INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Wanted to drop in to share a few pics. Below are some of DD's chicks.

May turned out to be another hard month. (April Mom died unexpectedly from a cold or flu) Since then, my sis was put on O2, Dad's cold/ respiratory issues haven't resolved, my sis in law has severe bronchitis, & my bro will be declaring bankruptcy. At our house, DH had hernia surgery. He's recovering slowly, so I've been busy trying to keep the house & kids going. Meanwhile my own blood work has been abnormal for more than 10 months. My doc is sending me to a hematologist/ oncologist. Of course with all these sick people (& my kids who bring all kinds of germs home), it's still possible that my body is literally always fighting off infections. If anyone has had such an appointment - & a good outcome - please PM me with your story.

The chickens give me that bit of support. I enjoy the peeping in the house & the calls the hens make as soon as they spot me coming. DD still talks to the chicks & makes them follow her around the house.

7 week old chicks; eggs from Chickcrazed & Kittydoc

Some 1-2 wk old mixes (The incubator was empty, & some eggs accidentally found their way into it.)

Here's the challenge. Boy or girl??
Dad = Lav English Orp Mom = Easter Egger with pea comb & puffy cheeks
8 weeks

Because of the wide comb, I thought boy. Now the comb looks pale for an 8 wk old. It also looks kind of dainty. Especially when it's next to my 7wk old orp cockerel! (below) Should I stick with my orig male prediction?

I have 150 cornish x from Central Hatchery that need to go ASAP! I thought my order was cancelled. They were just delivered @4pm May 29. I DO NOT have the ability to care for any chicks right now. Located in Ft. Wayne, IN.

If it weren't such a drive I'd consider coming up to help you out of some of those as my wife and I discussed getting some X's....

Quote: I always wonder what people think when they see my children playing at full speed and not listening very well. Right now I choose not to test or medicate but they sure are high energy. As my oldest get more advanced in school I may have to rethink the medication. I really need him to sit still for 30-45 minutes for both math and reading classes.

Does anyone know where I can buy a couple Barred Rock pullets in central Indiana? Please PM if so.
I sent you a message.

Trapped a skunk out by my coop last night. I think it was to blame for my chick disappearances. Would a skunk eat a chick whole, feathers and all?
I lost two more of my momma broodys chicks last night. Apparently my skunk wasn't the culprit. WHAT is in my coop?!?!
@browncow15 (I edited your post to address that specific question). I've posted this before from my book, but this predator chart can also be found online, and it's surprising how many pages of the book are available for anyone to read for free: The Chicken Encyclopedia: An Illustrated Reference Anyone with chickens would be interested, and it would be especially helpful for newbies.

@chickiefreak ~ Sorry I just read your post about your poster project or I would have been happy to help with photos/info!

@pginsber
San Francisco is nice to visit, but…

And you are lucky to have a good chicken sitter!! I bet they're really expensive in SF. lol

I got a question, i'm going out to pull weeds any good ideas for killing them that won't harm the chickens?
@bearbottom I remember several people on our thread using variations of the white vinegar/salt/dish soap methods. Just google Vinegar weed killer and you'll find different recipes plus pros and cons.
@kittydoc ~ What's the latest on your neighbor? I am voting after your poll has probably closed -lol- but I vote to call animal control. I'm assuming that besides assessing the situation, and removing neglected animals, they report the owner's suspected mental health issues to authorities who can follow up and hopefully prevent future problems. I know it's not a perfect world, though. The Humane Society has info about reporting neglect. I really hate to hear about that isolated chicken! It's so cruel to isolate a social animal.
