INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Had ballgames today and came home to a hatched muscovy! So happy to see that! All i can see is its mostly yellow so im sure its rippled but can't wait to see of what color!

I honestly never thought I'd be excited to not know!

Got distracted and never sent the above post from Saturday but had 1 other muscovy duckling hatch only it is a solid dark color and so are its legs! Cute little thing. As of this morning I have 1 other externally pipped now.
The little dark one should be the "atipico" coloring.

Here is Sweet Pea:

Precious!
Have some leftover fishing bait. Live wax worms and redworms. We've had our chicks for 3 weeks now, so I'm guessing they're close to 4 weeks old. Is there any reason I shouldn't give each of the chicks one as a treat?
Wax worms are fine, not sure on the redworms, have not been able to find info on that. Night crawlers are ok too.

@jchny2000 i put the poults in the GQF brooder with the 30+ chicks that were already in there. The last 2 are still alive and seem fine. The 2 left is 1 of the all yellow with dark back stripe (sweetgrass?) and the lighter marked one, i have no clue what it may be?

I read that the recent duckling hatch may be the atipico (sp?) I still need to look up what that adult plumage looks like.

Love the March hatches colors! The drake is super sweet and 1 of the girls. Lol...the rest are scared to death of me! Haha!

Took pics of them enjoying their daily play pen!

I added a couple khakis when the Muscovy were just hatched in hopes for some good egg layers. Just hope they are ducks and not drakes.

So adorable! @kabhyper1 has khakis she may be able to help you determine what they are. I had our very first Buff American hatch last night, and Snow Mallard! Trying to get pictures to upload, ugh.

I've had the khaki before but was a drake you took home. I haven't spent a lot of individual time with them but noticed one quacking today which indicates a duck. So fingers crossed!

Very awesome to hear about your hatches! So happy for you!

Well I will start with the good stuff first...

The above is some very good stuff!

I wish you were closer b/c I've been trying to buy Blk Australorps but Farm & Fleet, Rural King, and Big R don't have them. I even tried to order them via Farm & Fleet & they had to cancel my order due to supply issues from the hatchery. When I ask the managers if they plan on getting any, the answer is always that they only order the popular breeds like Barred Rocks, Leghorns, and RIR. (I think if people knew how well they laid, they'd be more popular.) Anyway, that's one more reason why I'd love to move out of the Chicago suburbs.

Now for the BAD stuff.... Last Saturday we went down to the new place to start the clean up before the move in and found someone had went in and destroyed the house and done a good bit of damage to the garage!!!

Now that I have got all that off my chest I have to get to trimming goat feet got allot to do so need to get at it but I'm so dang depressed it is taking an army to get me off my butt!!!.

I can't believe the horrible luck. When it rains it pours! I'm sure you'll be able to recover some of the losses with legal help, but yes, it totally stinks! Also, payments often come in the future, so getting through the NOW will be rough. The bright side:...... your DH, your family, your friends. Although the idiot who directly caused the stress & financial burden will be no help, there are many loving people who will help when you need it most. Not everyone knows what you need, so don't be afraid to ask others to help lighten your load. A year ago when my mom died, I had to reduce my number of chickens because my energy was needed in other areas of life. Neighbors & friends, took care of our meals & babysat the kids so I could be at the hospital, then funeral home. Total strangers online, reached out & gave comfort - or at least let me vent my emotions. Through life's ups & downs, there's no easy way or shortcuts. But you'll get through these difficult & draining days and find happiness again.

Well I will start with the good stuff first... DH went to the Auction ( beef is going from 2 50 to 3 16 a lb , bottle calves were from 100 to 186 depending on age and breed ) and he calls me on his way home to tell me he got hay and had to pay out the butt to get it!!! And that's ALL we talked about. He didn't say nothing about nothing else. He got home and I was at the back of the truck looking at the hay and he walked around with a 3 - 5 day old LaMancha Billy!!! I was so happy. I have been looking for one for awhile, I lost my other one last year and jut haven't found one that I was happy with, but this guy is Awesome!!!! So we had to make a trip to TSC and get him some milk... Nothing doing DH just HAD to go check out the chicks!!!!! The Manager was saying that Friday they were going to have everyone on sale and he didn't care if they went buy 1 get 10 free... lol Well DH spoke up and said that was just great cause he had to work Friday and by the time he got off they would be gone.... the whole time I'm standing giving him the evil eye!!! I DON'T WANT TO MOVE CHICKS!!!!! So DH is talking deals... I hear the MG say 11 or 10.00... I had to speak up... that aint a deal... 11 for 5.00 would be a deal... thinking NO WAY he is going to go for that..... he DID!!!!! So now we have 11 BA chicks!!!! So much for me not wanting to move chicks... and my getting down to nothing but HERITAGE breed birds is now shot!! ( I was almost there too ) I don't have any brooders out they are all stored away in the garage at the new house!! So now I got to dig one out down there and bring it here. Now for the BAD stuff.... Last Saturday we went down to the new place to start the clean up before the move in and found someone had went in and destroyed the house and done a good bit of damage to the garage!!! I'm talking busted windows and doors, the dry wall was removed from some of the walls, the ceiling fans were taken out and bear wires left. Looks like they took a hammer and knocked holes in the walls and ripped up most of the flooring, dumped out trash bags of trash all over the place and even left a Pee jug in the middle of the dinning room floor!!!! Yes it was a pee jug and it was full!!!! They stole the furnace and the central air unit!! And ripped out allot of the wiring. I am so upset, it took me this long just to be able to talk about it without crying. The x-renter did it all and was stupid enough to show up while the cops were there doing a report on it all, AND admitted doing it, just came out and said " I did it so what the ---- are you going to do about it?" The officer said " I'll show ya "" and put him under arrest!!! but before he could get the cuffs on him he took a swing at the guy we bought it off of. So he also has an assault charge against him. So now all the money we were going to put towards fencing and critter housing... all has to go to the house so it will be livable. and we are looking at paying rent here and a house pymt for even longer!!! Just have no ideal how we are going to do all this!! Still cant believe that guy did all that!! Now that I have got all that off my chest I have to get to trimming goat feet got allot to do so need to get at it but I'm so dang depressed it is taking an army to get me off my butt!!!.
I hate this for you. I'd love to think there'd be some restitution you could get out of that slug, but from the sounds of it he doesn't have much to give. And insurance does everything it can to not pay. I hope it sorts out in your favor and quickly. And that the slug gets a particularly nasty virus in a delicate location.

@Faraday40 I got Australorps at TSC in Danville last week. It's definitely a bit of a drive for you, but if you can't find them anywhere else, it may be worth it to call and see if they will get more.

@chick rookie

Will insurance pay for any of this? Surely vandalism would be covered? That is devastating!

Everyone and everything is being so slow!! The seller has a double wide or what ever you call them and is willing to split the cost of tear down and set up if we want to do that. We are doing the pro's and con's thing. Does anyone know anything about the maintenance on those? No matter what way we o it is going to take forever. I don't think the seller had insurance?? Just by the way he is talking he wont give us a straight answer when asked. And we were to sign papers and such the day we took possession so we hadn't put insurance on it as of yet.

I'm so sorry, @chickrookie ! The seller may be able to help, but you'll probably have to go through home owner's insurance, and maybe sue the the jerk. A professional will have to get involved to assess the damage, then you'll have to figure how to get his car and other assets. Shame he can't be thrown in a debtor's prison

Congrats on your new birds and billy! BA are a heritage breed, even if they are hatchery stock. I've had three RK BAs and all are good layers (though one's been repeatedly broody).
It has been assessed at 28000.00 to replace and repair.
thanks, I know they are a heritage breed but I was trying to get away from hatchery stock, not had much luck with them of late and wanted a stronger and healthier flock. I love BA have tried to always keep at least 3 around. and some of the ones I have had in the past have gone broody, but that don't bug me at all, I like broody hens, except in the winter!! lol that is a pain.
How have you been doing, haven't heard in awhile or I just missed it...
@chick rookie If the house was insured, that should all be covered. So sorry you are going through that.
Thanks, read above post about Insurance, we just don't know??? Which is the biggest problem, the not knowing.

Hi all! Sorry to just drop in like this. I'm ISO a couple few week old bantam chicks.

I have a lone Belgium Quail, about 3 weeks old who needs friends! (See pics below and feel free to let me know if I'm off in the breed! Hmm having trouble loading pic...)

Friday our neighbor came over with 3 extra 3 day old chicks he didn't want. He also had this little gem, and doesn't have any other bantams so he gave her to us too.

My co-broodies were fine with all 4 chicks for 48 hours and then BAM they regected Sweet Pea and were attacking her. She(?) really is too little to hold her own with the other bantams so she is in a see thru container in our large wooden brooder. So the broodies and their babes can see but not touch.

So anyone in Indy have any friends for Sweet Pea? If so Plz PM me.

As usual, wish I could be on here more. I've been pretty sick since Xmas. I have some health problems and pretty much ran myself into the ground. I think we finally have figured out the main problem and I'm getting better without relapses this time I hope and pray!

For those of you who are prayers: a dear friends 12 year old daughter is missing. I can't share more than that but we need as many people praying as possible!
Wish I could help ya out some, do you guys still come to Terre Haute any? If you do I have 11 new BA's I'm sure DH wont kill me if a few come up missing.... lol they have good wing feathers so don't really know how old they are 2-3 weeks maybe?

Wow that's just wow some people really don't think things through trying to get at the guy who through him out ends up only hurting a complete stranger I'd probably ask to lower the price more lol
Trust me you wouldn't believe the talks on how to fix our problem, all 3 of us have been brain storming and a few things are being thought about hard... most people don't care and I'm used to that, what throws me for a loop is that this guy #1 actually shows up, #2 thinks it was HIS house and he did nothing wrong, he even said " I pay rent, that makes it mine and you can't tell me what I can and can't do with it", can you believe that????
But it was pointed out that even if that were true... he hadn't paid his rent in 6 mths!! I could go on forever about the stupid ---- this guy spouted off about, but I'm calm now and I want to stay that way... lol

The kennel runs : four 10'×15'. 6' tall fences + 2' taller center of the fencing on top of concrete blocks.
an8'×10' run behind wooden coop next to pole barn. Eventually will have 10x10 or 15x10 run on side of wooden coop

I wish I could come up with panels like you did, they are awesome!! for goats too!! Your kids will have a great place, love it.

The little dark one should be the "atipico" coloring.

Precious!
Wax worms are fine, not sure on the redworms, have not been able to find info on that. Night crawlers are ok too.
red worms are fine they are the same thing you find in the yard and just tiny when next to a night-crawler... my broody raised chicks eat them all the time.

If the choice is between a double wide and a traditional built home, personally, i'm taking the traditional built every time. Double wides aren't all bad, and they are affordable, but your are really limited as to what options you have if you try to change anything in them. Often the plumbing is knock-off pex style stuff that can be a nightmare, and the insulation is notoriously dubious. Before we bought our place we looked at several, and they are fine, but in the end I just couldn't do it. I'll take the headaches that come from a 100 year old farmhouse before a double wide. Better "bones" IMO.
