We have a lot of new girls coming into lay. We only had 4 older hens that were the first layers but now we are getting 9 a day so some of joined in. We have 6 bantams (2 cochin, 1 silkie, 1 rosecomb and 2 OEGBs) that are the same age as the newest layers.
Where in IN are you?! I'm in southern IN and I'm looking for someone I can get a couple bantam pullets from! I'm new to chickens and currently have 1 silkie and I got 3 bantam Cochins but they turned out to be mutts I think one is a Roo bantam Cochin sebright mix and the other two are idk one and Roo and one pullet! But I live in a neighborhood with a small coop and I'm wanting something small that make good pets with the bonus of some eggs! I'm probably going to keep one roo but going to re home the other and I want two more pullets. I think my coop will only hold 5 bantams at the most. Any recommendations or breeds and where I can find them?!
I don't know where in you are in Southern IN, but the Bedford Rural King just got a large order of assorted bantams in today. I know they have one tank of Silkies. Also, most farm stores will do special orders for you when they place their orders.
Lovely flock! Adore your cochin mix! Here's my little flock...
?sebright Cochin mix Roo
? Cochin mix Roo
? Cochin mix pullet
Silkie hopefully pullet but idk yet
Adore your Cochin mix
I have a small crappy prefab coop from TSC or RK that was given to me before I knew anything about chickens and I live in a neighborhood so I only want to keep one Rooster but I'm having a hard time which one. My son is in love with the sebright mix one but the other one is a pair with the brown Cochin mix. What's your thoughts! So then I'll have space for two more pullets... I have a friend that breeds silkies but can't decide if I want to get two more of them or a different bantam and I don't really know where to go to find them. I've heard bad things about getting chicks from RK. Advice please and if you have any guess of the breeds in the mixes or the sex of the silkie please let me know![]()
I gave you comments under the individual pictures, but from what I'm seeing, the Sebright mix is likely your only roo. Silkies often wait a long time to show their true genders (generally look like girls until they start crowing) but yours looks like a girl to me. The crest is evenly poofy, and I'm not seeing "streamers" anywhere on it.Here's my little flock...

Both of the other Cochin mixes (likely with silkie or possibly bantam Brahmas) look like girls. Boys usually get shoulder patches, and your girls have pretty even coloring, so I wouldn't worry about either of them.
Even the Sebright could go either way, actually. Sebrights are also notoriously hard to sex because males do not get the normal male feathering in that breed. I'm not sure how many generations removed from the breed will result in normal feathering males (I suspect not many, but you never can know, I suppose). Prominent straight, stiff tail feathers are a sign of a pullet, but I can't see how well they curve or not from that angle. Girls of many breeds get (generally pretty) straight, stiff tail feathers before boys do (Cochins, Brahmas and Silkies are not on this list). This bird doesn't have many patterns on it and the spots appear pretty even, so it might surprise you by being a girl after all (I wouldn't put any money on it either way).
How old are they?
