INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

DH and I took my mother to dinner at our favorite Mexican place last night, She loves it when we take her there, the waiter kept calling her honey.. lol momma don't like it much when KIDS s she says, calls her honey dear or ?? but I had to laugh just couldn't help it, she would tell herself " be good, I got to be good"... lol
Then DH and I went to big lots and walked off the great food both of us ate too much of!!
Then we went home.................. to find baby goats greeting us at the door with the dogs, ( not supposed to be free ranging the house), trash lined the floors from 1 end of the house to the other and 2 bloody heads!! Our GP had got into a fight!!!
Buddy ( the bigger 1 ) got the worst of it, his eye looks real bad ( could be me just being a worry wort ) so I call our vets ER number and get a RECORDING telling us to call this other number to the ER animal clinic in TH!!! WTH!!!! Sooo I call the number and in talking to the woman that answered the phone I got that in this clinic they keep a vet in house until midnight and then the vets got on call.. And it is $90.00 just to walk in the door!!! My vet ER charge is $45.00. I ask who the vet was that was on duty because is was only 9 pm and it is Well I'm not going to name him I don't like him 1 little bit!!! He don't care about the pet he only cares about the money he can get from it!!! They are 2 that are a husband wife team and they both are the same way!!
Anyway I get off the phone and tell DH I will take care of Buddy myself until Monday and then I can take him in to see OUR vet, and you can bet I will let him know I am not happy about being redirected to that slaughter house!!
And what if I had a large animal ER was I just supposed to watch them die? My vet is the only large animal vet in town, the next closest is 40 minutes away in 0 traffic!!
Anyway I cleaned Buddy up the best I could and started him on antibiotics and am keeping my fingers crossed he will not lose the eye.

I spent last night sitting up with my sweet Layla dog as she passed away.

Rest in peace loyal protector.

If anyone here has a dog that needs Proin for incontinence, I have a big bottle of it available that was recently opened. PM if you need it.

So sorry about Layla! I lost my girl last summer, I know your pain.

How many here put hatching eggs into an old egg carton or some kind of tray for hatching? I've been just laying them on their side in the incubator. Considering using an old egg carton this time to cut down on the mess and eggs rolling all over the place.

So, I did some searching yesterday and found a tiny (40mm) fan to install in my Styrofoam cheapo incubator. They had it at Radio Shack in my town (I didn't know the store still existed!) for $14. They are WAY cheaper on Ebay (around $3-4) but I didn't want to wait for it. I found an old charger cord from a spotlight, 120v to 12v, and wired it up. Installed it in the corner blowing across the heating element, ceiling of the bator. For being so small the thing puts off a fair amount of air. I modified (aka: bent) some "eye-screws" to hold the fan and stick into the foam, so it kinda dangles from the lid.

Everything seems great except with my messing with the incubator I got a temp spike. I normally wouldn't try to modify the bator with eggs in there but I had no choice this time. I just had a poor hatch and I feel hot spots in the incubator had something to do with it. I worked fast, took the lid off, ran wire through small existing hole in the lid, hung fan and closed it up. Probably not open more than 6-7 mins tops. I left the temp setting where it was, came back in an hour and my thermometer read 106!

It took me SEVERAL hours but got the temp back down to 99.5-100. Hope I didn't cook them! With the fan in the cheapo incubator it seems to spread the heat much better. I would assume that with the still air concept the air at top around the heating element is very hot and gets cooler as you move down the air column. The eggs normally sat in the 100ish range with no fan, but now that the air is being circulated it's all the same temp. Makes sense looking back, just wish I would have dialed it down some first. This was a major adjustment compared to how much I normally move the knob.

I'll candle the eggs in 4 more days or so, they were only on day 2 when all this went down so hopefully they'll not be ruined.

I'm almost done with my "coolerbator" as well! I have the light and thermostat installed and working. Pretty much everything is ready but I have to order a fan from eBay. Thought I could find an old computer laying around but haven't yet.

I'll try to post some pics once I get a couple more things done with it.

I have I cut the bottom out of them and cut down the sides a bit too. It did stop the rolling around, but what a pain to turn them.

Ds, age 7, asked me how come he didnt see the bunny eggs in there before they hatched hehehe.

Got to brag on Dd a minute. I homeschool her, she is in third grade. Tonight she placed second in our county's Spelling Bee competing against grades 1-5.

Im ordering seeds and meat chicks this week. Is it Spring yet? Lol

As for building, I need to build a rabbitry and 2 more coops/runs pretty quick. I have rabbits combined in cages that shouldnt be. I also want to build another brooder, something that will hold more chicks than my little metal box lol.

@jchny2000- praying for your brother! I hope he recovers soon!

Goodnight all-going to go to bed and dream of digging in my gardens :)

Lol your gremlins crack me up.

And hoping very soon to be building a coop, rabbit cages, and brooder set up at a new place for us too! Someone has to handle your over flow lmao
