Does anyone have an idea what this little chick in the front is? She was in a box marked mixed reds at the farm store. Those in the pix all have the same birthday, but what a diff in sizes

Not an expert but your others are probably production RIR from a hatchery & the one in front may be another type of RIR hybrid. There are many hybrids with names like Isa-brown, Cinnamon Queen, Cherry-egger, Red sex link, etc. They're usually bred for high egg production.

Yeah, looks exactly like the isa-brown we gave to my dad. About the same age too. She was a friendly little thing too.
No heat losses here yet. They look at me like I'm crazy when I put all the ice in with them. Too bad this heat hasn't killed the mosquitos!

i'm wanting to buy electric fencing from premier 1 supplies but I was wondering if any of the good people on here know if and when premier 1 ever run sales on their electric fencing? as i'd like to save some money on an expensive purchase. I should explain i'm wanting it to fence my garden to keep out the bunnies as they have eaten lots of my greens, it more like i can list what they haven't eaten then what they've eaten lol.

Winter months have good sales also, but several good points posted already.
Quote: I use swat for my donkey, for some reason flies terrorize her legs. We bought wraps for her tonight, but I wont use them in this heat. swat stays on very well, and will last a couple days. When I check her hooves, I reapply it to her legs. I use the salve type in a cup type container.

Rhode Island Reds and Golden Comets.. AKA sexlink, cinnamon queen.. The Reds have a darker tail and feathers. Comets usually have some white in the tail. Comets are great layers of XL eggs, but usually have laying issues after a few years.

Peafowl owners, my peacock dropped his train this week. Literally within a couple days! Does that mean breeding season is over? My peahen nested 3 eggs but abandoned it after July 4th weekend. She is also molting, even the crest feathers are gone.
Heat index is pretty awful next few days. Be sure to watch out for yourself outside too!
Just came in from checking coops and we found yet another tiny kitten dumped. It came right to DH, and he said it was in the grass by the roadway. Little black tuxedo cat, I didn't even look to see if boy or girl yet. Its got very messy looking eyes. very thin and wolfed food down like crazy. @kittydoc or anyone, any suggestions on how I can help this poor thing? I have the eye ointment in a small tube, but want to make sure I treat the problem right away. Adult cats are one thing, but kittens just rip my heart out. How can anyone be so cruel to just throw them out by the road? its just a sick mind to do such a thing! These are babies turning up here, this one is barely 6 weeks at most. How can anyone think they will survive alone at that age. Its just heartbreaking.

Please, tell everyone you know to neuter or spay your pets, so it doesn't become someone's problem, or heart ache later. the 2 we found are lucky, sick but we will help them. There are several abandoned cats here each year I don't find until its way too late.

I am proud to announce four new additions to my flock! I had planned to get two, but you know how that goes! Chicken Math got me confused. DH and I finally met @kittydoc today, which was a pleasure even though the heat and humidity wasn't! kittydoc originally tempted me with a Bielefelder, but of course I couldn't just quarantine one, so she mentioned her English/American Orpingtons from her breeding program that she and @jchny2000 have been collaborating on for a year or so (I think). I was thrilled to add a lavender one! Then kittydoc mentioned having a chocolate cuckoo, and I've been wanting a cuckoo anything for a long time because I love the barred pattern. Since three is an odd number, I thought I'd just round off to four to make it even. A solid chocolate completed my set! The Biele is the youngest—approx. 3 weeks, and the Lavender and Chocolate are approx. 5-6 weeks and the Cuckoo is approx. 10-12 weeks old. Thank you for helping to build my new flock with exceptional chickens, kittydoc! They are getting along nicely and quickly warmed up to me when I got them settled in their bedroom suite. lol Well, they warmed up to me because I offered them a few freeze-dried mealworms! I'll have to order some live ones.

Here they are on the drive home. They really attacked the watermelon after a brief stop at RK in Bloomington to get chick starter, which I sprinkled over the watermelon. DD at IU stopped by for a quick peek at the chicks.

Btw, Rural King in Bloomington has a wide variety of chicks for anyone interested. I hurried by two colors of Polish, Dominique, Barred Rocks, isa Browns, Buff Orpingtons, and many more including @pipdzipdnreadytogo 's favorite misnamed breed:

I'm anxiously awaiting news from @ellymayRans about the Bantam Cochin eggs she is hatching and brooding for me! I feel like I'm waiting for her to give birth—LOL! It will be fun to have special little beautiful bantams to quarantine after my four big girls are ready to integrate with my three outside.

Remember our Dominique, Bubbles the Amazing Psychic Chicken?

and her sidekick Trouble, the Sebright?

Well, here's my daughter's video report describing how she trains chickens:

I'm looking forward to catching up on the posts I've missed this past week! I better get to bed so I can play with my new babies in the morning!

Usually eye infections in young kittens are viral, often caused by a herpes virus, but these can become secondarily infected with bacteria. I would try to keep the eye clean, use a small amount of ointment 2-3X daily (what's the name, jchny2000?), and pick up some OTC dewormer for roundworms at least (pyrantel is my preference). Also once it's stabilized and picking up weight, vaccinate it (3 or 4 way vaccine for cats/kittens) every 3 weeks. They usually get exposed to the herpes virus that causes conjunctivitis and/or respiratory illness before anyone gets them vaccinated, so this is very common. The extreme thinness is likely due to worms. If the pyrantel doesn't bring about improvement pretty quick, it might be just old enough to have tapeworms, so check its stool for visible worms or worm segments.

I once saved a kitten that was literally a giant tapeworm in a kitten suit. It passed half its body weight in tapeworms and took weeks to fully recover, but recover it did! I was afraid to deworm it for tapes because it was technically way too young and thin, but it was going to die if I didn't try, so I made up a rational sounding dose and it worked. It was found by an employee along a roadside, so there was no concern about an owner if it hadn't survived the treatment. One of the staff ultimately took it home after it finally got over all the stuff wrong with it! He was such a trooper. We were constantly poking, prodding, pilling, cleaning, etc., and he never turned nasty from all that clinical stuff. I think he knew he was loved and that we were all trying to help.

Speaking of the heat, we lost one of our oldest birds, an Australorp hen (6+ years old), today. Don't know if it was heat-related since she passed in the coop in the shade, but I'm sure it didn't help any. We hadn't noticed any acting sick, though I'm keeping my eye on one of my remaining two Jubilee Orp hens whose comb and wattles are paler than I'd like them to be, but she doesn't act sick. My really heavy English blue Orp roo suffers in less heat than this. I keep expecting to find him expired every time it gets up to 90. He stays outside in the sun if just one hen is in the yard, even if he's panting. I think I'm going to fish the fan out of the attic and put it somewhere in the complex where most of the birds can catch a little breeze at least. If I can find room in the freezer somewhere, I need to make some more ice bottles to cool down their water some more. It's all shaded, too, but still...chickens appreciate a cold drink, too!

Someone dropped a kitten off at the end of our driveway 2 days ago.... we live on a U.S. highway. It didn't have a chance, it probably got scared and ran the wrong way. Thanks people, my kids get to see a decapitated kitten everytime we leave or come home. They probably saw we had kids and animals, and figured it would be a good home. We would have gladly taken it, if it hadn't gotten hit. :(

My male lost his train already as well, probably not in a matter of 3 days but a few weeks now. They say they aren't fertile anymore once that happens. I've never seen them attempt to mate after either. I've never seen them molt their crest at least not completely where it was noticeable. I've only seen it disappear because it was being plucked out. Sorry you didn't get any chicks from them this year.

My very last egg I set expired which stunk because I was super pumped to have a 100% hatch rate with all of her eggs this year! It was my fault though, I got 1 right before we left for vaca and it set on my counter for atleast 10 days and I set it after I got home. It developed but not beyond 2 wks.
