INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

So this morning, I checked on the chicks and heard this distressed peeping noise. I eventually noticed that it was the lightest colored chick, who was standing up really tall and making this noise. It took me until the second time that that chick made that distressed noise to have a moment of realization--

Did that 4-day-old chick just crow?! :eek: :th

I'm not 100% sure that's what it was because he only did it twice and I wasn't paying full attention until the end of that second time, but I think that may have been what just happened! Guess the needle pendulum was wrong on that one! I don't even know how to process this! :lol:

We had an beautiful blue-green egg today from our 4 1/2 year-old EE, Roadrunner! She had a four month dry spell and has never been a good layer, but she lays the best eggs.

@Mother2Hens

My EE (Charlie) who will be 5 yo this March is the first to start laying. Started around Christmas and has laid about every other day! She's the only one laying...not a great layer in general either overall either. But she gets a break because she lays those colored eggs :D

I love your egg basket...where did you get that?

My bantam Cochins almost every boy has crowed anywhere from 2days old to two months old! It's Very pitiful sounding but I love that before they've even lost their down I know who's a boy!!!!

Hi I really need a new hampshire red rooster, I'm starting a flock in late March please reply
Agrarian in Indianapolis get's their chicks from Meyer Hatchery and you can request them to order certain birds for you. It also depends on how close you want it - Meyer is in Polk, OH which is about 4 hours from Anderson

Thought I'd drop in and say "hi!" you lovely bunch of enablers!

Now I'm longing for chicks/poults. I ended up not hatching any turkeys last year b/c they started molting right at the point mid summer that I could think about hatching. Of course now I have one determined broody - nesting in the a chicken nesting box. She moved daily to whichever box has the most chicken eggs. And I still don't have my Polish...

I love hatching my own - last year was my first time. Lots of Broodies to get the job done. Only problem? Too many boys. Seriously will probably just buy female's this year. The hardest are the bantam's. Pretty certain 3 of the 5 are boys. DD and I can't agree on who to keep and we already have too many boys I am too attached too and a neighbor who is not too happy about them.

I better go - not enough hours in the day to be on here at all!

Saw the neurologist this morning, and he believes I have a concussion (apparently a bad one with unusual symptoms) and that I may take 6 months to recover fully. He insisted I be out of school for no less than 4 weeks (after I talked him down from a minimum of eight weeks)... so I had to unenroll from all my classes this semester, which had all just started today. Was really looking forward to some of them. Trying to look on the bright side, but it's hard sometimes.

The three poults are doing very well. Will probably scrap everything currently in the incubator and clean it out. Will wait til spring to hatch anymore unless some of those eggs start waking up.

@Leahs Mom ~ Your Charlie looks like my Roadrunner except Charlie has a prettier comb. And I feel the same about their eggs–they're worth the wait!

I bought that mid-century chicken basket on eBay a couple of years ago for around $10, and the other night I happened to see another one! I just looked again and didn't see it. Occasionally when I want to wind down for the evening, I will go on eBay and do a general search: "Vintage Chicken." It's fun to look at the variety of things and of course, chickens are cute. LOL I make myself mostly "window shop" since I need to get rid of stuff, but sometimes I see something I really like, and if it's USEFUL...
Has anyone heard from @jchny2000 / Janet/ Our Fearless Leader ? Hope she is okay.
@Indyshent ~ Although you are suffering a set-back, you possibly feel some relief finding out from a neurologist what's been going on and what you need to do to recover. That's scary to have a head injury. I hope your chickens entertain and cheer you while you heal.

@Mother2Hens
She is a Crested Cream Legbar. They are said to lay blue eggs, but they're kind of green-blue to start and then lighten to blue later on. At least that's what happened with our last CCL.

She is not flighty nor dominant. Kind of like an EE - but less quirky. All of my EEs had unique personalities. (Einstein was very pretty but dumb, Tyrion is a squirrel chaser, another crowed instead of the egg song, etc.) The CCL will come up for treats & allow me to pet her without running for her life like a Leghorn. Neither of my Legbars have been cuddly lap chickens. There's a little mischievous curiosity & some problem solving ability, so they're also not as docile as my orps. Better egg efficiency since they're a light-med breed. Crest doesn't seem to limit vision. Some US Legbars don't even have the crests. Gotta love the blue-green eggs! However, if you only want the colored eggs, the EEs are much cheaper & easier to find. IMO
