INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Assuming this is frostbite....

I know a person from Canada that had one of her birds step into the waterer and the foot froze immediately. She brought the bird into the house for recovery. The only thing she used on the foot was coconut oil. Seriously. Just coconut oil. Coconut oil has anti-fungal and anti-bacterial properties. She kept a close eye on the foot to be sure there was no infection setting in and, since there wasn't, continued to use the coconut oil throughout the dry-up and fall-off.

The bird recovered well, had to learn to walk with the missing toes, but seemed to do quite well.

I hope you get better soon.

I had a great experience with the welp chicks I got.  As for the straight run, it really should be posted as unsexed chicks.  Most people think it means 50%female and 50% male but it is whatever comes out of the eggs.  And if a person is only ordering a few of each breed, then the chance of getting half roos is slim for each breed.  And mathematically even slimmer for the entire group as a whole.  The odds of getting half roos and half hens are better for large batches of one breed.  It has to do with the law of large numbers.
In other words, your sample size was too small.   An order of 25 is not significantly large enough to expect half roosters.

I actually expected 5-6 but they garrenteed 1/4 and delivered 0 so even though I would of understood with the smaller orders to deliver 0 and charge more because males cost more is upsetting I ordered 50 total

Also that is sad news about the members husband I can't even begin to know how you feel or what to do to help but we are here for you to talk to I know what it's like to have lost my best friend and if it's anything like that I greatly feel for you

I'll try to keep the math simple here. It can get complex.
But an order of 50 is not the sample size when that order includes various breeds. Instead that order is a bunch of smaller samples ADDED together but all independent of each other. It is that independence of each group that makes a low or high number of roos for the combined order still statistically irrelevant. Meaning it was within the range of mathematically expected results for a luck of the draw from a 50/50 split pool.
For example lets say you ordered 10 breeds, 5 chickens of each breed, all straight run. Then you have 10 tiny orders of 5.
Statistically a group of 5 is not large enough to expect half and half. A group of 5 is not large enough to statistically draw any kind of conclusion about the group of chicks they came from, as much as we would like too.

FYI...here's a recipe for a frostbite ointment that also contains some items that help with pain relief, inflammation, etc....if you have the time to make it!

The coconut oil is a lot simpler if you don't have time.

Homemade Frostbite Ointment

This all-natural ointment can be used to prevent and treat frostbite.

Ingredients
2 ounces beeswax
3/4 cup coconut oil
1/4 teaspoon liquid vitamin E (helps repair damaged skin)
10 drops calendula essential oil (anti-inflamatory, aids in healing wounds)
10 drops lavender essential oil (relaxant, pain reliever, antibacterial, anti-fungal)
10 drops lemon essential oil (antibacterial, antiviral)

To Make
Grate beeswax and melt with coconut oil over low heat in a glass mason jar set in a saucepan of boiling water, stirring with a wooden chopstick. Remove from heat and stir in the Vitamin E and essential oils until well mixed. Leave in the mason jar or pour into a covered container and cool. Store in a cool, dry place and use as needed.

What a fantastic recipe! Thank you so much! I'm out if calendula but it gave several friends close by who probably have some. I love the Mason jar idea too. And i have little beeswax pearls so no need to grate. Thanks!

When I took a quick look at your photo before logging off, my eyes fixated on the swollen area and completely missed the black toe!

It's easier to tell someone else not to beat yourself up, but I have been doing the same thing for the past month. Just like your comment: "I feel like something is not quite right" or how I've chastised myself, "Why didn't you notice that?!" The irony is that in these situations, we feel inept because we are conscientious animal owners.

Since Olaf had five toes to begin with, he has spares.

Here's the pain reliever info if you or anyone else is interested.

Wanted to let everyone know thats not on our Facebook BYC page. Many of us have met her personally and spoken with @minmin1258 . Cindy Is one of our honorary hoosiers, drove all the way from WV to attend out chickenfest in Liberty. Cindy jumped right in and helped us put out a huge feast! Her dog pal rode all the way out with her. I am saddened to report her husband lost his battle with cancer. Please, keep her in your thoughts.
Thank you for letting us know about minmin.

@Leahs Mom Your recipe sounds great—for people, too! I always use coconut oil as moisturizer following a shower. It's interesting that it doesn't have a "coconutty" smell (luckily—not ready for the beach!)
