INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Well, class was called off for me today (which is a big shocker--IPFW never calls off!), so that gives me all day to deal with the snow! Yay?

Here's the view from my room this morning:

Ugh I see a lotta shoveling, be careful and safe.

Quote: Thanks for the opinion. I will be moving him and his hens to a pen, but its really too early, and unfair to the turkeys!. I know they enjoy their freedom. I hated to see the event, but that lil guy was a big problem. He would actually win fights with my less aggressive LF roos, like maran and orps. He chose the wrong opponent this time. I had not removed him, he had no where to go, honestly. That's the hard part of taking in unwanted birds. This is one that just "turned up" in the yard. No clue what breed it was, cream and gold with feathered feet, not even a pound if he was lucky.. and really aggressive. I have 7 waterfowl that's added themselves this last week, but suspect its my neighbors. 2 are american buff geese, 2 rouen, a runner and 2 pekin. I need to fence the property, soon.

We got a lot of snow this weekend. Local schools are all closed as we dig our way out from 17". On the bright side, all the kids are having a blast outside today.

Here's the measurement taken from the top of a garbage can
WOW and WOW I haven't seen that since I lived up in Lake Co. It is kinda fun, but soooo much work digging out too. I know the kids sure love it! I did

Is anyone looking into getting certified to be an NPIP tester? I am looking into it but the antigen is pretty pricey, didn't know if anyone would want to split an order.

We have a few folks on here that are.
Snow was out on the yard this morning and a bit more fell down through out the day but for the most part I would say much less than an inch accumulated. There might have been 2 inches in the places the wind blew the snow from our driveway. The medium woodchip pile has melted its snow top already. There must be some composting still going on in the pile. Just amazing.

As for the turkeys, they got moved into the large chicken coop with the RIRs. So far everyone is getting along almost great. For the first few hours the turkey hens ruled over all but something happened and soon the RIR hens took control. So every once in a while I'll hear the tom turkey get uptight or all puffed out as a RIR hen tries to peck a turkey hen that is almost twice her size. I have seen several roosters puff and such for each other. But the tom turkey can actually be heard when he puffs out and spreads his tail. It almost sounds like many people turning to a page in a thick book all at once, English lit class memories.
ROFL! That's such a great description! I love the drumming they do almost as much as the gobbles. My lil Midget white tom has become master of all he sees, for now. What a proud fella, he must examine any car that comes in and allow them to visit

or you can just grab him and he deflates pretty fast!

I seriously am loving this guy, what a big personality. He and my BBB turkey tom Bacon are good friends. Bacon just cares where the food is. They have not met my big Bourbon Red tom yet, coming very soon... I am concerned to let them free range until fall together. My bourbon tom is almost 4, and not as friendly. Massive bird. His hen is not socialized, I have worked hard with them and can handle them for basic needs, health checkups. He will get a few more hens this spring, and I plan to expand on the breed.

Does anyone here breed or know of someone that breeds Black Bantam Cochins? Or have a Rooster?

I have 3 Black Bantam Cochin ladies that I would like to get a Rooster for...or add some more ladies to. Just thought I would check here. I would rather get something local or nearby so I thought this would be a good place to start.

I wouldn't mind some Frizzles either!

I found a pair of white Silkies...but I just really like the Cochins! This below is Big Mama...I also have her two daughters! I haven't had them for very long, but they are just the cutest little things!

The T-shirts for the 2015 chicken fest should be going on sale soon, within the next week or 2. More information to come soon as well.

Up next is what other item would you like to see this year? A long sleeve shirt, a hoodie, a tote bag, now is the time to provide input as it looks like there might be 2 items for sale this year in support of the 2015 chicken fest.

I'd love a long sleeve option for the cooler months, either a long sleeve shirt or a hoodie.

She's so cute! I love the bantam Cochin too! I have a pair I'll be hatching more babes from this Spring. Already have an interested party for May babes if that's of any interest to you. I already sold a pair hatched back in Oct. frizzled boy with smooth girl. My roo is frizzled.

Here's the roo. Hen looks much like you pictured. She's more rounded though.

He looks pretty rough at the moment. He could use a bath! He's had plenty of them and loves it. He's such a good boy!! His tail is pretty ratty but winter months will do that!

I love the bantam cochins as well! Can't wait for them to start laying this year! I have lavender barred, buff barred, and partridge.

Beautiful brad!! I could have them all for sure! I try to minimize my bantam flocks though. Once my pens are built for spring breeding I will be keeping my silkies and bantam Cochins penned permanently for the most part. I've had too many picked off by predators and with my small # of them one day they will all be gone if I don't do something for them. Easy targets here. Although I've had my frizzled roo now for probably 3 years. His original mate and any offspring I had kept over the hatchlings non but his current girl have survived. I try to hatch a few for myself every year but find homes for any I am not keeping. At least I feel they are getting better odds elsewhere.

I may have to acquire some barred from you when my pens are built!! I really like them.
