INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

I have to limit how much corn I let my parents eat, its terrible for diabetes. Sounds like a busy spring already for you!
Just curious. Recently I was asked for some hatching eggs. My rooster is a fine looking buff orpington and his hens are buff orpingtons and barred rocks. She asked me what the charge was and I had no idea what the value would be. Can anyone give me a suggested charge. ? Thanks

I usually ask $1 each for hatching eggs, unless its a rare breed.

Hi, I have a little problem. I used a little giant incubator, and only one baby hatched. She is a very loud little peeper. My husband said she is lost because she is alone. Does anyone have any 1-5 day old chicks they are willing to sell? I live on the west side of Indianapolis, but will travel if need be. Please and thank you so much.
I know many folks are still hatching chickens right now, and Rural King should still have chicks also.

Had a neighbor stop in for 7 goslings today, and in return did the repairs on the 2 damaged coops. Discussed tearing down my old coops for some piglets and adult laying hens. I am hatching chickens and mallard ducks for him also, and in return, he is putting our electric fencing in for the pasture. I LOVE to barter and help out another family too! He is especially impressed with the size of the Lavender Orps. My backup LO rooster is his favorite guy here, runs right up to his truck when he pulls in. I am sure the leftover french fries may be helping that!

Fanny my cow should be home in about 10 days, YAY! Really missing her. She will love the pasture once she comes home. With her gone, there's a lot of good orchard grass, several other yummy plants coming up. I can visit every day. The bull doesn't appreciate me at his fence so often. He does seem to like the carrots I bring, so we have come to an agreement at least. Fanny is staying with the other adult cows and their calves part of the day, and spends the evenings with the bull along with the rest of the herd. I will really need to add bottle calves soon. She is enjoying the company of other cows, especially the calves.

Sugar my goat doe has not kidded yet, but expect in the next week or so. Udders are filling up and she is a walking ball with legs, ROFL! Her tummy is sooo round, hoping for twins again. She is really loving tummy rubs and back rubs.

Rural Kings and Tractor Supply stores should have them. Not sure how far you're willing to drive, but I know there's a person in Avon and another in Groveland that always seem to have chicks. check around on Craigslist, too. All of my bitties are older than yours, though my new poults and all the broody-hatched babies all tolerate company.

All but maybe one of the broody hatches this year are roosters (or dead). Blargh. Well, at least I'll have ample back-ups and maybe some fryers otherwise. One looks to be full Brahma, three look like Cochins or Cochin/Brahmas, and one's red.

@jchny2000 , sending happy baby vibes!

@Indyshent one of my bourbon hens went broody, its Syd my social girl. The older hen is timid. None of my turkey eggs have been fertile so far this year. We are still at -0- hatch. The 2 holland that hatched didn't thrive. I set every egg I get.. I think my fella is getting too old.

Ok. Thanks for the suggestion for hatching egg price.
Hopefully in a few days the first batch will go to camp. Yea! 11 down and then about 4 more weeks for my bitties, then sept for my hatchlings. I may keep a couple. I ll decide when the time comes. I haven't named any and that's prob a good thing.

I had terrible luck this year too. Set 20 eggs, only 10 were fertile, only two hatched and one of them failed to thrive. Ended up with one lonely poult. I usually have no problem with them, and my other eggs have hatched very well this year. Just had a 90% hatch with Bresse chicks and had a 100% hatch of cornish earlier this year. Thinking of possibly processing them all this year and starting over with new turkey stock next year. It certainly wouldn't hurt to not have to feed turkeys all winter.

I'm also very excited. My two peahens hatched out their eggs. The first has one peachick running around with her. The other hatched 4, and one of them looks to be a white! Both parents are normal blues, but there was at least one white hen in the group they were rescued from. Also had one of my muscovies hatch out 4 babies. Still waiting to see what happens with the others.

In the 'Makes you wonder' department:

I got all excited. New Breeds! lol. btw - the light buff brahmas were so light, they looked exactly like light brahmas.....

On a different note ..... My hatchlings (raised by momma) attack anything I pitch into the run. The farm store chix are terrified of everything. Very cautious. Took them awhile to check out the watermelon rind, so long I didn't think they would get any. I put theirs inside with them and still they held back. The chickens outside devoured theirs and came in looking for more.
