INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

ARRRGH! I have 6 turkey hens trying to sit on two wooden eggs and none are laying anymore. They all are just piled up in the nest. The boys are wandering around the run looking in corners wondering where they went. I think I'll take the wooden eggs away tomorrow and see if they give up.

When I tried to move my broody turkey she started laying again in about 48 hours. Maybe trade pens with a chicken group for a few days. I moved my formerly broody turkey back to where she had been broody and so far still no broody turkey.

I am ready to drop - I'll attempt to catch up on the last 48 hours sometime this weekend I hope! Busy couple days.

And you all should be very proud - somehow we ended this day with the same number of critters as we started with. We went to the opening day at RK, tons of people but they handled the crowd very well. I was not tempted to buy chicks at all! Really I wasn't - not when I can get them from all you wonderful peeps. Can't say the same for DH who has decided he wants turkeys. Really, I can't believe it took him this long! But we were 30 min. from home and had several stops to make so we could not buy any turkeys. And I told him we were not buying them from a feed store when there are several BYCers nearby who have turkeys!

After we got home and unloaded we headed out to look at a huge wooden brooder and I fell in love with a Nigerian Dwarf doe and whether this guy has. His bucks were good looking too, but this doe and whether were like dogs - they figured out I was a sucker for a cute fuzzy critter and followed me around with their tails wagging!!

So chickens really are the gateway livestock. Now we want a couple turkeys and goats - well actually we started talking about goats long before chickens so that is not new!

Okay - I need to build a cover for the pack and play brooder - which will be the step 2 brooder before they go into the huge one outside on the back porch. I better do that before I am too tired to handle a drill and hurt myself!

Have a good weekend everyone - looks like 2 nice days here in Indy before the next round of storms hits.

Today starts the incubation of a different type of egg! My female crestie has started laying again!

so cute. Love your fake mama hen!
Went to RK in Shelbyville between classes today to return a turkey poult which had passed... and they were out of turkeys but had some super cute bantams! So I picked up both silkies (look like they're buff) and the only mille fleur D'uccle they had.

RK in Martinsville has Wellies again! Picked up two "pullets" so we'll see if they both turn into roosters, given my luck this year. I'm hoping for a breeding quad of them next spring, given all the BYCers who can't seem to get a hold of them this year.

Here's one of the older bronze poults who just had to say hi to everyone!

These are of the 'big brooder' (aka a giant dog crate with blankets and heavy duty plastic) full of older chicks and week-old-or-sos.

Ick? that sucks. my dog doesnt eat dog poop but my chickens like his poop way too much!
I guess I was April Fooled today by my dog! After finally getting to bed (have to work at 6am tomorrow/this morning now), I woke up to my dog vomiting dog poop (yes you read that correctly!) all over my bed! Of course it soaked down to the mattress so now I'm sleeping on the couch while the scrubbed mattress dries and bedding being washed. almost got through the day....

Yes silly Birds. As soon as we got out there the hens came running to us like usual. Then only the JG was brave enough to stick around! She also was the scout in the snow and let everyone else know it wouldnt kill them. She may be the 2nd to last of the pecking order but she aint too chicken!

So, I just left Martinsville RK. They are loaded with birds right now.

Let's see what I can remember:
st run bantams (I saw a couple silkies, golden seabrights, silver seabrights, some OEGB, not sure what else.

BBW turkeys
st run guineas
Pekin ducks
khaki Campbell ducks
Indian runner ducks
RIR pullets
black sex link pullets
maybe BA pullet?

I don't know if that's everything but there were lots o chicks! Per my DW's advice, I stayed strong and didn't bring any home. Although I was very close to buying some runner ducks! I just rehome my last Pekin drake a few weeks ago and I'm out of the duck business for now.

HELP!!

I went to process a couple of roosters and noticed they have bugs!! What do I do? Does the whole coop need scrubbed down?

I've also got a broody sitting on eggs, how do I treat her? I just set the eggs last week so it's not like they're going to hatch soon but I don't want to treat her with something that's going to harm them!
