INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

I am having the incubator set up, brother and his wife is doing the homeschooling thing and I purchased a incubator on closeout from a farm supply store a year and a half ago for "educational" reasons. (he said once he wanted chickens but wife said no, but i figured once hatched the kids may over ride mom). but I went to an auction over the weekend (Dinky's) and got some eggs (for eating never had a problem any time I purchased from there) nut I noticed something the auctioner never mentioned opposite side of seller's # tag it said Wyandotte cross fertile eggs. So now I am looking for materials for a brooder, also I am calling a few friends to help build my coop (at least 90% of parts there just needs to be assembled). for my run I purchased last march 31 12 dog run panels, 3 are 4x8 9 are 4x6 so I will set them on end and have my run be 8x 12 with the 4x8 as a "solid" lid to keep the prediters out. All my panels cost me approx. $75 on close out from rural king, I guess no one wanted a 4 foot high dog panel, but I guess no one could figure out when they went on sell that you could set them on end and have them 4 foot wide instead and spend as much for 12 panels as 1 would cost you roughly. all my lumber was from wood pallets from display fixtures shipped to a grocery store along with a christmas wreath shipper/display fixture, paint free from recycling center. so all I have had to buy so far is screws, paint brushes, hinges, 1 used window and 1 bundle of shingles (the last 2 from habitat for humanity restore for $10+ tax). So grand total for coop and run will be roughly $100 bucks.

Agreed! I prepare whole foods only for them. No canned or processed stuff. Both are heart patients, diabetic and moms on dialysis. It helped improve my health too! When I worked full time, I was close to 160 lbs.. now about 100. Being 5ft all, thats a big change! I no longer have to use blood pressure meds, and lost almost 60 lbs. Yes its more work, but absolutely worth the health benefits.

Rural Kings got em! They have chicks now in several stores.

Thanks, I just tried calling them. They won't have silkies in until late March at the earliest!

Anyone on the thread raise honeybees?

I'm looking to purchase a nuc this spring if possible. Best case scenario is a nuc, from bees that have wintered over here, treatment free.

My Dads been hospitalized, his COPD has worsened. Went to our family Dr on Monday, and was sent to ER. DH took him there since I had Mom at Dialysis. He's pretty sick, contracted a respiratory infection and it's escalated fast. On oxygen and they are keeping him a few days. There is discussion his COPD has advanced to where he will need an oxygen machine full time.
My farm is certainly telling me to expect an early spring. No matter what life events are happening I am out there a few minutes every day. Hired my neighbors son Arrick to help keep my animals tended until Dads home. Arrick visits my critters daily anyways, so I am very comfortable knowing they all like him already. I offered he take any eggs home he collects also! Very kind and caring young adult, my cows and goats adore him. He has a love for waterfowl, and his parents do keep chickens too.
I may not be on here much this week.
