INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

We had a crazy fun Halloween party on Sat. Before leaving, DD had to close up the coop for the night. I found it funny that none of the chickens were afraid of her. Especially dressed as a WOLF! Love the expression Oppsie's face!

DS was a penguin.

I went as a crazy chicken lady, of course. I used a puppet during the party, since it went well past chicken bedtime.

DH said he was the Grim Processor.

The Hosts were fellow chicken people. However, I had no idea how much they enjoyed Halloween.
Every area of the huge house, yard, pond, & forest was decorated. Even the chicken coop & run!

The guests enjoyed a live band, great food, bon fire, & hayrides through the "haunted" forest. (One guy even had a pretend chainsaw to liven things up)

On Sunday afternon, we carved our pumpkins.

Happy Halloween everyone! Sad to say all the children in our little neighborhood here are too old now, I realized it while sitting near the front door. We have few neighbors, and I know all the kids. The youngest just turned 15! Two of the kids did stop by on 4 wheelers to visit the critters and say hello. I have to admit I shared candy with them, and a few skittles for Sugar my goat doe! Warms my heart when the children stop in to say hi, and visit with our animals. I am so pleased they feel comfortable just stopping in and visiting.

We were fortunate to be able to re-purpose a float from a recent parade. It was a haunted house, 10x14 about, 10 ft high. When I heard the folks that built it, wanting to just trash it I asked to have it! Have to add siding and a roof, but its a solid shed style building! Has OSB and 2x4 wood frame, no floor. Will make an awesome shelter for my steers come winter and easily moved with our tractor. I prefer my shelters for all my animals portable. Easiest method of cleaning! We move the building/coop with our tractor (forks attachment) to a new spot. Switch over to the front loading bucket, scrape up poop and bedding. Dump on our compost pile and mix. New bedding goes in...And a clean base for them with fresh hay. Especially works well for my waterfowl.

Pretty awesome weather here, 78 tomorrow! taking advantage of the last of this warm weather as much as I can. Still getting plenty of eggs from my RIR and WL. Have started freezing eggs for winter. Our pekin flock is laying very well too. 3 drakes 7 ducks but not hatching until at least march. DH is loving the french toast, and awesome baked goods. I still have 2 Muscovy duck sitting on eggs, ugh!
Will reduce coops down to 2 for winter, rooster's coop and hen's coop. And a small coop for my OEG, they just are not co-mingling well. Standard size but still too small to be with the other birds. The trio is too timid and I know they won't thrive in a large group. Testing my pair of Dark Cornish tomorrow with the hen flock.

As egg production has gotten so lackluster, I've been doing a lot of looking outside for hidden nests. Hadn't found one until yesterday. They had six eggs in the middle of a clump of decorative grass. Little heathens.

I've decided that they think the nest boxes are too high in the coop. I put them about 20" off the ground to make the roll-out collection easier. I'm thinking I need to move it down to more like 12". I may forgo the rollout feature for a while too, and add some straw. Get them back to laying where they should, and then gradually reduce the straw. I would just lock them up, but the new birds need the ranging. They get picked on a little more than I would like in coop and run.

So, I have a weekend project now...goodie...

I knew I should have made the next boxes 100% modular instead of 70%...lol...

Hi guys.
I'm awful at keeping updated here.to catch up, we had a red headed baby boy July 8th! Isaac is almost 4 months old now.
I'm completely bummed on the chicken home front. I had to file a protective order against a local squatter where I live for harassment and stalking. It's been a year long issue.
Mysteriously, after filing for the order (it was granted for 2 years) all of my chickens were found dead in the run with their necks twisted. The squatter always brought up my chickens as a taunt. My 10 year old son is heart broken as they were his responsibility.
We will try again next Spring when chicks at our again locally.

I've loved catching up on what everyone else is doing! I'll make SURE I'm on regularly again!

Glad to hear from you again! Big congrats on your new addition!

What a horrible situation you're dealing with...I really hope you get some major relief from that and so sorry for your family's loss.
