Poor abused critters.

Oh, and speaking of ducks, for those of you that have them, is it normal for a duck to kind of make a nest before she's even started laying? And does this mean she's thinking about laying her first egg? Trudi's been shaping a bowl-like spot in the bedding at the back corner of their temporary pen for a few days now. And she's also been very, err, needy with Malcolm as well.

I personally can't make the meeting.

However if you obtain an email, I'll email a nice letter in support of chickens.  Other members might as well.  It is what we have done in the past to help out with town meetings we could not attend.

X2! I can't do much, but I'll do what I can from here! Hoping the meeting goes well! :fl

Pretty girl! Dare I say it? She looks like my girl, Cressida! Of course, the only recent picture I have of her is her being an owl in the rafters of the coop.

Ugh, they have the bins set up in the RK in Fort Wayne... Gonna be a rough few months with that temptation. No chickies for me this year. :/

That works for us, too! :weee Can't wait!

Does anyone in Indiana (hopefully fairly close) have LF Ameraucana? No easter eggers...purebred birds only.
Thanks!

lol good luck. The problem is allot of people don't know the difference. I have went places to buy them and they have always turned out to me EE's and when you inform the owners of that fact they tend to get upset that you are insulting their birds. So actual breeders are the best, IMO.

I was in there last week and they had their first batch in. RIR and EE, but those sold out quickly. I was told Tuesday or Wednesday they would have another shipment. It's that time of the year, I plan to raise some chick's this year but not yet
