INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

I AM SO FRUSTRATED!   Just had a visit from the county inspector.  A neighbor complained that we were building a chicken coop and she doesn't want chickens near her house. :he
He said we can't have them because our property is not zoned Ag.

I am so bummed.  I can re-home them easy enough, but that is not the point.  We raised them from day old chicks and we really don't want to get rid of them.

I have 4 very sad children!!!!

Stupid neighbor! Sorry to hear. :( I would start looking at your laws & regulations & start fighting it if possible. Def maybe say pets too.

Posted on the main welcome page but wanted to come over here also. Wanted to say a quick Hi to the Indiana members.
I'm new to BYC - I own Great Inspirations Farm in Chesterton/Westville -- we are a CSA and will be adding chicks in the near future. After I figure out how to make a free-ranging coyote and raccoon proof run! :)
Well looking forward to learning more with you.

Well we got the coop moved to it's permanent location. Just need to build a run. The Alpacas don't seem to mind it. I think my husband did a pretty good job for his first coop. ;)

Very nice!

Hello all! I thought it might be time for a formal introduction. My name is Jeanne and I live outside of Chesterton/Valpo area.
My husband is Jason and we have 1 daughter(age 7) and God willing, another in the oven soon. We have about a little over an acre and last year discovered the wonderful world of chickens. We started with 6, then 6 more, then 5 more for a total of 17. We did very well with them, but wound up with an oopsy Rooster we tried to keep and named him Fred. He was a Partidge Rock and I loved him, but he began trying to attack my daughter..after an internal struggle with ethics, we decided to cull him. We fed him to our great dane Milly(who is pretty much my life, after my daughter). She eats raw chicken everyday, just not OUR chickens. She is actually really good with our girls. We also have 4 cats, a great dane and a rescue bunny named Pongo in our family.
We have not had any predation issues, but did lose one of Barred Rock Girls(Grace was her name)...she got her head stuck in a fence and when we found her it was too late

. My daughter was crushed and wanted to burry her, so we had to have a little chicken funeral and made her a nice memorial garden. My daughter is just like me with animals..loves them all and would not dream of hurting one...she is a true rescuer at heart..She is constantly telling family our chickens are NOT meat birds!

We have 20 chicks in the brooder now, mostly production type birds. I am now looking to add Silkies & Cochins that will be more like pets for us and have there own special coop . Our girls now are like pets and have the best of everything, but we are hoping to do 4-h and poultry shows with our daughter.

I am looking forward to getting to know everyone here and learn more about this poultry addiction we all have :)

Congrats on the new baby, what a beautiful name!

So glad you've joined us!

I got so excited about the idea of playing outside with the chicks......then it rains....allllll day and so cold! Oh, Indiana..you MUST be bipolar! Unrelated note (kind of) introduced grit yesterday..I know I started late but im New at this!

She is trying to pull "pecking order" on you, just like a hen! There is always one in the neighborhood. Sad for them, they are so unhappy they try to make everyone around them unhappy too! Give it right back to her, bet she leaves you alone after she gets a few knocks at her door! I love my area, and have good neighbors nearby. I had a lil stinker just like her when we lived in town that would complain if the kids were too loud, If my DH started his motorcycle... So I called about her yappy dog, her car with the rattly muffler. When the police arrived, I would stand at my doorway, just like her, and glare. She caught on pretty quick!

Hello new to all of this I got 19 red pullets and 2 golden turkeys for my birthday. We have a coop and run ready for them. They are in a box in my living room right now when would be a good time to move them outside. I have been on here reading everything I can. Help if you can I want them all to live I love them all !!
I'm new to this also, our first year. Move them out when they are fully feathered, and nights are at least 50* from what I've read. We put ours out, with a very very secure heat lamp, when they were about 5.5 weeks old. Turned off the heat lamp last Sunday when the weather really warmed up, but now with the cold front I will turn it back on since the high will only be in the 40s tomorrow and overnight temps in low 30s a few days. Our girls (and one or two boys, dangit!) shouldn't need any type of heat after this spring. I've read many bad stories about heat lamps burning things down. You will find much info here!

Got my first coop built. Hoping to acquire my hens this weekend. They won't be shut up in the run except at night. We have a safe enough plot for them to free range. :)
Nice. and welcome. Still, for free ranging you have to look out for ariel attacks. Last year a red tailed hawk nested and had a baby in our smallish Indianapolis backyard, it was cool then. Now, not so cool and we've seen/heard them around here this spring.
