Baby died as I was going to pick up my daughter today. Drowned in the water dish... in a half inch of water or less. What the heck.

Had the same thing happen to a newborn poult and a gosling. I am so sorry, thats a hard thing to find. I use these for at least a week, even for ducklings and goslings. I started using them after I first got quail, probably 3 years ago.

Our baby quail got a new cage yesterday. Much easier to clean!
DD still likes to spoiled them by adding "mushy food" as a treat. (Just feed soaked in water) They all come running up whenever a hand enters their cage.
So far, only one confirmed male. The little runt is still doing well. Only have 2 complains so far:
1. Quail eat & poop more than chickens.
2. When they 1st go back into cage, they "cry" to come back out. We must leave the room for a while to get them to stop.

Oh how they grow so fast!
On a sad note though of the 4 new Pied youngins I got a while back, (2) pair, (1) of those pairs didn't make it. I had after quarantine placed them outside with everyone else and noticed 2 acting off. It was after that week of lots of rain. Well I moved them all back into the garage but only a pair has survived it. They are doing well so I guess they will have to wait until after spring to return outside.
Oh how they grow so fast!

They are super social! I love how they will interact. I have had a few aggressive boys latch onto a finger too. I weed out the mean ones, just like chickens.

They do have a much higher metabolism and that's good, less possibility of salmonella. Also means more poop!

I am so sorry to hear on the pied. I love my BS fella, he has really stole my heart. Full of personality! He is still "don't touch me" but follows me everywhere. Really loves cat food and our nightly "bread-fest" for my geese, has now included him. I want to add a few hens in the spring, so he stays put with us. I am actually considering the swap meets to find him hens. I really enjoy the peas. So much like turkeys but wow the colors! They really bond to an individual person.
