INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

@indyshent sorry about the hawk problem. I saw one swoop down and grab a 5- 6 foot stick and carry it away this morning. Must have been building a castle up in the trees nearby :( I put my bantam cochin in with the 7 week old pullets so she wouldn't get carried off. The older 4 LF hens spent the day like open ground was hot lava.... don't know if a hawk would go after a bigger hen.
@Mother2Hens - sorry you aren't feeling well :( get lots of rest and drink a lot.

Hi everyone. I've been very sick in bed with pneumonia, so I will be checking back when I feel better.
Aw, feel better.

Healing vibes to you.

So my incubators are still half driving me crazy, but with my constant monitoring I've been able to keep it between 98.5 and 100.5 almost all the time. I had one brief jump up to 102. I am trying not to open them much except to add water. Of the 72 I had set, I have pitched about 10 total (clears or blood rings) and replaced them, so there will be a few stragglers hatching a week or two after the main hatch.

I just nope none hatch while DH and I are away for a short getaway this weekend. As long as they don't hatch more than half a day early, everything should be fine. I may even ask my ex-H, who is critter/fowl sitting for us, to just stay at my house so he can keep an eye on the incubators. I'm putting them all into lockdown a day early (unless someone thinks I shouldn't). Heck, I have had some lavs hatch on Day 19 before I even started lockdown, but not this year.

Keep your wings crossed for all my little birdy fetuses! My best wishes to all of you who are incubating eggs now, too!!

P.S. There is a big controversy among Zionsvillians on Nextdoor.com about roosters in residential (though RURAL residential) areas. Some guy is peeved that his neighbor has 2 roos (LOLOL, just 2 roos!!!), even though the roos were there before Mr. Pain in the Backside moved in. People don't understand chickens if they don't have them. They think somehow crowing can be controlled. One woman (a woman!!!) suggested using a rifle. I reported her for saying that, even if she was kidding. The area in question is perfectly legal to have chickens, including roosters, without any limits. That's the beauty of living in Zionsville's rural district. If they ever try to scoop us into the urban district, we'd have to move or fight it, and our neighborhood has fought and won similar battles before. We like being close to town, but not TOWN.

Guys- I did a bad thing :). Had a chick hatch this week with wry neck, no vitamin e on hand and DH took a liking to this particular chick, so off to RK we headed. But DH had to go to Bloomington anyway, so I rode along instead of wasting gas in my car going to the Bedford store (see how frugal I was trying to be there?). Omgosh. The Bloomington store has soooo many more chicks, ducks, and turkeys than Bedford! They have a whole row of discounted bins! $1 pullets! $5 poults! I didn't catch the price on the ducklings lol. Sooo....I came home with 6 more BBW poults :). So much for being frugal lol. I'm up to 9 poults, plus hoping to get 5 midget whites soon. They had other breeds there, I just don't have room for anymore lol.

I saw a couple posts up someone talking about neighbor complaints and zoning. I'm fighting zoning in Lawrence county too. A few of the candidates for county commissioner want to enact zoning in the rural county areas outlawing any farm animals if you have less than 10 Acres. They also want to make it to where you have to get permission from your neighbors before you build any structure or even put in a garden! One of my neighbors came over this week and told my husband he is concerned about my farm because he's "not putting up with smells all summer". Grrrr. Last summer I had two pigs and no one even knew it! I don't even have them now, but thinking it's time to get some while it's still legal hehe.

This is infuriating. I'd be on someone's porch every day shouting this nonsense down. Good lord. STATE STATE STATE

Politicians are termites. ARGH.

I agree :). It seems most in our county oppose it, but whether those people actually turn out to vote for the candidates that oppose it is another matter. Two of my neighbors support it, probably because of me. I have 2 roosters. That is just intolerable in the country, where all the houses were built in the 70's and every lot is 1/2 acre or more. I've even been told my "farm" is driving their property values down. Grrr. I could rant for hours about these people, they are ttrying to run us out of our house. Oh well. I'll shut up now lol. Just wanted to illustrate to everyone how important it is to pay attention to local politics. They strip us of more rights every election.
