INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

While driving down to pick up my daughter/drop of my husband for an extended weekend, I got to meet @ellymayRans again! She's such a cool lady (and apparently has great taste in custom mix feed because my birds are already loving it!).

I stopped by RK in Martinsville to pick up more chicken chow (esp for the babies!) and picked up a new toy and some special root beers for my son's 7th birthday tomorrow. His dad is already not going to be there, and he doesn't have any friends to come over; the only people who are going to be able to make it at all are going to be his two siblings, me (who also has to study for a calculus exam the following morning) and my parents. So yeah, it was already going to be pretty miserable... and then, as I was hauling the feed into the garage, someone stole the all the root beer from my car.

At least I'll be able to keep his favorite hens.
It never ceases to amaze me how cold some people can be. If someone is in that much need, why can't they just ask.

Tatally agree on the blacks. I have a black orp roo from @kittydoc and he is a stunning boy! Huge, friendly guy and I just adore him. I am doing splits next year so he will have his own pen, and ladies.
Yes I still have both of my orp roos - also from Kittydoc. The way she talked about her wonderful Cogburn made me want one. Well now I have 2 of his sons & still can't figure out which one to keep!!! Both are very sweet protectors & not at all aggressive toward people. One is the Romeo. He has the handsome English Orp appearance & is more gentle with the hens. The girls gladly follow him around. The other is the protector. He's more athletic & a great hawk spotter. He's always mindful & never goes into the coop at night until the very last hen is safely inside. Both allow me to pick them up & they don't fight each other. Eventually, I hope to find a perfect home for one, but until then, I have two terrific roos. After losing my precious Biele Boy (who was actually the biggest), I'm in no rush to get rid of my back-up.

Had a great day relaxing outside with all my babies and taking tons of pictures!!!

I just love seeing everyones pictures of their birds and I just love to show you guys all of mine. Today I'm gonna show ya something that I started working on last spring. I crossed a polish with a frizzle cochin ( all bantam size) and got some some very interesting and beautiful birds out of the mix. And if I have my genetics right they all carry the frizzle gene ( dad was the frizzle). Is that right, they can carry the gene, but not actually be frizzled?

Here Goes

Brrrr! Just closed coops, yikes its cold out. Time to dig out winter clothes and put up summer stuff I guess :( .
I refuse. I wore shorts and a jacked out to close the coops. I'm in complete denial of the coming winter. EDIT: Jacket, that is...

Oh, boy, frizzle genetics are tricky. Those of you that don't want a headache should stop reading here... If I remember correctly, though, ONE part of frizzling is partially dominant (F), and the OTHER is recessive (Mf+). The recessive gene is not well known and seems uncommon, but it's hard to know which birds may be carrying it. It's called the frizzle modifier, and birds homozygous for it (mf/mf) will NOT be frizzled if they carry ONE frizzle gene (F/f+) but WILL be frizzled if they are homozygous for frizzling (F/F). HOWEVER, a bird can also be frizzled (or, in the case of homozygous frizzles, 'curly') and NOT carry the modifier (F/f+ Mf+/Mf+ or F/F Mf+/Mf+) or carry it heterozygously without it having an effect due to it being recessive (F/f+ Mf+/mf or F/F Mf+/mf). SO, with that explanation over with... If one or both parents are actually carrying the modifier, then SOME of the offspring COULD be carrying frizzle. BUT, if neither parent carries the modifier, or if only one parent is carrying ONE modifier (Mf+/mf), then only the birds that appear frizzled have the gene. So basically, yes, they could be carrying the gene--but it would take some test crossing to find out for sure. Absolutely beautiful birds, by the way! :)
