INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

We had coq au vin compliments of our unpredictable roo last Friday. I found a great online crock pot recipe and we cooked him nearly 12 hours. He was delicious and we felt avenged. I have two potential replacements for him.

We did chicken musical chairs and put his former hens back in the layer flock, cleaned that pen and put four English Orp chicks in there, blue and chocolate cuckoo cockerels and black and chocolate pullets, plus our Orpacauna olive egger pullet Olivia. Oly is black with a weird comb, but the slender agility of her red wheaten mother Sam. She escaped from a locked pen then flipped out when she couldn't get back to her chocolate buddies. The older blue and black chicks have shown the new 3 the ropes. Then we cleaned the garage brooder and moved the bedroom babies into more spacious digs in the garage. Now to clean all the incubating and early brooding equipment away!

The Bieles were quiet and panting hard yesterday. I'll ice their water today. They are about 3.5 months old but are big. Not heavy, but long and tall, and have had mature plumage a long time. I almost forget how young they are. Most of the girls are much bigger than Sam, our Ameracauna.

Our AC took a dump on us, so we are hot too. Darned system is only 3 years old. Do not use Mr. Quik for anything, folks.

I am glad that your unpredictable roo was at least tasty, I wish I could bring myslef to eat a few I have had.
We lost our ac Monday, it's old, DH is working on it today!! I'm tired of melting. I feel dirty even after a bath, its not 5 min. and I'm all sweaty again

We also have been playing chicken musical chairs with birds coming out of isolation and Juvies getting their own place or joining their new flock mates. I love seeing them make it too this point, especially after loosing so many this year.

Sorry about your chicks! I'm struggling here too. I've lost 4 in the last 2 days, it's been awful! I had to put one of my roos I was raising for meat out if his misery tonight too. Looks like his crop got impacted on some long grass.

And I still have a rat in my coop! No losses but I found a pile of fresh turds tonight.

Sorry about your chicks, It is tough loosing them I just hope I don't lose anymore.
Hope you get rid of your RAT soon, I hate those things.

Thank you chick rookie and daskhan. I suppose the county extension office would be the place to ask about if I need to register my property as a farm huh? They have on their website that there is no minimum acreage to register, but what you want to bet I get some looks if I try to register 1/2 acre? Hehehe.

Chick rookie, Im sorry you lost so many chicks! I lost 11 myself about a month ago. Turned out the whole batch had cocci from the place I got them from. I managed to save 12 thankfully. That didnt stop me from feeling bad over the 11 little babies I couldnt save. Its rough

NP I think that might put a few confused looks your way... lol but hey I don't think it matters how big a farm is. If its ran as a farm its a farm.
I don't know if the new chicks I brought in was carrying Cocci or it was just from all this rain giving it a foot hold. I don't think ANY of my coops haven't been in water at some point this year. I have 4 houses that we tore down and burnt do to rot and mold starting. now my place looks like Tent City...

got to have shelter till the new houses are built.




Now its time to get off the depressing stuff and on to the happy stuff:
I moved Blackbeard ( new EE Roo from @Indyshent ) in with his new ladies yesterday, it went well I think. How could it not? He is such a handsome fella.

I think I did good for a tent coop...lol

P.Rock and his new girls ( 7 W R's ) don't even have a tent yet, ran out of frames, so they are in the back yard in MY Gazebo


His women didn't take to him as fast as Blackbeard's did. They are still standoffish but I'm sure he will win them over soon.
Summer and Kellogg Don't like their picture taken but I did manage to get a non-blurry pic of summer.

Are the replacements you mentioned for the flock or the crock pot?

Ha ha, they're for the girls, not the pot (at this time). I need a lavender roo so I don't have so many splits to sell/give away, but I needed to do a "black" year since I didn't know how many years my lavs had been bred consecutively when I got them. I think both are Cogburn's boys, so I doubt disposition will be a problem! We don't know what was wrong with that rooster, honestly. His sisters, who are the mothers of all the lavs and splits I raised this year, are fine. Boys will be boys, I guess. Sometimes. It's nice not to have any tension on our part when entering LaRue's old pen. I never have to worry about getting hit from behind by my Jubilees or Cog, and it will also be much safer for our chicken sitters when we go on vacation.

I had the roof of my sun room replaced. Trying to think of a way to reuse them. They are about 12 ft long, 3ft wide and 3 inches thick. Painted Metal on the Top and bottom and the insulation is exposed on the sides. I could use them for the flooring and that would be good insulation and I could just throw the bedding on top. I could also maybe put it on the inside of the coop but I think that would be a little bit too much insulation and they would fry during the summer. I love to reuse, repurpose, up cycle so any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Anyone? Thoughts?

So glad they're working out for you! Is it me, or does Blackbeard look ecstatic?


Hopefully your Bully calms down a bit with some more space and room to assert all those hormones. As one of nine roos with nowhere to go and no personal ladies, it's not too surprising that his increased hormones and a new place have brought some unforeseen personality quirks. He was able to be handled here and calmed down pretty quick once we picked him up, but, hey, he's a roo, and once they start growing up, it's a rollercoaster. If he doesn't work out, there's always Coq Au Vin.

Quick heads up if anyone in the area is interested.

The new Rural King in Greenwood has a sign out back that says "free wood" Looked like they had a bunch of pallets and scrap lumber up for grabs. It wasn't in the best shape, alot of them were a bit broken etc. But if someone needed some scrap pieces for a coop there may be enough there.

O yes Blackbeard is ecstatic!! He loves his ladies!! He was so busy checking things out and doing his " Duty " that he didn't know which to do first and trying to get a good pic was ... well ... you seen the best I could get. lol
Kellogg is not really a bully he just don't trust us yet, I have no doubt he will come around, especially now that he has his own ladies and room to free range.
and even if he don't work out he will find another home, no Coq Au Vin here.... what ever that is.
