INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

hahahahah.... yes. I think I could make a wonderful week of work doing animal chores without the stress of the regular work day.

I wonder if there's a market for it? I guess one could advertise in the local farm papers.

I know of a few people doing it as a business around Indy. I am sure there is some kind of market as supplemental income, but I doubt it could be considered a FULL TIME gig since people all tend to go out of town at the same time (summer, fall break, spring break) and other times of the year business could be scarce. I'd rather pay really well and have someone reliable that won't ever say NO!!!!! Since I live out in the country I don't have any friends that live real close, so even just having a friend come over twice a day would mean two hours in the car for someone (30 minutes each way twice a day). I'd rather pay someone than put a friend out as a favor.

I also expect more than most people who pay a pet-sitter. I want someone to hang out with my dogs all day and act as door keeper for the little furry fools, and give them lots of snuggles. They deserve no less

I know for sure that a good adult that is reliable is likely worth it.

If I lived in an area where there were people withing walking distance and we could trade that would be great. We have a guy that was one of my dad's caregivers who is out of work at present. When he was taking care of my dad, he was there every morning (where the chickens are) so he did it when we were gone. Now I'm planning on having him do it, but he does have to drive over and he's not there for the other job so that makes me have to figure out how to pay....and since he's out of work at the moment, I want to be generous.

Hopefully I can find someone in walking distance for the future. But at least I know that this fellow is trustworthy and responsible and will take care of things well.

I'm one of those rare people that find enjoyment in watching animals make fools of themselves and it just lightens me all up if for instance someone gave me 100 a day to watch animals I'd gladly sit there all day watching them with a bowl of popcorn... And that would probably cover my gas... Currently I only make like 200-400 a month so not exactly thrilled with this job

If you want ideas besides cash for someone who is out of work, many of the assistance places provide food but not so much soap or other things a person might buy at a store.

Anyone looking to take a vacation and needs a farm sitter please pm me...
Ohh if you were only closer. I could come up with a list of pets or even children full of energy to watch. The cats are amusing but don't need any care other than flea meds once a month. The birds are extremely fun to watch when the cats are out and teaching the one little kitten to chase things. The goats are calming but need milking and the most monitoring / hands on attention. Then there are the children. Let them out of the house and one never knows what to expect, races, a game of tag, turning our wood chips into a digging zone, clearing the tomato garden out of green tomatoes (they thought those were the bad tomatoes). Ohh how the children know how to have fun. And it has to be highly entertaining for someone who is not their parent.
I'd have to say entertainment abounds here. Some day I may drastically decrease the number of our chickens and get a pig. If that happens then I can only imagine the fun times and the increased difficulty in finding a homestead sitter.

On a different note, does anyone need or want fresh eggs. I'm leery of selling them on Craigslist but not so much here.

Vacation pet sitter:
Funny this comes up as we're driving around on our own vacation. We're very fortunate to have fantastic neighbors. Woman next door buys dog biscuits & doesn't even own a dog! She would be personally insulted if we allowed anyone but her watch our dogs. She gets paid with dog snuggles & some type of souvenir. Another family usually cares for the flock. They get paid with eggs, entertainment, & we care for their small pets in return. This summer we have a HUGE Monarch butterfly project going on. Our 2 pet &house sitters are sharing the care of them. Each day we're getting pics & texts about the butterflies released. #72-74 were released this morning. I truly don't know what I should pay for insect care. Perhaps their own pet larvae?

Oh thats so cool! I took a chrysalis in as a show n tell for 1st grade, my teacher was very pleased. I cut the milkweed plant off and brought it in a big plastic cup.. Our class was lucky enough to watch the final part of metamorphisis around lunch when the monarch emerged. The surprise was the look on my parents faces when they read the letter thanking them for the great idea. They had no idea I did it!
