INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Some pictures of my new babies!!!!! The lavenders are silkied ameraucana, the brown cuties are bielie girls and the black ones are black split to lavender ameraucana and isbar/bielie (olive egger) mix babies. The little fluffy ameraucana faces are killing me! So excited!
Oh my goodness, the faces!! And the cheeks!! I'll take the whole set! :love (Seriously, though, adorable babies! :D )
congrats! Put me down as your first order of silkied ams! I just found out there are silkied bantam Cochins now too that was a freak mutation (supposedly) and no silkie mixed in with them. I want them now too!
Oh, those are on my list, too! :love Ever since I saw this picture of a silkied Cochin hen a few months ago on FB:

Sign me up! Those have a slot on my want list close to the top, along with the silkied Ameraucanas, and silkied Seramas, and silkied Hedemoras... I'm going to have a silkie farm, apparently. Both the Cochins and the Ameraucanas came from a spontaneous mutation from what I've read. Interestingly enough, they both seem to have appeared out of BBS lines. When you think about it, there is WAAAY too much to breed away from if you cross Silkies into a line. You'd be breeding away from dark skin, 5 toes, crests, beards, and comb type for generations, just to get recessive silkie feather genes into a line! :th Not that I need any more projects on my list, but now that I'm thinking about it, it wouldn't be too difficult to breed a line of silkied OEGB with the right color and quality of silkied American Serama... And the list gets a little longer.
I have not yet had to break a Broody. She broke herself this winter when it dropped to -3! but my first plan was to use a dog kennel, without the bottom tray, raised on cinder blocks. I recently read someone who puts icepacks in the nesting box. My newest plan will be to put broodies in my large Guinea brooder - it has a removable floor, with hardware cloth on the bottom. Hoping that cools them down enough.
@bradselig OMG that is the same with my Cochin girls. They are even meaner than the bigger girls when they are broody! How do you break them? Do they ever just snap out of it on their own?
My broodies have not been discriminating by breed. I've had Sebrights, Dorkings, Wyandottes, a certain grumpy-faced Silkie, and even my young Marans and Legbar brooding in the past few weeks! :th So... Many... Broodies... Anyway, I just wanted to say, all I ever do with broodies is keep them off the nest in a separate pen. I've personally never noticed a difference in the length of time it takes for them to snap out of it when they are on wire versus a solid floor, so they just go into whichever pen is free at the time. The one that inevitably stays broody the longest, my Lady Broody Wyandotte, broods for about 2 weeks no matter what I do with her; the rest have broken in a week or less using either method. :) As a side note, the Dorkings both break within 48 hours. Elly takes less than a day to convince and Kit-kit takes a day or two, usually just one. Just another Dorking benefit for those of us that don't want or need broodies. ;) And also, I'm not in the area and don't know anyone outside of this thread that is, but best of luck to you and the rest of the Indy chickeners with this rezone thing! :fl

And since I'm here, here's your dose of Crashie duck for the day. :D

While I'm at it, I'm wondering if anyone has preserved an eggshell before? I was thinking of keeping Crashie's shell, but the membrane appears to be blackening like it's rotting, especially where his veins were... :sick I'm wondering if anyone knows if it can be salvaged at this point so that I can keep it?

Wow do I have allot to catch up on. Hate being to tired at night to get on and at least read a little to keep caught up....... but I guess I'm old and lazy... lol
Hope everyone is well and keeping as cool as possible, I know I have 10 fans going outside for the chickens and goats and got 1 monster fan on for the horses, We have been hauling a load of water ( 110 gal. ) a day in to refresh everyone's water, I have tarps up everyplace just to add shady spots. Neighbors probably hate it but I really don't care. Waiting for our Neighborhood uppity Drunk to come say something, but hasn't yet, shocker, he has something to say about everything. Best one is still " teach your roosters to only crow after Noon " so far... lol
We have been working on allot of thing around here for mths but an important one was just finished yesterday, in the rain, cause we were so close to being done we didn't want to stop... Here are some pic's of the Goats enjoying their New Goat Yard. I'm so glad its done.

Hope everyone has a great day. I made myslef sick in the rain yesterday so I'm going to try and do some catching up on the thread now.

Your goats are way to cute. Not showing my husband or his grandmother thous pics. Same goes with the cute little duck pics. Before i know it there will be goats and ducks running around my yard. I'm sraced the goat will be in my house. Same goes with any one that may happen to post pig pics. I know the pig will end up in the house and not on a plate. It's hard enough trying to keep his chicken out side. Lol

a good friend of mine e-mailed me the other day and gave me one of her horses cause she has had medical problems and the person that was supposed to be taking care of them apparently wasn't doing the job with her old toothless mare.
This is the same mare that I rescued as a youngster from people that were starving her. She should have died she was so bad, but I got her back up and healthy and sold her to another woman I knew, who I found out a few years latter was not taking very good care of her. I took her back and once again got her back up and healthy and sold her to this woman. This woman has had her for 7 years. The mare has lost 12 of her teeth and now has to eat special food, which was great till she started having medical ( the woman ) issues. The mares food has to be soaked and measured and feed 2x a day. Well that other person wasn't doing it. So I have her back again and she looks bad. I have been crying every time I go out to feed and brush and just be with her. I feel like I let her down cause I gave her my word she would never have to go through this again, and yet here she is 7 years latter. I told DH she is now a permanent resident, If I get her back up this time, she will never leave me again.

I used that same method (along with the icepacks) on my blue silkie a couple of months ago. I set it up under a couple of bushes for a few hours. I felt bad about doing it since she was stressed. All the other hens gathered around her jail cell. I finally put a blanket over part of it to give her some privacy. The next day she walked out of the coop like she'd never been broody. I'm not sure if it actually worked or if she would have called it quits anyway. Both of my silkies have gone broody for short periods. It's kind like calling in work sick. haha

@chick rookie I hear ya about being so tired at night after working and taking care of animals. You have so many to care for, and you're doing a great job! I know that my hens appreciate all the fans blowing on them, all the fresh cool water, and cool fruit treats because they have all been laying really well despite the terrible heat and humidity.

Although I've complained about the summer temps, I'll take this anytime over freezing, dreary winter weather!

Looks like they put the spin on this! (excerpt from Indy Rezone - City of Indianapolis)

We had 2 EE chicks hatch the end of last week under one of our broodie hens - The 1st of 3 Iowa eggs is zipping under Broodie #2 . Broodie #3 had a hatch about 5 weeks ago, & wanting to be broodie again - i tell her we dont need any more chicks to hatch, but she's not listening . . . . .

the 2 EEs are a white one & a dark brown one, so are tenatively identified as vanilla + chocolate. i'll post some pictures soon . . . . . . . & they will be 4-sale
