INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

I am so sorry to hear about the babies, Maybe bring the other 2 in and just putting them in a brooder for a couple of weeks until they are bigger. I have never hatched under a broody, so I don't know the problems that might incur from removing them from mother hen. I also have a couple of eggs in the incubator that are due to hatch tomorrow. 2 are from my yard and are rockin and chirping and I ordered some OEs and only 1 made it to lockdown, so I am glad I threw in my 2 eggs in case it hatches. I was really bummed that I was sent pullet eggs, but a lesson learned and will never order from there again.

They are all in the house but perhaps I will go ahead and separate them. Just gotta get another heat lamp. Maybe I'll swipe the older ones now. I have 3 of those stupid things plugged in all over the place!! Lol! Basement for the chicks that are now fully feathered, Living room with the babes that just hatched, and one in the garage for the baby ducks!!

I can't remember if I have another one stashed somewhere!!

I really want/need to get some of the brooder plates instead of having the lamps! They really do worry me.

I'm sure Heritage is correct.  I've spoken with a couple of people who raise chickens on a smaller scale and they are both big fans of the practice.

Yeah I think overall it's a good practice but I myself have some hatchery birds as well and no complaints. My original before I knew much of anything about where to get chick's I got from a hatchery and 3 of those are still with me and laying regularly even at 5/6 yrs of age..

What kind specifically are you hoping to find?

We do have a members list with locations and breeds if you wanna go take a look.

I don't have a specific breed I'm looking for. I'll have to find out what breeds are available and then choose. I do want to get started soon, though. The farm supply stores have chicks now but I don't want to rush into buying them.

Thanks for the link - I'll take a look to see if there is anyone close by.

I figured there would be roosters involved starting with chicks. The people I know with chickens aren't restricted to hens by ordinance, like I am, and would take one if needed. But, processing can be achieved!

With a 6 hen limit, I wonder if I should start with 8 chicks and hope for at least 4 hens!

2 of the 7 that hatched died the first night because their mommy wouldn't get off the two remaining unhatched eggs to save them from drowning in the water dish. I was POed and brought all the babies in. Set some other eggs under her because she was so determined to hatch those last two she wouldn't tend at all to teh ones already hatched. Poor babies were so hungry and thirsty

So yeah, until she's a better mom, I'm letting her hatch and just bringing the babies inside.

At least. I got 'sexed' pullets from a hatchery, and they're almost all boys. Fit to be tied, but the good news is that bitty roos are typically friendly and adorable fun while they last. Other option is to buy started or sure-fire gals that are older (12 weeks and up or of auto-sexing breeds that are younger)
