Had to add a larger waterer to my brooder. just a small one that you get inside a brooder kit was not cutting it for 20 growing fuzz butts. So far they seem to be doing really well. I've tried to sex all them with your most common ways. (They were all pullets at rural king) and I came up with the same. All pullets!!

Thats great news!

thats great - we have got pullets from the pullet bins on 2 seperate occasions at 2 different stores & got a cockerel from each after they grew up. one of them got sold (& prob ended up as dinner) but the other one is our awesome EE roo 2-Tone (named as such because he is like a chimera - he looks like 2 different birds depending if you look at his left or right side) - so we are actually glad for the sexing mistake that we have him.

I have hen luck, like last year they were all pullets! Same with all my turkey poults, all hens

We need a few boys to keep our breeds going lol. I usually wind up searching for roosters. So far this year I think I finally have my quota. I have noticed the BYM surprise hatches yielded a few roosters for us finally.

I'm toying with putting in an order with Sand Hill Preservation Center if anyone wants some super rare breeds but can't meet the 25 chick minimum. Let me know if you are interested in adding to my order!

I'm looking at getting some Salmon Favorelle, Black Dorkings and Wheaten Marans.

They have a pretty cool list of birds available.

I highly recommend that if anyone is wanting to add a few birds this spring, that you look into this. It is an opportunity to get some higher than hatchery quality birds from a large choice of rare breeds without having to order 25 all at once. It is also a chance to support a small operation that has a goal of preserving unique breeds and not just hatching willy nilly to sell as many as possible.

X2 - If you read through the site they are focusing on things like saving and strengthening threatened breeds and building disease resistance into their breeds. It is VERY different from the hatcheries that are hatching out hundreds of birds with the only goal being selling large numbers.

It is a very worthy cause to support. You do need to group order if you only want a few though, they have a strict 25 chick minimum. They also only take orders by mail with a check and only hatch a couple of times a month.

If anyone else is interested in getting in on the order please let me know in the next 24 hours. I will be mailing the order tomorrow afternoon. It looks like we will have our order in on time for a March 24th hatch. So the chicks should be in my hands soon after.
