INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Yeah, we would have to determine what we wanted them for. The wife has never had rabbit meat so I need to have her try it first.

When people say it tastes like chicken, they're lying...... it's soooooo much better Hahahaha

I tan and preserve the hides, preserve the feet, the guts get composted, everything goes to use. We don't waste any part of the animal. They get a nice "last meal", and get thanked and calmed before they get the axe. It tears at my wife's heart strings a little, (mine too honestly) but it's food for the family.

Snapped a pic of Wilma the Blue Cochin banty and Fred the Splash Rosecomb.

Looks like we might have an Easter egger/buff brahma mix cockeral. He is not the dominant male so he is a little more skiddish. He is beautiful though so we aren't sure if we will keep him. When I get a chance I will snap a few pics.
Gorgeous!

This is as I understand the lime issue:

Quote:
I don't know that I'd recommend either but at least the Ag lime is purported to be safe around livestock. BE SURE ITS NOT HYDRATED LIME!!!!!
DH hauls it for farmers all the time. He made sure it was Ag lime, he knew the differences. I wanted to get more input after reading about the "burn" issue. I have been looking into it a lot more, and it sure helps cut the mud in the high traffic pasture areas! Not using it in buildings yet, want to research it more before I do. My cow neighbor has concrete in his barns. He swears by scraping out, then using lime, then fresh bedding over it for a good fresh cleanup.

Haven't had much to report with the chickens lately, but one of my does gave birth two weeks ago, and 5 of the 9 made it!

Two albinos, and four varied colorations. We had two completely black ones, but they didn't make it. Mom is a black/white New Zealand mix, and dads a New Zealand/we don't know mix lol.

If she prefers white meat over dark, she probably will enjoy it. I got spoiled by rabbit hunting when younger and like the wild rabbit a lot more. Its really a personal preference. I have raised domestic and it just wasn't the same for me, DH likes it a lot.

Update.

Found the baby dead in the yard this morning. Not sure how it got out of the coop. Not going to be able to let momma raise babies, which is unfortunate.

Am terribly sorry to hear.

I need some input. I'm struggling to find any good documentation on the recessive white gene to the extent of trying to determine what maybe occurring with my black bantam Cochin pair. The reason is the chicks down isn't just yellow as I would expect. It looks like it would be more of a silver or splash color down.

It's just one of those things I want to understand more. So if anyone has any experience with this or have maybe came across a good read on it please "educate" me!

This is my most recent hatch. The first 2 looked the same. They remind me of a lavender, silver blue or splash chick down. Not any white I've seen.

I know that once fully feathered they are solid white with no leakage.

Thanks in advance!!

What total cuties! I know we have a few folks like @pipdzipdnreadytogo that understands color genetics. There is also a genetic colors calculator but I wasn't able to find the link.
ETA found it!

We have a party tomorrow, so I must bring a Halloween-themed appetizer or dessert. We're having Cheddar ale soup & home made pretzels for dinner tonight, so I decided to see if I could make some spooky shapes. (When kids were in preschool I used this recipe to help them learn their ABCs.) Here's what I made:

Witches' fingers

Spiders

Of course these will all be eaten tonight, but I can make fresh ones for tomorrow.
Option #2:
I make yummy cinnamon buns from scratch. If I find some of those plastic spider rings, I could put one on each bun after they cool.

Does anyone have other fun ideas for Halloween snacks?
