INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Falls here, and I can sure tell it in my chickens. Lots of molting, grumpy birds, few eggs. Starting to plan winterizing now so its done, ugh. Aside from upgrading and moving coops we are looking at whats needed to keep them warm for winter this year, with the newer style coops. Am sure glad I froze eggs this year but they won't  last long.

We had 10 new piglets born the 22nd, can't remember if I posted it yet! Berkshire sow Willow and boar Oreo. Totally honest, was not expecting this farrowing. She showed no sign of being pregnant until Saturday. Saw that her milk was in and belly had dropped! We were sure the last breeding didn't take.. Surprise! All 10 are fat, healthy and crawling all over Willow. This is off season for piglets so they will be available in 3 weeks, very cheap!

If I could hide a pig in the city, I so would!

I just want to give a shout out to @jchny2000 for being patient, kind, helpful, and willing to work with me. I know she's got a busy schedule, but she still gets back to me as soon as she can. I figured she just needed a good public shout out!

Thanks! LOL yes today was crazy. We bush hog the tall grass for hay during the summer. Its been dry enough last few days to cut, and hopefully be dry enough tomorrow to gather. "Make hay while he sun shines" is a real deal, so it doesn't mold!

ROFL!

My favorite little rooster. A real lap fella! Also very lucky that I adore roosters and his breed.

He hops up and sits with me on my arm or leg and snoozes. He is a standard Old English Game, he also has 2 hens. Came here about 2 weeks ago, and are in quarantine. Sick little guy, under weight, and in a hard molt. His comb had no color when they came, nor did the hens. They are on chick feed right now. They are the last birds I tend to daily, so I am taking no chance of exposing my flock to anything.. I have no history on them at all.
A friend had pity on them and bought them. Meant well, but oh my they really need help. I am a huge fan of the game breeds, roosters are always super sweet, social fellas. Saddens me to see them in his condition. They are such a lively spirited breed, always chatty and active. He is regaining color in comb and waddles finally. One of his hens has laid an egg and they are recovering too. The hens are so fearful its going to take a while to win them over. Aside from 24% chick starter am giving them raw liver chunks (have tons of it) and my little trio is really rebounding.

Oh I know! My aunt and uncle are on their third cutting. They do small fields. Only a couple acres. They are where I get my hay ( blood loyalty ) lmao

I
Would be happy with half the acreage you've got. What do you do? My
Aunt and uncle (Hunt Creek Farms for you Hendricks county folk) do one field of bedding and one of feed. I use the feed for my buns. Clover/ alfalfa/ orchard grass/ Timothy mixture.

Quote: We have a nice orchard grass mix, some white clover. We use about 3 acres for hay currently, hoping another 2 acres will be pasture by next year. Prior owners kept horses, so its got a great pasture grass setting already. We have goats, cows, pigs and a mini donkey. Plan to add more minis! I adore my donkey, sweetest soul ever. She chases off the owls and fox, but needs help. The grasses are perfect for what we keep now. Goas take care of any weed type plants.

If you pair her with a donkey or another donkey she should be fine. My aunt and uncle pile up all the poo, and their friend asked them why nothing was growing out of it? They don't feed the mules grain. Pasture and hat only (maybe other food but I'm not sure). She told my aunt she was sitting on a gold mine since it was pure. Luckily, I'm getting a couple pounds this weekend, but I plan to pack it around my grape and blue berry plants.

Maybe I'm the spring I'll borrow a truck and haul off your donkey poop! Hahaha

random remark

I want to get into canning, and my grandfather who did all the canning passed away. When it gets into spring and we have extra money, if anyone has any extra canning goods I would love to work out a barter or sale for what I need and what you don't. I know I need a sieve and pestle to make tomato juice, but everything else, I'm lost. Just something to keep in mind. Thanks in advance everyone! Semper Fi!

Not set in stone yet but may be downsizing a bit more. I have way too many laying hens! Probably a dozen RIR hens alone. My feed bill this week was $88 even after price matching and any discounts I could find. Ugh. 17 pigs, cost was $16 but yes 10 are babies. 8 calves, $20 (but Vacs are due tomorrow.) The rest of i was bird feed.
So I will likely have a few RIR, Easter Eggers and a pair of Turken available. And handful of other misc. breed hens also I have no roosters for, or do not plan to breed. All layers are under 2 years old or less. If you need to add a few, PM (private message) me, and I can give you more info and prices. Lastly my new piglets and awesome Momma, Willow! 2 are out of the picture, hard o get all 10 together lol! I use our large livestock trailer to farrow piglets and contain them safely.
