My li'l call duck, Crashie, laid her first egg today!! I just went up to go to bed and found it in her pen with her! Soft shelled, just like her mother's first egg! I guess Crash needs oyster shell in her diet now, too! :D Can't believe my li'l ducky is already laying!!

Oops.   I thought for sure they were all duck eggs.  Since it hatched yellow, If it was a white or off white egg, the hen was probably a California white (most likely) or a silver leghorn. If it was a light brown egg, the hen was a Bresse.  Roo possibilities are Bresse, Mottled Java, Cream Legbar, or Dark Cornish (not likely, the other roos don't let him near).  No matter the father, chick will most likely be white with a few off colored feathers.  Bresse would be all white, Legbar would have a small crest.  It will be interesting to see what it looks like as it develops.  If it has a crest, and if its a hen, it will lay green/blue eggs.  Otherwise most likely light brown as I don't have any white egg roos.

NP
I would say more of a light brown.
Very light brown, not necessarily off white but yeah, it is all yellow for now.

It's so calm and sweet. No crest.

Good morning everyone

chicks are in at big R in Warsaw. Came home with: Ameraucana, light brahma, black australorp, buff orpington, barred rock and an Isa brown. Hoping the kids will be happy with my picks when they get home. My oldest really wants a silkie again. Big R won't have bantams in the bins, they said they will only special order them 25 minimum. So, if anyone knows someone not too far away that has or will have silkie chicks let me know!
Haven't been to the feed store lately, nephew does all the feed runs now. I got the Chick Days email from TSC, and DH said he heard peeps at Rural king but didn't go look! Shane on him!

No worries, didn't mean any offense to either of you, that's just one of my 'chicken causes' and I always feel the need to reply when I see it posted.

Even if everyone involved knew the difference, perhaps a reader doesn't, so I like to make sure.

I am glad to hear that Big R may have them labeled correctly, though!

Looks like I was duped on the AMs again too. 2 are laying olive drab eggs. Pretty but obviously not true AMs.

Quote: I had a lot of BYM chicks last season, the ducks would let chickens lay in the nest. I would walk out in the morning and hear cheeping! Found one little guy running around by the barn! I have gotten a lot more diligent checking the duck nests.

Wow thats so big for such a little duck! Double yolker maybe? Congrats on her first egg!

1st test hatch, 2 of 2! I have a chocolate orp chick, and an "Ameruacana" lol.. am going to rethink my EE rooster plans. The lavender fella is just stunning, so he may get to have my entire EE flock. He is on the small size so am still undecided. My EEs run big, and I hate to compromise the size. I may just give him a few and start a new pen.
Have almost a tray full coming up on the next hatch, Sumatra, chocolate orps, Lavender orps and the supposed AMs. Have to say the Sumatra lay really well, one of few breeds that laid all winter. They are a smaller frame for the hens, but lay a nice large egg. Less feed use for them too, I will probably keep them a long time. They lay as well as my leghorns.

@chickrookie I second this wholeheartedly. Do it. Spare yourself that nasty neighbors. Keep as man roos as you want. Get space and remember how to breathe.
DH decided we can move!!!!!!! So the 12th we will be packing up and moving on out

Our rural king in kendalville is disgusting. And full of lazy people. I hate more than anything to see chicks with pasty butt. Out of all their chicks I would say a good 65% had quite a bit of buildup. I asked if anyone was in charge of taking care of the chicks. NO ONE knew what the heck was going on. I ended up taking one chick to the bathroom because he was trying so hard to poop. It broke my heart. But as soon as I got his butt cleaned he pooped a massive poop. Poor guy. Last year I saw the same thing with this specific store. They shouldn't be able to sell chicks.

that is so very sad... I would be throwing a king sized fit!!!!!!

Hehehe Ihad a few minutes to kill before picking youngest son up from school. I just happened to have heard that rural King was expecting chicks this morning, and I just happened to be driving by there, and these guys just happened to come home with me

It's funny how that " just happens " ... lol So far I have been good and stayed out of the farm/feed stores!!!!

ok time for one of my dumb questions... lol
Can you eat those soft eggs??? I always throw them away.

@jchny2000

Do you have blue sumatras?

Yes. She has black, blue and splash, but as there are only a blue and splash roo in the pen, there are going to be a lot of blues hatching. Not to brag or anything, but my Mr. July might be the finest one from last year (he's black though).
