Hi all I have 2 ducks a male and a female they were in with my chickens never have had a problem last week the male killed one of my laying hens I was so upset I was told after that male Ducks will try and mate the hens when they begin to lay and they are very brutal to the hen well since this happen I have moved my ducks to a coop of their on but now the male is very aggressive to me he pecks my feet and legs and just runs crazy when I enter his coop this morning I was changing his water and he jumped up and got me on the ear I love my ducks but I don't know what to do is this normal I go in several times Daily and talk to them and pet them he's always been very gentle until last week please I need any advise I don't want to get rid of him I had him before I got the chickens thanks
Wow! Yes not good. I have never had an aggressive duck and I have around 60 right now. Have owned hundreds, we breed and hatch several every year. I keep rouen, pekin, swedish, and Muscovy. My advice is training. when he gets aggressive, either grab him up and hold him, or pin him to the ground. Loud stern angry voice! NO! BAD DRAKE! Repeat the words and make eye contact the entire time. Hold him until he is not struggling. Of course, not so hard that you harm him, pinning is a dominant act that waterfowl, and most poultry use. Its their natural way in communicating you are the alpha.Staring down is also dominance, and needs to be part of his training as well.
It may only take once, or may take several tries. Just depends on the drake. Anyone in your family has to also do this if they are in contact with the drake. This works with poultry also. I can't guarantee it will stop his aggression, but works for us 99% of the time. Good luck, let us know how it goes.

Hello All! I am a fellow south side resident and rather new to chicken keeping. Chicken math hit me hard and I now have 27 birds from 8 weeks to 2 years :) My favorites are the Swedish Flower hens and Cream Legbars but I lucked into a couple of Ayam Cemani and a couple of frizzle Tolbunt Polish so we have a pretty diverse group! I am thrilled to find an active group in the state and the wealth of knowledge that is shared on this site, Thank you all for sharing your experience!

Hello and welcome to our thread

You have a beautiful flock!

Hey all! It's been awhile my phone wasn't letting me post for some reason. It still won't let me PM.

So @ellymayRans I got your message just couldn't reply. I got 9 chicks out of the 12 eggs from you. I'm having rotten luck keeping babies alive for some reason this season though so I'm down to 5 of which I think maybe 2 are girls. Oh well that's usually the way it goes around here.

I hope everyone is well and has been enjoying this great weather. It's nice to see some new faces around here!

Is he human aggressive? Some roosters just are.. They are good with the flock but hate people. I have had a small handful of mean ones, it was before I kept multiple roosters. 3 of them were australorps, one wyandotte and an EE roo. Oh and a polish that was fine unless I had winter boots on lol! Some can be broken of it, Picking them up and carrying them around.
Yeah, I have that polish now. He got used to my winter clothes and no problem. Then I went out there is shorts and bare hands!

We've come to an understanding now, but waiting to see what happens when cold weather gear is back! He's good to his ladies, though.

Just wanted to share cause I think it is cute. DH took this with his phone and then sent it to me while he was at work. Why he waited??????
This is the hen that was trying to hatch for 3 months so DH went and got her 6 BO's to put under her and see if she would take them. She took 1

So the other 5 are in the house.

Hello all! Brad here on the Southside of Indy, just found this thread of fellow Hoosiers. I'm new to the chicken world but so far so good! I have 3 RIR's, 3 ISA's, all 18 weeks old. Five of the six are now laying. Also have 3 BA's and 3 Americana's. They are 4 weeks old. Here is some pics of the coop and run as well as my girls having some yogurt.
