INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

@Indyshent I enjoyed reading about your Life on the Farm! Sounds like you have four great pets with dragon names that are "keepers"!

Whew, it's a toughy. We purchased four in the hopes that we could eat "the jerks" so, if we don't eat some of these pretties... well, I'll have a lot of people royally mad at me come Thanksgiving. Hormones may make us want one dead later, but... I love my birds, and turkeys are just magic like that. Even if I get talked out of one, I'm not sure if I'll be able to eat it at this rate.

The biggest threat for them, however, is the expense of feeding them. These turk-turks can really put it away, so a no-waste feeder isn't exactly something I would consult Magic 8-Ball about. Feeding rate has definitely slowed since I rehomed the ducks, but we're still going through 50lbs every few days. For instance, on July 5, I had five 50lb bags of feed. I have one left. This is a very marked improvement over 50lb every 1.5-to-2 days, but it's still grotesque considering our current income (and, even more to the point, our stupidly ludicrous expenses). If we could finally get the house in Fayetteville to sell (been on market for 6 years), we could afford a lot more (including necessary things like doctor's visits) but God's got other plans, and so a house in a different state is still sucking away the vast majority of our money.

In speaking of pet turkeys, however, Saphira started making whining dog noises yesterday. Anyone else had experience with this vocalization before? I'm used to the dinosaur noises and peeping, but we seriously thought we had a puppy on the premises for awhile. This isn't the first time I've wished I could find my cellphone, but it's one of the more interesting reasons ;)

"That gnat took a notch out of your cornea," the doctor told me.

This past weekend on Saturday afternoon, I was in the side yard with my Jubilee Orp, Adeline. She's been the only chicken brave enough to come out for a break. They've all been hiding underneath the deck because of aggressive gnats that have been out in force the past week. I've been spraying DEET all over me except for my face where I've used natural oil repellent, which I've also used on Adeline. Suddenly my right eye took a direct hit from a gnat! I washed my eye out, but it's been all downhill from there. I went to the doc today where my eyes were put through more torture. My right cornea is damaged, but will heal. Both eyes have abrasions from rubbing them while I've slept, which also spread the infection from the dirty insect into my left eye! I'll be fine after using two meds for a week.

I guess I'll have to wear a bee keeper's suit to protect myself.

Hope you feel better soon!

I really need some help!

Im trying to figure out what to do next. I have treated my chicks for coccidiosis ( I treated all chickens even if housed separate), first cycle was 5 days, waited about a week and a half...because they started to look bad again. Treated them for 5 more days...about 3 days later a few started to act down again. We lost one on Sunday, she was about 3 months old. Currently, I have 1 cochin boy about 2 months old and he is not wanting to eat but he is drinking on his own. Today will be day 7 of the 3rd corrid treatment. He is the only one that is acting sleepy and not eating on his own. I am wondering if it is Enteritis? I am getting ready to run to TSC and pick up some rooster booster, it has Bacitracin (Bmd) in it? I JUST DONT KNOW WHAT TO DO!!!!!!

Are you changing the water/medication daily during treatment? Also, if your water has a lot of iron/rust or sediment it might be affecting the medication and making it less effective. The symptoms sure do sound like cocci to me. You might also want to call the Indiana State Poultry Association. They will be able to advise treatment over the phone.

@chickrookie Dosage is 2 teaspoons per gallon. Treat for 7 days for the first round. You may have to give them the mixed water solution in a dropper to make sure they get enough of the meds.

So sorry about your losses. We too are dealing with the same thing.

Coccidosis, treat all birds with Corrid ASAP.
Thanks so much you guys. I thought that was what was going on but wanted another to say it, kinda confirm ya know... anyway got everyone treated, treated the sicker looking ones directly with a dropper. Do ya all know how long it will take to see improvement? Worried about loosing the ones showing symptoms?? I bought all these Silkies to bring in new blood line, and I don't have a lot left. this hit fast!!

@Acornewell I have used the baby drops before, I used a full dropper a day for 4 days then they started drinking on their own so I put 2 full droppers in a gal. chick water thing. I kept that up for a week and all was well. BUT that was just what I did. must change water every day.

@Mother2Hens
If he will take care of them their whole lives I'll be happy to send them to him. I guess leaving them in the woods isn't going to be an option.

I'm not sure the current laws on shipping into Indiana but if you can ship them preferably ups or somthing that is direct to my door(us mail will ship to a post office) I'll take all three I have chicks that old they willbenjoy the company and the orp will go into my breeding program

And on another note I'm thinking about starting a project bird or "new" breed based off the jersey giant (size) and road island red (egg production) any thoughts

I was thinking to call Pat Wakenell at Purdue University, maybe the vet students can help you.

@chickrookie I noticed changed within 24 hours when I started treating mine. If they were sort of lifeless in the corner, unfortunately those chicks died. I did turn on the heat light for them and they seemed to like that.

If you end up with the same aftermath as I am, hopefully I will have found the solution!!!
