INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Tomorrow morning, fanny and fancy are going to the bull! Both girls are showing definite signs, so we have a short window for breeding! DH is off due to a rain day, so it will be an early morning trip. Very excited to see this day come.
Setting my first round of RIR, they have been confined a month now. My rooster is heritage, the hens are likely more hatchery. Each girl is from a different home. I know they are a common bird but sure are a hardy breed, and a great year around layer. We will move the leghorn into a breeding coop next and hatch in a month.
The little Buckeyes are just super social. Will have to get some pictures soon!

Busy! Congrats on the hatches.
I have to keep spreadsheets on everything.. I set once a week, and then write it down, put it on the spreadsheet. The quail I have to account for the weird incubation period, so I set them 3 days ahead of the other birds hatching.

Sooo everyone, to help out newer folks thats joined our thread, whats your favorite chicken breed? Least favorite? Best roosters, and hens? Please share your thoughts, pictures and opinions. Who is your best layers, and if you keep them for a table bird what breed has worked best?

My bad rooster experiences have been Australorps and Wyandottes. I will point out though that they were all hatchery lines and not from a breeder. Hens were also top in the flock and dominant.
All the breeds I currently keep are great, adore the Orpington most. Followed by EE/OE, Sumatra, Ameruacana, Naked Necks, RIR and WL.
Egg layers, Leghorn and comets lay daily and give us a lot of eggs.
Table birds, most of my breeds have excellent size aside from leghorn. If we have to purchase birds meant for the freezer Cornish Cross are huge at 8 weeks, and that's the hybrid we get.

I'm glad you posted this. I look forward to seeing responses. I am only 2 months in on my chicken keeping, but have noticed different personalities in my flock. Mainly, that the BR are the top dogs. They are not mean to the other birds, but the others just keep away from them. Also, when I take the top off the brooder, all 10 BR come out and play on top (and jump on my shoulders), while the others all stay inside. I assume it's a pecking order thing. I just thought it odd that it was all 10 of the same breed. I've even grabbed the Orps and the EE to give extra attention so they feel comfortable coming out....but they just go back in. I'm anxious to see how the dynamics change when they go to the coop today. I am sooooo excited. It didn't happen last weekend, bc we didn't get it finished.

I also have a BA cockerel that I can't stand. Mean, mean, mean. I'm hoping next time we buy any chicks to not have to buy hatchery. I never realized the difference until joining here.

Here is the inside of the coop. It looks small but it's 10x12. I only took a pic of this side. The opposite wall will have the nest boxes, when they get built. East window slides open, west window pops up. 30 feet of roost space, hopefully enough?
