INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

My dad when he was small had a 5and a half foot long stick he fought the rooster off with. as long as he wasn't trying to be mean to the bird his parents didn't have a problem with knocking the roo around if he was running up to him for an attach (I'm sure part of it they knew the rooster wouldn't get hurt very bad because my dad would have trouble swinging and hitting the bird with it, it was usually being "fanned" by it and any hits were mostly glancing blows).

Haha, that sounds like many roo stories I have heard. Any time I've said to "non-chicken people" anything about aggression in roosters, they look at me like I'm an idiot. They say, "well how else do you expect a rooster to act?" lol That won't work around here. Any birds that go after people (especially my kids) or are particularly mean to the other birds are not going to be staying long. I would rather end up with 20 birds in the freezer and 10 happy in the coop, before I have a flock of meanies.

The rooster in question gave us a nice meal Thursday night, meat for soup in the freezer and 3 quarts of beautiful stock.

I'm down to 3 roos. Brick, Moose, & good old "Mr Dummy-pants," Their names have become more descriptive than I thought.

Originally Brick got his name for being "dumb as a brick." He was blessed with good looks & not much else. It turns out he's short & kind of block-like as well. You'll see that my Biele pullet is bigger than Brick. Still, this orp boy looks amazing.

We kept 2 orp pullets named Marshmallow & Muppet, so DD wanted to name their brother "Moose" to keep the M-names.
Moose is sooooo leggy & thin - like a young moose. In the last pic it looks like he's doing a flamingo imitation. Do you think he'll fill out? Right now he looks like walking sticks!

And, Here's Mr Dummy. I doubt we'll ever be able to give him up. (Cogburn's son.)

Below is Prince. (The other son of Cogburn) We were able to find him a loving home. He even gets occasional house privileges. The new owners are very happy with him & his gentle temperament toward people & his new hens.

Here he was last summer:

Now I think I know who's the real father of Moose!
That's a beautiful Biele pullet.

Moose definitely has some legs on him lol. The name fits! My Granger is still pretty leggy. I wasn't sure if it was because Blue liked to chase him away from the feeder or if he was just like that. Time will tell. He is starting to look pretty handsome though. His tail is getting really pretty.

@Greenthumb83
Yes. It sounds like you have a good roo.
Here's our Brownie pacing back & forth in the coop when one of his hens started laying.

Here he is in the nest box, showing the hens how it's done.

Well I have busted my behind the past 4 days and finally completed penning all of my birds! When I can afford to I will be building separate pens for the individual types at the least!

I hate it really but these losses had to stop!

An awesome surprise yesterday though!!! A couple of boys walked thru the tree line up my backyard to my back door with a peachick in their hands!!!! OMG I was sooooo ecstatic! It was one of the last 2 to have gone missing.

I'm exhausted though. It's been so hot but I had to do something different.

I did have 1 duck escape mid construction while at football practice but she has a nest somewhere so she was very determined to get back to them.
1 duccle that has eluded me and Mr Pea. He watched from a distance but wasn't fooled by the treats and food offered up at the time of "lock up". Of course I could never keep them out of the garage and now he won't go in there to save his life!!! The khaki Campbell pair I let stay out since I don't want him mating with the scovys. I have a smaller pen I will get them in tomorrow since I will be home.

I haven't taken measurements but it's the length of my garage and side of house. It was a fast use what I had of welded wire and thanks to a fellow BYCer a ton of netting for the top!!
It's not pretty, yet, but it's a work in progress!!

Oh and forgot to mention that I had 3 of my juvies just randomly show up after being gone a few days and I swore my golden cuckoo marans hen was gone but realized this pitiful bird molting was her!! Lol! She was unrecognizable!!

So glad some of your lost birds have been "found" - even if they do look in bad shape.

How do I get my chickens tested for NPIP?
We are moving from Indiana to MN and I need them tested anyone know the cost? I hVe 45 chickens
Hmm, Possibly @kittydoc or a few other members that are certified testers may be able to help.

Just a stunning rooster!

Quote: We had a fella here named Bruce, he was just a total physco. Fine with other roosters. Hated people! He was my 3rd and last attempt at keeping BA roos here. His last day on earth he decided to attack my 82 year old Dad. We had an excellent pot of chicken and dumplings that evening! He spurred dad, and I won't go into the details but that was the end of it for Bruce's attacks.

So many new things going on in the coop these days. My little ones are growing up! We have 6 out of 17 of the pullets laying now. I have been doing some serious nest stalking lol. We have one laying behind the feed bin, so I have to fix that set up a little. One of my BR girls laid her first egg today and I happened to be out there for it. I would not have even noticed her in the corner, had it not been for Granger standing over her. He stood there, almost hiding her, making a soft purring noise. I was really intrigued, so I stayed until she laid. He came out, once the egg was laid, and they both sang the egg song together lol. Is this normal/common for a rooster? I have to assume it's a good thing. It was really sweet to watch.
Yes and that is an awesome rooster! A good roo checks the ladies nests, will often sit with or stand guard while they lay. My old fella EE would examine every hole on our 10 hole nest box, and determine what box was acceptable. He would wait on the perch until she was done and sing his heart out. He also never ate until his ladies were finished.

Congrats! I feel for you, it has been so humid! I know its hard to confine, really upsetting. We are starting to see relief, but have a lot more work ahead of us too. Glad to hear some are showing up and safe also!
